I chose (and like) "Welcome to Algiers" because it was massive live and stood very well up to the classics. "And Your Bird Can Sing", well it's a Beatles song. Helmet playing Beatles is quite worth a listen and does of course not sound like the rest of the album.
I can't follow the melody/aggression point. I find no more or less aggressive and melodic singing and riffing on the new albums than on the old ones. Remember the melodic "Unsung", "Wilma's rainbow", "Biscuits for Smut" or "Driving Nowhere" for instance and there's lots of much more abrasive aggressive stuff on the last 3 albums. They might need more listens than the old ones did back when we were younger and more impressionable?
I have no problem with Cornell's statement there because he's right. He's got something to rightfully be proud of.
December 2, 2010 at 15:30 #12775But I agree on the Stanier part. But what can you do?
December 2, 2010 at 15:32 #127762 greats:
Page is a zep fan, obviously.
December 6, 2010 at 14:15 #12777The new Helmet may need more listens, the last two songs do more to me too.
But it can't stand away from the fact that it's hard for me to like the way how Page sings sometimes in some songs. It's just like he would've put a pot of honey into his throat before recording. Really weird. Not that I don't like the melodic singing itself, it's just the voice that sounds so not Helmet fitting to me.
And on the other hand it's just standard drums there. Someone who's hitting them hard but it has no character to it. For me that was part of the Helmet sound. Drummers in bands like Deftones, Limp Bizkit, RATM, Korn etc have a leading role and that's what I'm missing here as well.
And yeah, that may be me but I hate it when people show off themselves even if they'd rule the world. It's an unlikable behaviour especially when you're "just" the lead singer of a damn rock n'roll band.

Quite good!
December 16, 2010 at 15:15 #12779Well somebody did something 20 years ago, so he's obliged to do it exactly like that for the rest of his life? And there was melodic singing on their first albums as well.
I don't understand your last note about the showing off.

December 21, 2010 at 20:01 #12781Neu! is quite nice. Also: "In 2010 (Michael) Rother teamed up with Steve Shelley (of Sonic Youth) and Aaron Mullan (of Tall Furs) for Hallogallo 2010, a live project to present Neu! music and some new pieces." (source: wikipedia). I've read this a while ago, since I saw a new Neu! CD in a store recently.
December 21, 2010 at 21:58 #12782here's Rother's page and a clip of the mighty Negativland 2010: http://www.michaelrother.de/de/
this sounds so now. or timeless. whatever. brilliant.
I'm also into Cluster, Harmonia, Amon Düül II and La Düsseldorf. My beloved Bowie ripped so much off there. Strangely enough I don't really get into Can. Though some parts of Tago Mago I do find quite entertaining.
here's a brilliant documentary in english: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B89-69icyc in 6 parts.
January 5, 2011 at 16:51 #12783Here is a guilty pleasure for you, these guys have the anthem thing down, and I haven't heard so much hate for one TV show in a song before.
January 27, 2011 at 21:52 #12784Hidden Orchestra – Night Walks 8O
Quote:Formerly known as Joe Acheson Quartet, Hidden Orchestra combine two live drummers and deep basslines with strong jazz and classical influences, to make cinematic, emotive, percussive, next generation music using traditional instrumentation and organic samples. The band may occupy a musical stratum all on their own, but you can detect influences as diverse as Aphex Twin, Debussy, Xploding Plastix, Radiohead, Squarepusher, Madlib and Gene Krupa.check some songs out here:

January 28, 2011 at 09:52 #12785oh nice. like it.
February 4, 2011 at 16:34 #12786For the last couple of months i've been listening a lot to a band called Warpaint.
Very good. It's groovy, melodic, kind of Radiohead/Cocteau Twins/BlondRedhead/John Frusciante in the mix but in a unique way with each song taking several turns. They got one EP out and one album. Recommended to enjoy as a whole. Live pretty good as well as you can see:
February 4, 2011 at 21:41 #12787In the middle of a post-rock onset here… I've always liked Mogwai, GYBE, … But never really listened to much else in the genre. Until I ran into God Is An Astronaut (thank you last.fm), I like it a lot. This Will Destroy you is impressive as well.
February 5, 2011 at 11:01 #12788New album by And you will know us by the trail of dead is just brilliant
