MP and singing

If MP has done rehearsal every day the last 18 years, why not spend a month or two learning to sing?

I'm so tired of this shit.. OK, they aren't vocalists first and foremost. They are musicians.

This is the perfect example of a "story" that's been told over and over again until people just take it for granted: "Motorpsycho is a great band, but the guys should learn to sing." Ha-motherfuckin'-ha.

OK, I've cringed a few times during their shows, but 98% of the time Bent and Snah's voice gives me the same feeling as everything else about their playing: They use what they have, and create magic.

It's as stupid as saying "Snah doesn't play perfectly piched notes on his guitar all the time, teach him to play". Ever thought about the fact that the fucking pitch isn't the most important thing when you're inside a 30 min. jam?

Have you heard Taifun? Plan #1? Greener? etc. etc.

They CAN sing. And they do. What do you want it to sound like? Overproduced shit like Backstreet Boys or My Chemical Romance? To quote the previous poster, you guys really don't seem to have a clue..

Totally agree with Aubrey here. There's no doubt that, for instance, Enrique Iglesias knows how to sing. His music sucks anyway...

yep, because of autopitching and other studiotricks, some poor souls really believe these guys can sing and guys like Bent and Snah can't.

but still, especially Snah does sing on the new album as if he's practising every day.

and lastly, perfect pitch doesn't equal perfect singing. but hey, some people call yngwie malmsteen a talented and creative musician.

i love bent's vocals a lot.
he is able to express the lyrics very very good, I think
and snah learned in the last years a lot imo, but he is still not one of my favourite singers.

well, it depends on what you expect good music to be. if you're into technically challenging playing, then you should beetr stick with malmsteen, i suppose.

Snah and Bent are definitely not the most skilled singers. But on the records, i always love their singing, especially on the last bunch of em. On Demon Box their singing is quite raw and sometimes over the top, but that's what i love about it. A matter of taste perhaps.

Live they do have more moments that their singing isn't that great. Take Close Yr Eyes for excample, during the 2002 Paradiso gig. Quite awful. But on the other hand, the take risks when playing live, big risks. And they sometimes scew up. Well that's what happends when you take risks, and MP taking risks is on of the reasons why i love em this much.

And on the new record, one of the fisrst things i thought of when listening to it for the first time, was about the singing/vocals. I thought wow, the vocals sound so good! I love it.

I´m not the type of guy who thinks the vocals must always be perfectly in tune. It´s more important to get the feeling with the singing.
But even though I agree also that sometimes they should be a little more concerned about their voice. Especially during the 2006 tour I thought "man, these parts just have to be practised a little more and they are cool!" Like the Refrain of No Evil. Every show I saw them playing this song, the refrain always was completely out of tune and sung without energy because of that. Just rehearse and nail it down in the practice room and it´s cool! It´s not that hard!
For the records they did it mostly pretty fine. Especially during their "pop-phase" these songs have very good vocals. And they sure did use autotune a little sometimes... winking smiley

Sure, if good means fast. But nothing bores/annoys me more than lightning quick guitar playing. I don't see the musical quality there. Anyone can learn that.

I personally think that on their records the singing is OK, as it comes to live shows, I think Bent is more sure about the pitch of his voice so he sings louder... So his voice will cut more easily through the monitormix on stage. In snah's case I can imagine that he feels more insecure bout his singing, or should I say felt more insecure then Bent. On the last record his vocal qualities improved, don't you think? In fact it has been going on for a few years now. Also on BH/BC his singing was getting quite better. Maybe he's rehearsing, or just doing it... But during a concert it's necessary for singers to hear themselves on top of the music in a monitormix. And with all these amps on stage and a warm full and heavy sound in the venue they're playing, it's not always easy to get the vocals on top in the mix on stage. Especially when the singer is nervous or a bit insecure about his voice. I'm not totally sure 'bout that, I' m only guessing because I see how you guys have all different meanings.
I'm pretty sure Enrique Iglesias will use In Ear Monitoring, with his voice on top and a nice reverb so for him on stage it sounds almost like on a record. I never saw this dude doing a live performance, so I'm not even sure if he sings well live, but hey, it's just an idea!
Could be right though, I'm a pro sound engineer with nearly 12 years of experience.
Let's give it a thought and stop fighting each other on the net. We're all in this because of their music...

Cheers

winking smiley I like Bents and Sanh singing a lot more!

I have to agree with the phrase; Practice makes perfect in this case. Been listening to alot of live shows throughout the years, and it strikes me time and time again how different their vocals can be from one show to the next. Take snah for instance; When singing for instance Superstooge he always does a super job, but on other songs, like a hoof to the head and the new serpentine, he sounds horrible. So again...it's not that they can't sing. They can both create magical vocal preformances with old and well rehearsed material. I just think they need some more time to perfectionalize the newer material (BH/BC and LLM). They'll come around
