Bruce Springsteen "Candy's Room" -> Motorpsycho "Hey Jane"
May 20, 2008 03:40PM
"[...] Den Beginn von "Candy’s Room" klauten Motorpsycho unbemerkt für ihr "Hey Jane", und bei "Racing In The Street" gehen Träume in die Brüche: "Some guys they just give up living and start dying / Little by little / Piece by piece / Some guys come home from work and wash up / And go racin’ in the street.""

Jan Wigger over at Germany's biggest news site Spiegel Online states in a Springsteen album review that parts of Motorpsycho's "Hey Jane" were nicked from the intro of Bruce Springsteen's "Candy’s Room". Interesting and somehow surprising observation, isn't it? But I currently have no possibility to confirm it. Anybody?

Well, I couldn't recognize much Hey Jane there
except for a drum pattern that for sure has been
used in thousands of songs. ;-)

pay attention to the bass...

More than unconsciously influenced I'd say. But there's tons of stuff to be found in MP's back catalogue anyway, not surprisingly since they ooze everything probably 24/7. And that's a good thing. I've always seen Motorpsycho as the melting pot of 40 years of great music.

Here's another possible Hey Jane influence, a great song by The Electric Prunes:

maybe a more likely mp influence?
you could probably find a lot of examples like that though...

Sorry guys, I'm still not convinced. ;-P

That rhythm group interplay of quints playing bass
and snare work has been used by garage and psychedelic
bands many many times in the 60s already (e.g. in the
Electic Prunes tune Ram hinted at.) It's not really
a special Springsteen invention.

Still can't hear any direct link to the Springsteen tune
(as in harmony and/or melody).

I do. Though there are tons of songs using that type of drumming intro and probably even more which use that kind of bass groove, you don't see those two combined that often (atleast i haven't). But on the other hand; even though bent (and MP) might have borrowed the intro idea from Springsteen, it's still just a few seconds of sound. A part from that, the two tracks are far from similar. So it's no biggie imo
