Hm, the cool thing is that they take these pretty simple/generic (especially on the bass) riffs, and just jam them to pieces, and fucking hell does it ever work.. Bomb proof is one good example, the first part of GT and the jammy midsection as well..
January 18, 2010 at 19:53 #14974Still nothing here… … why… cruel world… etc.

I agree with you here. It’s the weakest song on the album, weak being a harsh word. I love the initial feel of the song, but i think they destroy an otherwise wonderful tune with that “no good noodling” in the middle. It firmly destroys the feel, plus the comeback is oddly misplaced if you ask me. But apart from this, i’ve got nothing to complain about.
As for the upcoming live version, it’ll be fun to see how they’ll take on that acapella harmony outro. Do i smell an overloaded Boss RC-20?
Quote:oh I just found the Yes reference in Gullible. It’s just before the duet comes in, a soft Close to the Edge synthi figure. hooray.I guess you’re thinking of the whole “i get up, i get down” bit here. That’s more mellotron, isn’t it? on GT?

January 18, 2010 at 23:29 #14978Yes exactly, I get Up I get Down. Not sure if it’s mellotron. Probably is.
I get easily bored by jamming to pieces of simple structures. Starhammer works great though. That one’s massive and catching. Well it’s actually not simple at all. Funnily enough I always enjoyed The Wheel or the Nothing to Say/Mountain live combo where they did just that simple riffing. Maybe because those always felt like being on the spot, despite lenghty jamming.
Nowadays I’m more into the elaborate, tricky and rhytmically overlapping stuff from Alchemyst and Sunship. But besides that, I mostly miss songs. Starmelt, Hey Jane, Ozzylot, Hyena, Nerve Tattoo, Serpentine, I’m always in for a catchy refrain and that’s one of their mostbiggest strenghts that got put aside here.
Bah, in a few days I’ll come to admire HMF for what it is anyway. The impressive already outweighs the not-so-very by far even now. I just hope the next one will feature more “songs” again. Or the perfect mixture like on TM and AADAP.

January 19, 2010 at 11:26 #14984After spinning HMF the only thing I feel like doing is spinning it again.
All albums since Trust Us have given me an urge to put on Trust Us afterwards.
HMF doesn’t.
It’s proven. Best album since Trust Us.
January 19, 2010 at 12:50 #14985Since everybody is sharing their status, I might just as well: no CD or LP yet arrived here. I preordered at amazon and both at the same time. They were scheduled to be sent on the 14th, but of course nothing went out, as I read here there was some vinyl-delay. They decided to send both formats seperately. Fine by me, but I’d like at least one of them now. Thats why I hate Friday releases, they never work out the way they should (for me). I always get my stuff only a week later.
And I just checked, they havent even sent the CD yet. Booh.
