Rob, are you me? I just got into Post-Rock and listen to all those bands you've named.
I have to get the new Trail of Dead record the next days. They're one of my favorites.
EDIT: I wrote that and haven't even seen the last post. You guys scare me
February 6, 2011 at 18:44 #12790Last time I checked I was still me Yes there are very worthwhile bands in post-rock, though you have to be sort of "in the mood" for some of them. Fortunately many other forms of rock or music in general have my deep interest so there's always something to listen to.
Like for example …And you will know us by the trail of dead: I listen to that as well but have always found it a mixed bag… some really good songs (It was there that I saw you, Homage, Perfect Teenhood,…), but full albums are hardly ever interesting as a whole. Will definitely give the new one a try though.
February 7, 2011 at 13:14 #12791Yes, there are often some weaker songs on their albums but anyway I find them great to listen to as a whole. The new album works even better in that aspect besides the single "Summer of all dead souls" which seems a bit out of place. Maybe because I heard it too much when it was released as a stream. But overall really nice album which needed several replays to grow on me.
February 7, 2011 at 20:08 #12792Full Arcade Fire gig here http://bit.ly/h4pA1E
February 8, 2011 at 09:51 #12793Also well worth checking out: the band Wolf People.
Their debut proper "Steeple" is out on multiple formats, earlier offering "Tidings" just on mp3 and vinyl.
Check out their site: http://www.wolfpeople.co.uk/
Also their site on their label: http://www.jagjaguwar.com/artist.php?name=wolfpeople
And yes, that's the label run by Black Mountain. Both bands are playing Roadburn, Tilburg in april.
Greets,
Thomas

February 9, 2011 at 13:35 #12795everybody knows Melvins but I just noticed there's a gig from 2007 at Oya in great quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UduaIdeabvE&feature=related
February 9, 2011 at 14:25 #12796February 10, 2011 at 10:14 #12797I guess my taste differs somewhat from most people here, or maybe it's just my perception? Anyway, some recent favourites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjcv95BK1DE
Falkenbach, Viking Metal from Germany
Yeah, I know, Metal and Motorpsycho fans don't mix that well, at least in my understanding. But this is different. Very very melodic.
then there is the case of Biffy Clyro, a Scottish band who play a mix of alternative/indie/post-hardcore. Definitely interesting and also very melodic (one of my quality marks for musicians).

and a selection of my favourite girls …ahem. female artists
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0QlFq_Lak0
Basia Bulat

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XME-mBvP7FE
Nancy Elizabeth

Laura Marling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IENZRb8YhRg
Maria Solheim (here with Hank van Helvete of Turbonegro fame)
and there'd be a lot more I could think of…but I gotta go to work now
February 10, 2011 at 15:08 #12798I prepared for the worst when I listened to your Falkenbach clips, but hey that's quite enjoyable. Not as much pathos and bombast as other genre bands, there's a lightness about them. It's like when all the other viking metal bands go to battle, Falkenbach just watch them die in vain, then have a smoke, and then go to work on the fields for winter's crop.
February 19, 2011 at 13:28 #12799new Radiohead ready for official download: http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/

February 24, 2011 at 17:14 #12800please marry me, siouxsie sioux.
February 28, 2011 at 15:38 #12801WOLF PEOPLE from the UK have blown my mind the last months with their debut full lenght "Steeple" wich was released on Jagjaguwar last October! Fantastic psychedelic Folk- and Hard Rock! Of the many new psych bands out there probably my favourite!
March 1, 2011 at 10:58 #12802Agreed totally, fillmore! No idea such music could still be made, it sounds like it was recorded 40 years ago, with all that doubletracking and mechanical echo. Especially the voice brings back early British prog – the closest comparison is Greg Lake singing on the early King Crimson records. Going to check them out live soon!
Greetings,
Thomas
edit: It seems this band lives in the place where their labelbosses Black Mountain only seem to get to occasionaly.
March 6, 2011 at 18:53 #12803I've just watched Valhalla Rising. A very moody, creepy, slow ambient movie about northern viking mysticism. What looks from the DVD cover like a viking version of a 300 flick is everything else but. Mads Mikkelsen plays a mystical slave, warrior, god or just man?
The score is by 2 guys playing with The Bleeder Group and Svartbag. The latter group seems to do quite similar music as is heard in the movie. Here an excerpt, I find it awesomely mesmerizing uplifting transcending:
