I completely agree. I HATE Pink Floyd. Although i'm young and may not understand some things in life yet, I am absolutely sure that Pink Floyd is the worst "over-popular" music ever.

Early Floyd is the shit.

That in-between period after Syd tuned in and dropped out, and before they got too structured again. 1970-73, pure gold.

You've probably heard Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall... You have to search for older material, both with and without Syd Barret. Check out Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother and the live part of Ummagumma and you'll hear that Motorpsycho have been inspired a lot by the Floyd (especially during the most spaced out live jams).

And talking about young... I was in 4th grade or something when I first started to listen to Floyd! Never stopped!

Absolutly!!! How could I forget that one?

Right, the years '66-'72 is a whole different story. I guess any psychonaut who states hating the Floyd has never really listened to any stuff of this freaky and loose period. More & Meddle are my fave albums.

Here's a starter for non-believers:

talk about intense.

and then:

And tons more. But also the bloated later stuff though. Happy diggin' for the good ones. The KQED show and Live in San Tropez movies for example are fantastick.

Pink Floyd sucks? Darkside of the Moon sold on in the top 200 albums for 14 years, and still continues to sell today. There are lots of people who still enjoy their music cause it's among the best ever made. If you don't like them...you are entitled to your opinion. Go listen to N' Sync or Britney Spears or something.

Britney keeps on selling too, so what? Dark Side of the Moon is boring. Floyd were great just until that album.

I personally think that Pink Floyd were amazing between 1975-1979.
Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall is one of prog-rock's
finest trilogies of albums.

I do however agree that Dark Side is overrated, even if some of the
songs on it are rightful classics.

I love their earlier stuff from the piper until Meddle, after that I think they've lost most of their magic. Live at Pompei is massive!

Dunno if floyd can be considered "prog", for they weren't noodling around on tasteless weeklong solos like others. I do respect their 75-79 stuff, too, of course, but I find them so much more fascintating and inspiring on meddle or more or obscured by clouds and that truly massive pompeii thing.

Early floyd is ok, but as a whole: crap

Sure the Floyd of the Barrett-era was pretty cool, nice and psychedelic and all but they really went into orbit with David Gilmour. He must be one of the best guitarists ever. Not the most impressive technique of course, but he compensates with beautiful melodies and absolutely marvellous fender strat sound. Just listen to the solo in Time (on DSOTM), gives me goosebumps all over.
And I think Animals is somewhat underrated, it oozes with dark, cruel underground tension and atmosphere.

Personally I think Gilmour's guitar-playing can get boring
from time to time. He has that patented sound and way of
playing, but he almost never "steps outside the box".

But I totally agree about Animals. My favorite Floyd album
ever. Dogs is really an awesome song; a dark song with
relatively aggressive lyrics (for Floyd, that is). 17 minutes
long, and not a fuckin' note wasted! grinning smiley

hmmm...considering pipers at the gates of dawn and the wall are a couple of my favorite albums i feel i need to reply: piper needs no defense - if one can't see how amazing that album is needs a psychiatric exam. but, i do understand why people don't like the wall - it can, at times, seem a bit overblown. however, its songs are based on very simple major and minor chords. therein lies its deceptive complexity. great rock is very simple. what a band does with that simplicity makes it interesting. motorpsycho often uses alternate tunnings that allow for easy play. yet they layer it all in thier unique way that makes 3 players sound like 6. that is by rooting the songs in very simple rhythms and chord progressions they crete a base to overly it all with all sorts of great sounds (see/hear early sonic youth) and wonderfully wild twists and turns (another great example is the song strawberry fields forever). pink floyd does the same thing. maybe youre confusing roger waters annoying ego with the music which (the music) fortunately stands on its own. but hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
cheers,
C.
