What are your favorite actual bands these days beside MP?

@supernaut: It's actually very easy why I dont bow down to "the mighty Led Zep" - I just dont like 'em. Not my cup of tea. Never been my thing. Hmmm and what you said about Trust Us, it being "Zeppelinesque" -- Maybe that's why I was never too fond of that paticular album and I never quite understood why everybody is ranking it so high.
It's just a matter of taste, thats all.

Regarding that! Although I had already drunk a couple of beers that evening, I'm quite sure that Jørgen Munkeby, the guitarist/saxophonist/vocalist of Shining, was in the crowd at the Bergengig. I wasn't 100% sure, but never got around to ask him. Now that I see Motorpsycho went to his concert, I'm positive that it was him

For me though, it is kinda the opposite of your opinions regarding the band. I really liked them when I saw them live, but on record they didn't come of as heavy or anything and it lost its effect soon after seeing them live.

I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source of information all the time, but at this matter it is. I can count 8 direct stolen songs/riffs/lyrics (not counting the references to Stairway to Heaven and YMB at the end of the article which I find okay. On top of that you have When The Levee Breaks which is one of their most famous tunes, but Memphis Minnie did get her credit, although most fans think this is just another example of Plant/Page's great songwriting). Stating that they DID steal from Willie Dixon 11 years later after being filed several law suits against, is the least they should've done. When I listen to music I'd rather have something unique and not just some white boys showing how great they are at plagiarism, and I'm no big fan of Page's 25 minute solos and Bonhams looooong drum solos with no direction either. I'd much rather listen to The Stooges and hear how great Iggy Pop is to 'stick it deep inside'. (Their record from this year though was a disaster)

The plagiarism thing obviously weights more or less if one doesn't or does like a band. Or even for the liking of a band. I may not have an original pressing of their first '68 album, but it is an old and worn one, and I'm quite sure it's from the early 70ties and Willie Dixon already got his full solo credit there for 2 songs. Some of the statements in that wiki article are quite ridiculous (that stop'n'go thing on black dog? come on...), some probably are true. But then it puzzles me, why sometimes they did give credit, sometimes not, and some songs are credited as arranged traditionals. So we can't determine their priorities, but I really don't think there was anything greedy or "evil" in that. They always expressed their love for and their roots in american black music, this by naming the original artists. I know, those can't buy things from that, but I think it still comes down to a common courtesy thing, that wasn't clearly settled back then. Especially not in the minds of a bunch of twenty year old rockers. Zeppelin worked mostly as an improvisational jam band, and what did you jam on in the 60ties and early 70ties? Your beloved blues structures and "hey hey yeah woman give me love" lyrics! So you want to give credit to everyone who did the same thing by jamming over these elements before? It was thought of as being inspired and paying tribute, as keeping a legacy going. Don't forget, these were other times. Later they didn't just give in to ANY lawsuit put forward to them just because they became the bloated rich guys. That's why it may have taken some time. And I totally understand that.
If one googles for Zeppelin plagiarism, not only will you find tons of articles which border on manic behaviour and neurotic nitpicking disorders, they almost all concentrate on their first few records and totally ignore 90% of their (and latter) work. And the fact that the guys worked with hundreds of "ethnic" artists since, obviously doesn't count anything, since it would contradict their cherished bad reputation among the saints.
So well, if you really think Zeppelin was nothing more than some white boys showing off on plagiarism, then I can't discuss this any further.

Generally speaking:
What is it with this white/black dude thing anyway? As I asked before, is it only a crime to steal from black guys? We all love Motorpsycho, but they "steal" tons of stuff. No one seems to bother (nor do I), but is this because they're stealing from white guys...? This is weird. Sorry for rambling, but I react like this instinctively to any form of hypocrisy.

Other than Motorpsycho and IY I'm pretty much on a strict Black Metal-diet right now

Until last week, I almost never listened to rockbands, which are singing in german, because most of them, seemed kind of boring, both musically and sometimes even the lyrics...
But since last week, I got hooked on 2 german bands...
...Ton Steine Scherben's first and second album (!!!) the feeling of some songs is just undescribable, because it feels like there could be a revolution right now, but then again, you realize, that nowadays, the young folks and students are quite not as they seemed to be in the 70s, for instance, last year, many committed people tried to organize the "Studiengebühren-Boykott" and I talked to many many people, trying to persuade them of the necessity of participating in that boykott, but many of them replyed: "Oh, I don't want to be exmatriculated by the university, bla bla and I don't think that it makes any sense, bla bla and there won't be many people, so I don't need to participate, bla bla, ... ok, but back to topic, the next band I recently falled in love with is...

...Tocotronic: I always thought "They are boring", but the lyrics of the latest album Kapitulation are very poetic and you can happily sing along. I think with every album they make, they get better and better, let's see what they will do next

@Tocotronic: Agree to that. I liked the first album and found the next three pretty bad, but starting with KOOK from 1999 or 2000 they got better with every album. Kapitulation is their best one so far and I'm looking forward for more in that vein.

@ Paulus : yeah that first Captain Beyond album is really ace man.
