I have to disagree strongly. I could never find much in Led Zep, so I prefer MP by a long shot.

Same here. To be perfectly honest (although I know quite a few some disagree with me) I personally hate Plant's squeaking and Jimmy "I-cream-in-as-many-notes-as-humanly-possible" Page's solos. The fact that I don't like the least is that they've stolen so incredible many blues tunes from black musicians without giving any credit at all, pretending they've written them themselves. As jtr, I'd much rather listen to MP. Anyways, I can see that the post I made in this thread for more than a year ago is quite outdated. What I listen to at the moment is amongst others:

Lasse Marhaug, Electric Wizard, Boris, Leonard Cohen, Supersilent, Nico, Joanna Newsom, Merzbow, Keiji Haino, Cat Power and the last couple of days I've been listening through a good deal of Grateful Dead-albums although I haven't really enjoyed them before now!

ik think zep is great and really enjoy listening to them. but they're not as adventurous as mp live. even though the do loooong jams, they tend to be more structured than mp's, i find.

anyway, for those of you who are not on it already, the reunion show is now available through the usual channels.

Nah, I too have to rate MP over Led Zeppelin. But that's more because of the
fact that I have followed them for a long time and was along for the ride.

LZ however is a very good. Top 5 in my book. I'll probably only rate MP and
King Crimson anno 1969-74 over them.

Oh yeah, king crimson at that point had a very special way to "jam" and the longer songs have very cool structures but...
I don't like the singing most of the time, especially on songs like "easy money" like "u i u i aaa di du di da" or something like that
But I like the singing on FORMENTERA LADY on the record ISLANDS, that must be another singer than the usual one?!

I love Motorpsycho and think they're by far the bestest band nowadays, in style, playing, composing and everything. But how can anyone in his right mind rate the mighty Zep below them? Starters might want to check their 3rd album or "Physical Graffitti" and their live stuff "How the West was won" and the double-DVD from 2003.
In terms of variety and breaking new ground and always keeping the spirit right, they are unmatched. In that spirit, MP actually are quite similar, but Zep was there first (and to me, the more I grow with them, they're even the greater adventure to listen to).

And about that "stealing from the poor black guys":

It was the blues, it was the sixties, it was the birth of it all, there wasn't any common courtesy about this yet. Everyone played blues standards and added something here and there. The one with the pure soul who throws the stone back to this would have done just the same thing back then.
They did about 3 or 4 Willie Dixon rip-offs in their very early years. The band has long credited him since then. On their very first album, actually. And on Knebworth '79, in front of 100'000 people, Plant said, yes they DID steal stuff from the blues.
Memphis Minnie got her credit, too. Way back in '71 for When the Levee Breaks.
The only one I know of that is still credited to the band is The Lemon Song from their 2nd album. Probably because there are just some parts of the lyrics "stolen".

As I said, those "incredibly many blues tunes" come down to about 4...

Yeah, I've heard those two records (Zooma and The Thunderthief)
They're pretty cool, actually. I prefer Thunderthief because it
has stronger individual songs like Leafy Meadows (with Fripp),
Hoedown, Ice Fishing At Night and Angry Angry (hilarious lyrics!)

oh btw, that's John Wetton (later to form Asia, "Heeeeeeaaaaat of the Moment", shudder) singing Easy Money ladidudida. He sings on their 3 more heavy 70ties albums "Larks' Tongues in Aspic", "Starless & Bible Black" and "Red".
The guy on "Islands" was a different one. They changed singers (who always also were the bass players) on every record before they kinda settled with Wetton.

Boz Burrell (later Bad Company) on Islands, and John Wetton on Aspic, SABB and

I never claimed to be of any kind of right mind, of course, but I certainly rate MP above Led Zep. They might be among the shoulders MP stand on, but MP sees further.

There were times during the nineties when I definitely loved and listened to MP way more than Zeppelin, mainly because they were the fresher experience. But since they started to travel back in time themselves - starting with Trust Us which is as Zeppelinesque an album as can be - they sure lead (...) me back to them, too.

Your standing on the shoulder image is very poignant, though.

But did all you people gather in due awe and watched the clips I linked above? I think they're incredible and leaving aside the reunion thing or whoever or when or why this is all in the first place, it just rocks hell and cleans the floor. I mean, even this bazillionth version Whole Lotta Love leaves me speachless.

I downloaded the bootleg, and yes it was way better than I expected it
to be. If they would be doing a tour, it would probably break all kinds
of records (would be well deserved, too)

But I stand by my opinion:

TOP 5 BANDS
1. Motorpsycho
2. King Crimson anno 1969-1974
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Pink Floyd
5. Sonic Youth

I didn't doubt for a second. Plant's and Jones' latest solo works shows them in best shape. And the drummer is only 41 and with this bass player, you get the most solid rhythm section you can ask for. And Jimmy, he was probably the most motivated of them all and would do nothing less than his best. The only thing that surprised me, was how easily it matched their shows from the glory days.

But same with King Crimson, those grampas are as heavy and mindblowing as ever.
