I joined it and I get messages in my email account. But is that it? Isn't there some kind of message board like this on that yahoo group thing? There's some mysterious "get web access" function in my account but I only ever get into a "click here" and "continue" loop and nothing noticable (to me) else happens. Oh I hate this internet crap.

Motortrades is a mailing list. The mailing list provider is Yahoo Groups. Yahoo Groups hosts a homepage for each mailing list that contains the entire message archive. Members can also administrate their memberships and settings at the homepage. Other than that the mailing list homepage does not offer any valuable functionality. Basically the mailing list homepage is only worthwile for the message archive, if one is interested in that. All other functions like subscribing, unsubscribing or switching to digest can also be administrated by e-mail (instructions for this can be found at the bottom of each mail distributed by the list). In order to log into the mailing list homepage one needs a Yahoo account (I think, it's been some time, really). So if you are receiving the group messages and don't care for the message archive you basically don't need to bother about the Yahoo Groups homepage.

Motortrades was founded in 2001 because the discussion and trading of live recordings on g35 — back then still the main discussion forum for psychnauts — grew to such a volume that the non-trading members of g35 complained about it. Another reason to move the trading discussion to a more private forum with restricted membership was that the band felt uncomfortable with amateur live recordings being spread effectively and widely to many hundreds of fans. In the fall of 2000 a CD-R-tree was run on g35 which distributed a five disc tour compilation of the "Let them eat cake"-tour to almost 100 psychonauts across europe. During the process an engaged group of collectors and traders formed and eventually the trading discussion was moved to Motortrades. The first years of the mailing list up to 2004 were very fruitful because CD-R burners became a common and affordable technology which made trading live recordings very easy and accessible. It was also the height of Motorpsycho's popularity so there was a huge interest in live recordings. Entire tours (2001 and 2002) were recorded and distributed to the members of Motortrades. A great deal of older recordings was also unearthed and circulated. With the advent of affordable broadband internet access combined with the introduction of the bittorrent technology in the middle of the '00-years the trading world changed radically: It was no longer necessary to find trading partners in mailing lists with whom you would swap physical CD-Rs. Every live recording ever made and then some could be downloaded from torrent sites like Trader's Den, Sharing the Groove, Etree or Dime-A-Dozen, the latter which is still going strong and which is THE resource to get unofficial live recordings. Other trading communities however became pointless when artists decided to release entire tours as well as large chunks from their live-legacy officially. Our community, Motortrades, was of course also affected by the change in the trading culture so the e-mail traffic decreased and people just downloaded the latest show from a torrent tracker. That is why nowadays Motortrades hosts a private torrent tracker dedicated to Motorpsycho live recordings. Access to this tracker is only granted to members of the mailing list and every member receives the info how to be invited to the tracker upon subscribing to the list.

With almost 200 members Motortrades still assembles many long time and hardcore tapers, traders and collectors. However, some important individuals have dropped out of game because you can't just travel to every show the band plays and tape it for so many years. Which means that despite the improvement of technology (regarding both recording equipment and distribution channels) less Motorpsycho shows are being recorded than 200-2003. Until the band actually decides to release complete concerts and tours this is something we will have to work on.

I get it now. I didn't realize I was only half registered to motortrades all this time (didn't finish the process properly I guess) and just got confused. I received all the mail traffic but couldn't make anything out of it.

Found myself browsing the extensive UnOff archive (like so many times) and found an interview from 2002 during which the interviewer Scott Heller (SH) discusses "Motortrades" with the band. Thought I quote it here, some cool stuff:

SH: Have you heard of this group on the internet called Motortraders? It is a very exclusive group that you have to be invited to join of people trade nearly exclusively MP recordings.

              Geb: Ok… cool.

SH: There are 45 members and it is run by some Norwegian guys, two of which will record every night of this except tonight. It is easier to take the ferry to Hamburg then to come here first. But… they are very dedicated…

              Bent: That's good!

Geb: We might know them if it is Anders and…

              SH: Yes.

Bent: Great people. I think it is fun. We have been playing along with this whole Grateful dead thingy all the time anyway. It is free music. Go and get it… as long as you don't steal it. To see that people pick up on it and see that it is worth it to tag along on a whole tour and record the whole thing, is a tip of the hat to us. It means that we are doing something that is valuable. That is a good feeling for us, that people care that much, is mind blowing.

SH: I totally agree. I think it is a tribute and an honor for any band. I think it's quite rare that a band can pull together an interesting and diverse selection of music that differs enough that people will follow them. I would guess there are 20 or 30 bands in the world that do that.

Geb: Yeah. Thats right. Are you one of these Motortraders?

SH: Yes, I am… For example, for the last tour, I have one of the nights from Trondheim, Rome, Copenhagen, Halden, Kristiansand, Biel. And they are very interesting to hear all the differences.

Geb: Kristiansand, that is with horns, right…
