I love Mogwai! I think “Happy Songs for Happy People” is their best album
September 1, 2010 at 11:01 #12730MOGWAI, from Glasgow Scottland
is one of my absolutely favorite bands besides mp.
check out their current live-dvd BURNING, which is gorgeous.
if you don’t know them, start with their 1997-album Young Team.
September 2, 2010 at 22:26 #12731I thought I would throw out a couple of the less obvious ones. I’ve been digging Shooter Jennings and Hierophant’s Black Ribbons with Stephen King as DJ. It’s a bit flaed but it has some killer stuff including the outragous “F%#k you I’m Famous”
From the older realms, Brian Auger and the Oblivian Express. (Love the Hammond organ)
Hawkwind. Just about anything by Zero 7. And run out and get Zappa Wazoo and Imaginary Diseases. It’s the “Zappa Jazz” stuff live. Imaginary Diseases is particularly awesome. Very good.
September 2, 2010 at 22:31 #12732Speaking of more music. Have bass (and effects) will travel. Anyone got a floor I could crash on for a bit and a band that needs a versatile and unique bassist. I would drop it all in a heartbeat to get to Europe just to play. No, really.
Live Music is the Best. (SNicker, snicker)
September 3, 2010 at 20:16 #12733Hi Seattle Psychonaut!
If you would like to come to Norway I have both floor and band thet needs a bad-ass bassist!
Check it out @ myspace.com/jmbonthesea
September 3, 2010 at 21:50 #12734The player kept glitching but I got some good bits and pieces. I like Flamoemanic and Nikogashnik. Any long space jams? Oslo huh?
September 3, 2010 at 22:31 #12735Here’s a couple youtubes of the band I mentioned
you will have to turn up the volume
September 10, 2010 at 01:17 #12736This is all quite far away from the MP-universe but it’s still great stuff imho. You will probably have come across most of these but maybe not all of them!
“Modest Mouse”. One of my favs besides mp!

“Hellsongs” from Sweden, very sweet. I bet you’ll understand their concept quite quickly…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiBdX-FU0og&feature=related
“The National” from the US. Only discovered them last year, great stuff, especially the voice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgRsYkKb1eI&feature=related
“Elbow” from Scotland. Love it or leave it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jECvwTj9bM (from their debut “Asleep in the back”, listen to the whole song, it’s totally worth it!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnmD_2rNJY8 (from their last album “The seldom seen kid”)
Anyone seen this fantastic band live during their much-too-short period of existance?

“Archie Bronson Outfit”. This is still growing on me but I gotta feeling it’s gonna be big…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtzvS2X7C1w
“Portugal. The Man” from the US. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you will pretty soon!

“Herman Dune”. Singer-songwriter-stuff, very sweet again…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmSKEbeSUPU&feature=related
“Belle and Sebastian”. They have the most wonderful melodies i’ve ever heard!

To finish this I give you sth controversial…

I reckon nothing is further apart than old-school rock music and HipHop, so I guess some of you can’t relate to this at all…, but man! What a punch these guys have!
September 14, 2010 at 11:21 #12737One of my favourite bands out there are Cardiacs, and their double album “Sing to God” is in my opinion a masterpiece.
Sadly, their singer, Tim Smith, had a heart attack a while back, so no one knows when their new album will see the light of day. I’m currently enjoying their two most recent live albums, “Special Garage Concert Vol. 1 and 2”.

Quote:I reckon nothing is further apart than old-school rock music and HipHop,I disagree. Not even because of hiphop’s manner of recycling but mostly because it has the same louder! fatter! meaner! attitude. And look what the Beastie Boys do. I’d even say that lots of palefaced introvert fakedepressed indiebands are farther away from classic rockism than some (not gangsta-) cool hiphoppers. And therefore from Motorpsycho. Like N.E.R.D., who I like. Or Arrested Development. The Hippie Hiphoppers.
September 15, 2010 at 14:32 #12739I see your point, supernaut. I was referring to the kind of music rather than attitude. Concerning the latter I agree!
September 15, 2010 at 16:30 #12740I must say that even dancing at a club with good house music can create a psychedelic atmosphere. Music can be different but the feeling it creates can often be similar.
This is one hard rocking hip hop song as well:
October 1, 2010 at 15:55 #12741SIMPLE MINDS!
ok….
one more moment….
well I guess the first shock has ebbed down about now, so now we can talk. No really, I discovered something for myself again like last year when I found how brilliant early Genesis were. Simple Minds were once a very visionary and creative band. I’m old enough to remember their mid to late 80ties mainstream hits and I admit I actually liked some of them and never got into their early stuff. But now, oh my… especially the albums Real to Real Cacophony, Empires And Dance and Sister Feelings Call. That last one is hard to find on vinyl (and not at all on CD) so one has to get the weaker Sons and Fascinations CD on which it is featured as kind of bonus album. But only on the 2003 re-release in its entirety, mind, which adds up to 15 songs. There’s an earlier release omitting 2 tracks, and those were not the worst.
Traces of Kraftwerk, Bowie, Roxy Music, Frippy guitar work and lots of nice atmospheres, grooves and soundscapes are very present.
So here’s some from REAL TO REAL CACOPHONY:
