Diego!!!! Gotta love him.

June 18, 2010 at 14:10 #17638so the Aussies weren’t that good.
June 18, 2010 at 14:54 #17639Of course not, but neither were Serbia
June 19, 2010 at 07:29 #17640Hm? Serbia played well against Germany. Their Flying Serbman Trick might be overused by now, though.
June 19, 2010 at 17:26 #17641They played ok. Good defensive football and quick transitions. Considering they have a relatively ok rank on the FIFA ranking, they should have played better, and especially since Germany was one man down! They had a few big chances, and their goal was very nice, but aside from that, Germany was far the better team…
June 21, 2010 at 19:34 #17642Far better? I must disagree there.
Poor Switzerland today. Referee madness. Though we did play quite badly too.
June 21, 2010 at 20:43 #17643Code:Though we did play quite badly too.and against spain , too.
hope that spain will win the next game and honduras and chile will play 0:0
sorry, but I don’t like the football that the swiss and others like greece play.
and serbia was much better than germany over the whole game, besides the 15 minutes after the break, imo
June 21, 2010 at 22:51 #17644Absolutely. I find it sad to see the Swiss so defensive. It worked against Spain but it actually helped Chile to win. And for a non-swiss it simply must be unattractive. Though they were forced to play defensive after the red card.
I expect them to go out and PLAY against Honduras. Either going down a-blazin’ or get proudly into the next round. And there they can’t just simply wait for an opening against the likes of Brasil or Portugal or whoever. That’s no way to play a tournament.
Even Greece went quite offensive against Nigeria.
June 25, 2010 at 15:48 #17645Argentinia have left the strongest impression so far but I still think Brazil’s gonna make it in the end (despite the poor perfomance against Protugal right now).
However, the best thing about this World Cup is Germany vs England on Sunday! I hope for a dramatic 3-3 after extra time and Germany’s almost traditional victory on penalties!
June 27, 2010 at 09:21 #17646Quote:Argentina? Italia? Ghana? Spain? Switzerland?Still 3 out of 5.
Oh the swiss were baaaaaaaaaaaaad. Probably the lamest team of all.
I hope England wins, haha, but most of all I hope it’ll be an entertaining game. Not this Brasil-Portugal doodoo.
June 28, 2010 at 09:34 #17647Me contributing to a thread about soccer, my Dad will be so proud of me…
Just wanted to say to all the Germans present: congratulations with your masterful game against the English. You created your chances and counters instead of waiting for the ball to fall in the right place at the right time. As half a Brit, it hurt a bit of course. I won’t play the “what if” game and will only say that it was a shame the second British goal wasn’t counted. But that still would have made it 4-2 in the end, I think.
Here’s hoping for a good game this afternoon between the Dutch and the Slovaks! The Dutch half of me still rejoices, just as long they keep focused on every game individually. So often the Dutch have gotten overconfident after winning a couple of games in a tournament, which resulted in them underestimating their next opponents, not playing their best players and ultimately their defeat. Just keep playing like you have been, hahaha!
Orange amplifiers! Old phase shifters! Gebhardt’ signature drumsticks! Dillinger Ecsape Plan’s “Option Paralysis” blasting out of the speakers! Wish I could be a fly in the vault and witness the compilation of Tim’s Monster Deluxe! Aahh, I feel much better now…
Greets,

June 28, 2010 at 10:08 #17648Quote:I hope it’ll be an entertaining game. And you got it and beyond. Oh my nerves. What a bizarre game. The “what if…” game can easily be played because up to the 2:0 the english were the weaker team. But then they fought back and after a strong period it was as important to get that 2:2 as it was as devastating not to get it. It broke them. It would have been an intense second half which still could have ended either way. Goals #3 when the english defense stood really bad and especially #4 when Barry didn’t even bother to run were the result of a shattered England. So Germany could play to its strength and looked great doing so. They have an impressive collective as long as there are no obstacles like strong adversaries and referees.
I don’t want to step on german toes here, and there’s not much interest here anyway, but it is quite annoying to read in german medias how Argentina won against Mexico because of the referees.
June 28, 2010 at 13:03 #17649Quote:but it is quite annoying to read in german medias how Argentina won against Mexico because of the referees.Absolutely right! That’s called ‘applying double standards’, I guess, and it’s something the german media are very good at!
I’m still very happy about the way they played: they were strong, quick and, as Thomas rightly mentioned, creative in generating chances. It’s true that Lampard’s goal, if allowed, could have been a turning point, but since we won 4-1 and were the overall better team the bitter taste because of the ref’s decision isn’t as strong as it could have been.
Unusually, I’m going for the Dutch today, they played well so far (as always) and I’d love to see them in a quarterfinal against Brazil.
Btw, thanks for the congrats, Thomas! It’s an honor to hear that from an english person (even if only half-english).
June 30, 2010 at 09:42 #17650Mir fehlen die englischen Worte hierzu, drum in Deutsch: Gerade weil das 2:2 ein turning point war, macht das deutliche 4:1 den Sieg nicht klarer/verdienter.
With Jogi, Germany really plays much more attractive. Less physical, more tempo. So far Spain has made the strongest impact on me. And then Argentina. Uruguay’s a surprise. They somehow remind me how Germany was before now. I find Brasil and Netherlands quite boring to watch. I’ve been a big orange fan during the eighties but now I’m with Cruyff there. Brasil I liked back then, too with Zico and Socrates but my fascination has long worn off since. But it might be a good fight when they play each other.
All in all, it’s quite the disappointing tournament, though. I’d say quality and high tension were rare feats for neutral watchers. I only remember some drama in the last ten minutes of Italia vs Slovakia. Almost all other games were okayish. Eye candy was Argentina and Spain in their best moments and Germany’s really strong first 20 minutes against England.
