Bedroom eyes, de verrassende opener van Phanerothyme, de nieuwe Motorpsycho. Dit Noorse trio is op 10 jaar tijd uitgegroeid tot een vaste waarde. Muzikaal hebben de heren een hele weg afgelegd. Want in het begin hielden ze zich vooral onledig met luidruchtige rock vol noise-, hardcore- en zelfs metalinvloeden. De vorig jaar verschenen cd Let them eat cake betekende een koerswijziging. Voor die plaat liet Motorpyscho zich inspireren door muziek van de jaren '60 en vroege jaren '70. De klemtoon ligt tegenwoordig sterker op de liedjes. Dat zegt Bent Sæther, de belangrijkste zanger en songschrijver van de groep en oorspronkelijk ook de bassist. Dat is hij live nog altijd, maar bij de opname van een plaat bespeelt ieder van de leden verschillende instrumenten.

BENT SÆTHER: It is more focused on composition these days then it used to be: how to make the four minute popsong interesting, you know, a quest. And basically trying to challenge ourselves, both as writers and as instrumentalists and as singers in a big part too, in a different way. And learning along those lines. So it is basically what we started on Let Them Eat Cake we sort of took a little step forward, we think at least.

Op het nieuwe album Phanerothyme zijn invloeden van Let them eat cake hoorbaar. Toch is er een verschil tussen beide cd's, vertelt Bent Sæther. Volgens hem heeft Motorpsycho nu pas écht de oude gewaden afgegooid.

BENT SÆTHER: At the time when Cake was finished, it felt as like it was a totally new Motorpsycho. But I can see now that we still had some of that old stuff in there, some of the old ideas and some of the old ways of relating to music. That started to change on Let Them Eat Cake and this is sort of the fulfillment of the other way of looking at stuff or the somewhat new way for us at least.

Motorpsycho heeft altijd een zwak gehad voor lange, epische nummers. Dat is nu wat verminderd, al kunnen de heren het af en toe toch niet laten. Go to California bijvoorbeeld, dat we twee weken geleden hebben gedraaid. En ook de song For free heeft een episch kantje.

BENT SÆTHER: It is, I guess, in our blood so much that we can not really get away from it. But I don't think of the songs as big epic things, I think of them as popsongs, but maybe with a little longer guitarsolo or something like that (lacht).

For free uit Phanerothyme, de nieuwe cd van Motorpsycho. De titel is een woord dat door de schrijver Aldous Huxley is bedacht en het betekent zoveel als psychedelica, zegt Bent Sæther.

BENT SÆTHER: So, it means psychedelics, it's another word for that. But it's a very beautiful word, I think. It looks like it is some kind of medicin. Maybe it's medicin for the soul. Anyway, that's what we thought of at least. So, if you wanna leave this trivial world behind, you can take half a gram of phanerothyme and then you'll feel a little better. You can open your eyes and you can open your ears and you can open your mind, hopefully.

Motorpsycho heeft geen psychedelische hulpmiddelen gebruikt tijdens de opname van Phanerothyme. Hard werken en je goed concentreren is de boodschap. Met goed én gevarieerd resultaat overigens. Want Motorpyscho is muzikaal van vele markten thuis. Volgens Sæther heeft dat te maken met de rusteloosheid die hen alledrie kenmerkt.

BENT SÆTHER: We are a very restless bunch of people. Once we feel like we've mastered something, it is not interesting anymore. So, probably next time we go back and start writing songs and work on stuff, we will change a little bit again. It has always been like that, none of the Motorpsycho-albums are the same. They all have some sort of new or, different direction behind them.

Inderdaad, geen enkele plaat van Motorpyscho is een doorslagje van een andere, al hoor je soms natuurlijk wel de genetische verwantschap. Het is overigens geen bewuste politiek om telkens een beetje van koers te veranderen: er bestaat niet zoiets als het grote Motorpsycho-vijfjarenplan. Het idee alleen al doet de leden gruwen.

BENT SÆTHER: It's not really a conscious thing, but it's basically what we find interesting. We don't have a big five year plan and in two years we're gonna play reggaemusic or anything like that, it's just a natural development of us as human beings and also as composers, I would say. We don't decide when we write songs what kind of songs they should be. We try to do justice to the ideas or to fulfill the visions that you have when you sit down with a little guitar and think up something.

The slow phaseout van Motorpyscho, het trio uit de Noorse stad Trondheim. De groep lijkt op stilistisch vlak soms wel een salamander, zo makkelijk schakelt ze van het ene genre over op het andere. Maar eigenlijk vindt Bent Sæther dat een onbelangrijke discussie. Een muzikale stijl vergelijkt hij met een taal. Met elke taal kan je zeggen wat je wil.

BENT SÆTHER: We don't really think of the styles as important, you know. Different musical styles are valid for saying different things in music. It's basically languages that you can adapt and use for whatever you need to communicate, you know. So we are totally open we can do whatever we want and still call it Motorpsycho stylistically. Not a lot of people have given themselves that sort of freedom, I think.

Die eigenzinnigheid en muzikale koppigheid is het wezenskenmerk van Motorpyscho. Als een van de drie een liedje schrijft dat bij de andere twee tot enthousiasme leidt, dan is het een nummer voor Motorpyscho. En hoe het klinkt is dan totaal onbelangrijk.

BENT SÆTHER: We have decided that whatever we write will be a Motorpsycho-song if we feel it's good enough and then it can be everything from a hardcore heavy metal thing to a sweet little ballad or a countrysong or whatever. We have to try to make the songs to reflect who we are and what we feel like at the moment that we are recording whatever it is, you know.

Een nieuwe invloed die op Phanerothyme te horen valt, is de Motown-soul. Da merk je zodadelijk in de song B.S. Die twee letters zijn de initialen van onze gesprekspartner Bent Sæther. Toch gaat dat nummer niet alleen over hem maar ook over hij hij doet alsof hij Barbara Streisand is. Omdat zelfs een undergroundmuzikant als Sæther er zich soms pijnlijk van bewust is hoe hij door anderen wordt gezien. En dan komt de Barbara Streisand in hem naar boven. Om nog maar te zwijgen van een andere b.s., de bullshit met name.

BENT SÆTHER: It's about me pretending to be Barbara Streisand. And also bullshit. And also trying, it's very hard, you're not really thinking about your status in the world all the time. But sometimes you see yourself or you see things written about you that make you perceive yourself as other people do. And you realise that there is not necessarily a big step from being Barbara Streisand. It's about the same thing, you know, how to present what you're doing and how you're being perceived. And all the bullshit that goes into that. So, it's me, it's Barbara and it's the realisation that this business sometimes is basically bullshit.
