Went to see the Adrian Belew Power Trio last friday. The old man with two siblings aged 21 and 22 on drums and bass. Great stuff. Freakish. Weird. Good spirits. Virtuosity can be fun.

Visited a Mogwai concert last week. Good show, though a bit static/close to the album when you compare it to MP.
Still, very nice and intense experience.

But that's not what I wanted to say. The support act was The Twilight Sad. Scottish indie rock. They did only 5 songs but I liked it a lot. If you like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, check this one out, they're somewhere inbetween I would say. With a singer that actually adds something (in a heavy scottish accent). Listen to "And She Would Darken the Memory"" and you'll see what I mean (or not smoking smiley ) I'll definitely check out their album(s).

Just dove into Soft Machinê's 3rd album. Some fiddling here and there, but at least track #4 is wonderful.

Ah and also Siouxsie's back on the menu. And Rush. They may be considered uncool, but live they're good fun, goofy guitarist. Old men having the time of their lives. Nice to watch. Funny movies on their DVDs.

I'm listening to a lot of Caravan these days, their 1970-1973 stuff. Check out "In the land of grey and pink", "For girls who grow plump in the night" and "If I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you", great stuff. Gotta love the album titles. Canterbury prog/jazz fusion with a lot of cool organ and some incredible jams.

Also Colosseum II. Try "War dance" and "Strange new flesh". They've got some awesome tunes. Late 1970s progressive rock. Guitar, guitar, guitar. And some synth for good measure. Got some heavy grooves going on, lovin' it. While I'm not really a big fan of Gary Moore, he does play some cool guitar here. Last call before the 80s killed guitar based music.

I've been checking out Magma as well. I heard this stuff some years back but didn't really dig it. I guess I'm more open to it now. This is pretty strange prog. Prog meets meditation and talking in tongues or something. It's like what Battles would sound like in the 70s, if they exchanged their synths with vocal parts and a male choir. So far I'm getting into "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh". How can you not love a band that chants you into a trance in a make believe language? That's right, you can't.

As I am having my Black Metal days (still, somehow - it really fits the Winter), I currently enjoy ColdWorld, a German BM solo project, who combines BM very very great with ambient music. His latest record, "Melancholie²" is a recommendation. There are superb soundscapes on there.

Also very nice are Wyrd from Finland. They mostly write very melodic stuff, but tend to get monotonous over long distances, which is a feat I like in their music. Here I can recommend the second album "Hudrafolk".

Generally, from that genre (in the widest sense, call it what you want, I'm not so much for classifications) I love Falkenbach, Dornenreich, Vinterland, Nazgul (the Italian band), Shining (the Swedish band - their wicked mix of jazzy doom and brutal BM on "Halmstad" is very great), Jotunspor, Wolfswinter and the more obvious ones as Gorgoroth & Satyricon, too.
