Motorpsycho searches for a higher consciousness

HAARLEM – De Noorse band Motorpsycho heeft zijn 20-jarig jubileum bereikt en is na veertien albums beter op stoom dan ooit. NU.nl sprak met zanger/bassist Bent Sæther.

HAARLEM – The Norwegian band Motorpsycho has reached its’ 20th anniversary and is – after 14 albums – firing on more pistons than ever. NU.nl spoke to singer/bassist Bent Sæther.

De band heeft in die twintig jaar nergens spijt van. “Natuurlijk zijn er nummers waar ik achteraf niet al te trots op ben, maar zonder die liedjes had ik andere nummers niet kunnen schrijven. Het is allemaal onderdeel van het proces, het zijn allemaal tegels op ons pad naar verlichting.”

After those 20 years, the band has no regrets. “Of course there are songs that in retrospect I’m not too proud of, but without those songs I couldn’t have written others songs. It’s all part of the process, they are all stepping stones on our path to enlightenment.”

“Wij proberen geen verhalen te vertellen met onze nummers. Onze muziek is het medium, er is verder geen boodschap. Het draait allemaal om spiritualiteit: jezelf kwijtraken in het bewustzijn.”

“We are not trying to tell stories with our songs. Our music is the medium, there is no further message. It’s all about spirituality: losing yourself in the consciousness.”

Coma

Drie uur durende liveshows zijn voor de drie mannen van Motorpsycho eerder regel dan uitzondering. “Je moet jezelf in een soort coma zien te spelen”, legt Sæther uit. “Dat duurt even, haha. Dan is je brein uitgeschakeld en neemt de muziek het over.”

Live shows lasting three hours are more the rule than the exception for the three guys of Motorpsycho. “You have to play yourself into a kind of coma,” Sæther explains. “That takes a while, haha. Then your brain is disconnected and the music takes over.”

“Onze liveshows hebben altijd hetzelfde doel: transcendentie. De zoektocht naar een hoger bewustzijn. Het vergeten van tijd en plaats: alles en iedereen.”

“Our live shows always have the same common goal: transcendence. The quest for a higher consciousness. Forgetting time and place: everything and everybody.”

Koek

Cake

Motorpsycho was altijd een heel productieve band, maar ergens halverwege 2002 was de koek op. “We waren helemaal leeg, er was niks over.” Het drietal begon ‘voor de gein’ een countryband, The International Tussler Society, die geheel onverwacht behoorlijk succesvol werd.

Motorpsycho has always been a very productive band, but somewhere halfway the year 2002 they found themselves running dry. “We were completely empty, there was nothing left.” The threesome started a countryband ‘for laughs’, The International Tussler Society, which found some unexpected success.

“Dat was natuurlijk helemaal niet de bedoeling, toen hadden we er geen zin meer in. Wat als grap was begonnen werd allemaal veel te serieus.” Dat leidde in 2005 tot een breuk met drummer Håkon Gebhardt.

“Of course that wasn’t meant to happen at all, our hearts weren’t in it anymore then. Something that started as a joke all of a sudden became way too serious.” That lead to a parting of ways in 2005 with drummer HÃ¥kon Gebhardt.

“Hij voelde zich thuis in banjoland en wilde graag blijven, maar de harten van mijzelf en Snah (zanger/gitarist, red.) lagen in de rockwereld. Voor mijn gevoel is Motorpsycho pas op dit album zijn vertrek te boven.”

“He felt at home in banjoland and really wanted to stay, but the hearts of myself and Snah were in the rockworld. I feel that Motorpsycho has just gotten over his departure with this album.”

Na met verschillende drummers opgetreden te hebben koos de band voor Kenneth Kapstad als nieuwe vaste kracht. “Het valt eindelijk allemaal op zijn plaats. We geven nu betere shows dan ooit. We zijn vrijer, energieker en strakker geworden.”

After performing with several different drummers, the band chose Kenneth Kapstad as the new constant factor. “It all finally fell into place. Right now we are performing better shows than ever. We have become more free, more energetic and tighter.”

Fruit

De nieuwste plaat van Motorpsycho heet Heavy Metal Fruit. “Een fantastische woordcombinatie”, aldus Sæther. “Ik heb daar gelijk heel veel beelden bij in mijn hoofd. Iemand die gek is op heavy metal, maar ook letterlijk heavy metal fruit.”

Motorpsycho’s newest record is called ‘Heavy Metal Fruit’. “A fantastic word combination,” according to Sæther. “I get a lot of images in my head immediately. Someone who loves heavy metal, but also literally heavy metal fruit.”

“Een headbangende banaan ofzo, haha. Het mooie eraan vind ik dat het twee begrippen zijn die eigenlijk helemaal niet bij elkaar passen.”

“A headbanging banana, something like that, hahaha. What I like about it, is the fact that those two components actually don’t match at all.”

Blue Oyster Cult

Het album is vernoemd naar een nummer van Blue Oyster Cult, maar bij die associatie wil Sæther het graag laten. “Blue Oyster Cult is volgens mij een van de meest ondergewaardeerde bands ooit. Niemand durft er openlijk voor uit te komen fan van die band te zijn. Die kant moet het met Motorpsycho natuurlijk niet op.”

The album is named after a song by Blue Oyster Cult, but that’s the only association Sæther is willing to accept. “Blue Oyster Cult is one of the most underrated bands ever, I think. Nobody ever openly admits to being a fan of that band. Of course that’s not the direction that Motorpsycho wants to go in.”

De bassist omschrijft de nieuwe plaat als “het hardste dat we ooit gemaakt hebben. Harder nog dan Angels and Daemons. Dit album bevat ons meest losse werk, er zit veel improvisatie in de nummers.”

The bassist describes the new record as “the hardest we ever made. Even harder than ‘Angels and Daemons’. This album contains our loosest work, there is a lot of improvisation in the songs.”

Die nieuwe insteek is voornamelijk te danken aan Kapstad, vindt Sæther. “Hij heeft jazz gestudeerd aan het conservatorium, en dat merk je. Jazzdrummers hebben toch altijd een wat losse groove. Daarnaast is hij een meester in improviseren,wat bij ons vooral in de liveshows heel belangrijk is.”

This new way of doing things is mainly thanks to Kapstad, Sæther feels. “He studied jazz at the conservatory, and it shows. Jazzdrummers always have a somewhat loose groove. Also, he is a master at improvisation, which is important for us, especially in the live shows.”

Feestje

Party

Een feestje ter ere van het jubileum geeft het drietal niet. “Nee, dat zou toch alleen maar tegenvallen. Als we bijvoorbeeld een jubileumoptreden zouden doen, dan móét het een goede show zijn, en spelen we vast belabberd.”

The triumvirate does not organise a party to celebrate their jubilee. “No, that would only be an anticlimax. For instance, were we to do a jubilee concert, then it has to be a good show, and you’ll see that then we suck.”

“Zo werken die dingen altijd, toch?”, aldus Sæther. “Het is sowieso interessanter om vooruit te kijken dan terug.”

“That’s how these things work, right?”, Sæther feels. “In any case, it’s more interesting to look forward than it is to look back.”
