The future of Motorpsycho.. Some thoughts.
January 09, 2007 10:47PM
OK, I just thought about something regarding the future of Motorpsycho (After reading on MotorpsychoNews that MP has been recording in Trondheim in December). This is all speculation of course, but it seems to me that it would be likely that Bent and Hans Magnus would start recording more stuff as a duo (with help from various friends) and start releasing more stuff more regularly, and cut down on the touring.

This could lead to more MP-records, and maybe more experimental stuff, without the need to tour after every release.

What do you think? I like the idea (especially since I'm leaving Norway for a year and won't be able to make it to any eventual shows this year..), but it also seems like a natural progression somehow.

I really can't imagine that one of THE live bands on this planet would be happily confine themselves to studio work.
Even though I'd also profit from that, since I moved far far away from MP's live territory last year.

Well, they are getting older, and the toll of touring is probably teh main factor. My assumption of course smiling smiley

don't they earn the most money with touring? (like the most independant bands?)

Yeah, you've got a point there. If we are to belive the newspapers, they were forced to tour last year because of the economics..

It's kinda sad that people making so great music doesn't have the opportunity to do whatever they want and just be creative. But that's how the world turns these days.
I just hope they won't give Motorpsycho up. But, then again, what would they do then? Join Prepple in his garage?

IMO, they just could stop with studio releases and play only live smiling smiley if we have bootlegs, why should we care?

Well, I spotted Bent a couple of times in Trondheim in desember with his child, and he seemed quite busy and dedicated to his new job as a "bleieskiftarbeider", so maybe that's a good argument for less touring in the near future?

What's a "bleieskiftarbeider"?

But, MP is very very much a live band! I doubt they'll stop/give up touring, but perhaps they'll play shorter tours in the future. Yeah, Bent is obviously busy with being a father, but some tours here and there should work still! At least Snah managed to tour even back when his son was new born. i'm not sure but i think his son is about 10 years old? give or take a few years...

oh yes! that's kind of my dream! a motorpsycho gig twice a week here in Trondheim grinning smiley grinning smiley

But then again, they are very capable of making timeless, amazing, beautiful studio albums!

in my dreams they'll continue releasing über-albums every year, with 2 or 3 great tours in addition grinning smiley

the future of motorpsycho?
mmhhh
I'm not sure about it,
don't know if there should be a future,
thinking about bands like sonic youth, yo la tenge and so on
this bands are real bands with a lot of activitys over a lot of years,
or bands like dEUS they made a break but after this they are activ like in former times and they inform their fans very well about their futureplans.
but mp aren't very productive in the last years and they doesn't do anything to inform their fans (us), so now I'm a litle bit disapont about this.
I'm a fan since 1994 own all album and ep's, was on many concerts and still love they on the other hand, but I'm very tired about their contempt against their fans.
even it's turned me in a sentimental and sad moood, I sometimes think it would be better that they pronunce the end of mp.sad smiley

ok,
I can agree that they don't give much informations about their upcoming plans lately, but then again, could they give some informations at this point at all???

and if they would say that they plan to tour this year, but they don't know if it will happen because they have less time these days... what would it help you?!

I mean, since Geb left and Bent became father, I guess, they are not so sure about what will happen next to MP theirselves...

so why should they say something about plans to their fans if it is a matter of various factors and likely, these are not so easy to get a generel idea about them...

And me personally, I am very happy about the existence of MP, even in lower times for the band!
And it would make me very sad if they would split up!

@superstooka:

Like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo Motorpsycho is in fact a real band with a lot of activities over a lot of years. Let me remind you: Only the last year they released a double CD, did one quite long tour, one shorter tour and then some festival gigs as well. And roumurs say they are recording new stuff. That's not a little, and you can't seriously complain about that. The only thing they didn't, and don't do, is talking to the press. So what you really is complaining about is that MP don't do enough press.

MP has never been a band that have seeked fame and fortune as a part of the commercial music industry, but indeed been independent in everything they have ever done. They tried maybe in the Let Them Eat Cake-era to be more commercial, but honestly, they were never close to a major international breakthrough, were they? But why bother? They routinely enter the Norwegian charts for a couple of weeks anyway. (Because MP fans are so dedicated, everybody buys their records the first week, so they go straight to #1, stays there for two weeks and then disappears...) They sell enough records, they tour enough and do enough side-projects so that they can live of it (I guess). And they have the most dedicated fan-base a band can ever wish for. And they continue to release some amazing stuff and give mindblowing concerts. I am not sad over that.

Like any other band, MP is just a band, they have no obligations towards their fans, and their fans have absolutely no rights to interpret their way of being a band as contempt against their fans. On the other hand, you should be grateful that your favourite band is still very much alive and kicking well into their seventeenth year or whatever. Right now I have the Øya-festival gig running in the background, and I see Bent and Snah's smiling faces and Bent's jumping and dancing, their obviously having a great time. Hating their fans? Can't see any sign of that. So it's more some fans having contempt against the band I think, wishing them to be something they aren't.

(Sorry, this turned out way too long, but you know, be happy etcetera etcetera)

Completely agree with Mr. Welsh. MP-fans are generally a bit spoiled when
it comes to MP because they've previously had such a high release rate.
So now when they have a bit more low-key profile, people complain.

This might have something to do with Geb leaving. Up to autumn 2002, they
had a "one album, two tours a year" going mostly. With Geb gone, that routine
seems a bit harder to do.

And when you see them enjoying themselves and challenging eachother on stage,
that's when you know they're having a good time. They've stated several times
that they will call it a day when the spark and the magic is gone.

The spark is definitely not gone. And the musical output is still of a very high
quality. Example: The users at the message board of one of Norway's biggest news-papers had an unofficial "Best album of 2006" going. BH/BC was #1. Go figure?

Actually, I would say they had that one album per year up to Gebs departure in Spring 2005 - we had the Fishtank in 2003 (which could classify as album due to its length) and the second Tussler record in 04, and I think I heard some rumours that they planned to record some stuff in 05 too... obviously this was delayed due Gebs departure and now we saw BHBC in 2006.. only one year "lost" really.

I think MP still has the power/energy and so forth to do more of that, album and a bit touring each year. Why not? They seem to have enough creativity, no?
I almost would bet we will see another album this year and also a tour. I got my fingers crossed. smiling smiley

As for fand info: I've got no prob with their information policy, thats their thing. They have no obligations towards us. And media coverage too. That is perhaps the most annoying thing about being a musician - having to talk to music press. I can understand they dont wanna do it anymore and they've got the fanbase dedicated enough so they can go without.

I have no problem with them recording more stuff, but I can't do without my MP gigs. I need my shot to get me through the year.

I shouldn't worry too much.

Since their main source of income I guess is touring and playing (like every normal indie band) I really don't think they'll stop playing live-shows.

3-4 years ago? I know Snah became a parent in ´97 or something.
