"Of the few songs on the Wall Brick in the Wall part 2 is the only one that is halfway decent. The album is horrible. Deathy horrible."

I think the Wall is intended as a song cycle; that means all sings have their place in the context of the album and its story.

Having said that, do you really think 'Comfortably numb' doesn't stand up as a song on its own???

The thread that refused to die! ;-)

After a couple of weeks of reassessing and refamiliarising myself with the Floyd's music, I came to the conclusion that I like them after all and it wasn't all up to my youthful 'get some weed and chill out to Pink Floyd'-phase.

About them being a drug-band: this is not true, certainly not after mr. Barrett left. Mr. Waters always said that they were more fueled by alcohol than anything else. How were they able to 'play the sound of acid' then? I don't know. Maybe empathy with the times. Maybe that sound was meant to be theirs, regardless of any intake. The strangest tapes I get are from a friend of mine who is more or less a teetotaller. Go figure.

About DSOTM: I love that album. So sparse, so well played. I just watched the 'Classic Albums'-dvd and hearing mr. Gilmour play 'Breathe' and mr. Waters play 'Brain Damage' acoustically really changed my perspective on the songs. The use of space in the songs (Us and Them in particular) is something we musicians can learn something from. The fact that it was on the charts for 741 weeks (and counting) says something about the broad appeal of the record. I think it is an important achievement sonically: the first use of a sequencer (On the run) and the first time a band played to a tape loop (Time). This trend continued in WYWH.

About The Wall: Back in the day, that was my favourite Floyd album. I must have watched the movie at least 25 times, so much that once I saw the screaming face come out of a wall in a classroom I was in. That scared the shit out of me. It is not one of my faves anymore, must have played it too often. Also, some of mr. Waters' imagery is far too personal to decipher and therefore not really accessible. However, I was ten feet from the stage in Berlin when mr. Waters performed The Wall in 1990 and that will stay with me forever. When everything broke down before the second song (the only sound being a single synth) and mr. Waters was due for his grand entrance, he came on and did a little dance to tie us over. That was so funny and totally applicable to the 'performing monkey'-theme of the album.

I think the Floyd are an important band, highly influential even in places you would not expect. My faves now are WYWH (Shine on you crazy diamond...) and Animals (unexpectedly, just found that out, you're right Alex!).

Only Syd ever wrote on acid and he was gone halfway through the second album. I hope you are referring to 'Piper', otherwise get your facts straight. :-)

They should've called it a day after Wish you were here. In my opinion, The Wall is an extremely overrated album - they've got about three ideas on this album, each of which they repeat ad absurdum. How many ways can Roger Waters tell us that he misses his flyfly daddy? Jeez - go see a shrink.

The flimsy psychedelia they did was great. Piper, Meddle and Darkside were great. The overextended "jazzy" jams gives new meaning to the word boring, though - imo Motorpsycho are way way way better at this, and so are a lot of other bands - try Can, Crimson or Miles ca. 1970 (Live-Evil, the Fillmore concerts etc.). Miles especially will show you what a 15 minute jam should feel like.

Nope, I gave up the Floyd many years ago. There's just too much crap between the nuggets. A bit sad, really.

Laura

If you are not interrested in the band, then why bother?

I grew up with Pink Floyd, and that way they are a part of me. But I love the old albums, and it seems like you have only heard The Wall. Have you heard Meddle? I think Meddle is one of their greatest albums, then comes More, Atom Heart Mother, Piper At The Gates of Dawn & Animals. Check em out...

Laura, check out the dvd 'Live in Pompeii' by the Pink Floyd. Light up a j. and chill out... It's about the live experience I guess, just like MP strikes me more live than on stereo... though some 'ego-trippin' is involved with headphones on I say. winking smiley
