Beginning today MotorpsychoNews will continuously look back at important cornerstones and events in the band's history. For this I'll focus on the 10, 15 and 20-year anniversaries of the respective events, meaning that in 2011 the years 1991, 1996 and 2001 will be first focused on. I figured it might be fun and appropriate to post the entries on this board as well. It is my hope that the snapshots from the past will inspire many of you to look back and share some motorpsychodelic memories. This could also serve as a valuable vehicle to gather important information about the band's history. If enough material is being assembled it might even ultimately justify creating a Motorpsycho chronology / timeline of some sort. You will have to bear with me as I am quite obviously not Mr. Know-It-All. I have to research this using the invaluable archive of the UnOff, the g35 archive, Dampsaba as well as searching the internet. Naturally I do depend on your knowledge and corrections and I would love if this series spawned a lively and rich discussion! Here is the first entry: -- 05.02.2011 Ten years ago on this day in 2001 "Barracuda" was released! The mini LP which was housed in a cover designed by Bent collected the rocking left-overs from the "Let them eat cake" sessions in 1999. Originally the album was intended to be released on the then legendary Man's Ruin-label fom America. After the album leaked to Napster and Man's Ruin didn't really work on the release the band did release it on Stickman. Eventually the album went to #8 of the Norwegian charts! Many fans regard "Barracuda" as one of the band's weaker efforts. It featured however the legendary tune "Dr. Hoffman's bicycle". "Vanishing point", "High time" and "Glow" are the only songs which are still being performed live. "Rattlesnake" on the other hand was never played in concert. It takes place for the first time. Motorpsycho are the headliners of the second festival day, show time 23:25. The band has played Astra before on 25.05.2010. This is a huge room (capacity 1.500) with a huge sound system so the band can be heard tonight blasting with a lot of power, which mainly has an effect on the bass. In trade for the extra-power-punch the sound is generally the not as detailed and good but still enjoyable. At first the hall is filled very well but during the "Unicorn" not so interested people leave and the crowd is not as dense towards the end of the concert. "TDDU" is a heavy affair tonight. A hard rocking version of "Through The Veils" already brings the house down early in the piece, "Into The Gyre" is pure sound overkill and the deep-doom depression version of "La Lethe" is another outstanding highlight tonight. Ok, first of all, let me just say that the ppl in charge of the sound system over at the Garage deserve a good "kick in the arse"!. The sound was terrible throughout the whole set (with hints of better times during the quiet parts, but it was not to be). At first i thought it was because of my location (right in front of the stage where it's always loud and abit grainy). But during Burn i tried the rest of the venue to see if it was better somewhere else, but it was still crap! So this obviously put a damper on the whole thing. And to further fuck up the gig, some fucking idiot decided to throw his leather jacket right onto Snah during Burn, causing the mike stand to fall, and Snah leave the stage before the song was even finished, leaving the rest of the band to come to a rather embarrasing stop. I'll update tomorrow, as i need to get some rest before my early flight home tomorrow. The article was printed on Friday December 2nd, and it featured Norwegian guitar luthiers. One of them builds classical guitars, but the interesting one for psychonauts is the mysterious Frank Stavem, who tells this and that about his luthier abilities. Bent Sæther is featured as one of his customers, and supplies insight into how he and Stavem works together. As luck would have it, I found an excerpt of the «Bent bit» on the journalist's own blog – although not excactly what was printed in the magazine, this seems to be a elongated version.
