    @welsh rarebit: where in the Uk do you live? I’m in London.

    on-topic: most overrated for me has got to be both tusslers, especialy the 2nd. at least the first one was fun, but the second just doesn’t move me at all.

      A short note to In The Family, I agree the guitar/mellotron line really is very slick, but then…

      @Evol

      I love Hyena. Such a fantastically positively naive energetic boy-girl-dream song. And that Immigrant Song groove and the ringing cordal descent in the bridge.

      I can’t help picturing Slash in the Flood. No J for me there. I’d even rather hear J in Hyena, come to think of it. And btw You Lose, who got a lot of dirt here, is one of my faves on that record.

      Some people critise the sound on BHBC but I prefer it to the one on LLM. That one is a bit too much on the murky side for me.

      @kippenhok: As you might have guessed, in Wales, a bit outside Cardiff. Not Motorpsycho heartland. But I do have converted mates.

      I was by the way wrong. Motorpsycho albums are not underrated in the UK. To be underrated they have to be known. It is unknown they are, not underrated. And, otherdemon is of course right, 8 Soothing Songs is crap with the exception of the songs mentioned. But again, they were young and not fully formed. I’ve sort of always counted Demon Box as the first proper album, that’s when things fall into place.

        Lobotomizer is the worst album!….nuff said. It’s crap (counting out Hogwash and Frances. The so called “Killer” should never have been a drummer in my opinion. Sounds like a drunken schoolband drummer. Which clearly makes its mark. Perhaps it could have been better with Geb or Kapstad at the sticks

        As for overrated….i think Soothe is pretty high up there. I find myself almost never listening to that one. Don’t really like the songs on there.

        I guess one could say that this forum is usually very fanboyish in many ways, but that’s really just because Motorpsycho is such a special act and holds a very special place in all the hearts in here I guess.

        I know for sure they have rocked my soul a thousand times, both on record and live since the early days.

        It is with a feeling of guilt that I put the following text down on “paper”, who am I to put down the work of such musical genius, a band which has given me my biggest musical highs again and again.

        I agree, maybe it is a bit too much on the fanboy-side in here ;) but that doesn’t mean that I’m not a huge fan, but I live by the rule “Kill your darlings” – always ask the question if this is good enough and can I live with this (now look how far that got me, hehe). We’ve had a fun/good/interesting discussion/argument about COTF, and I’m looking forward to the next.

        About over or underrated – I think that the bands fame, or lack of such, is something they wanted all along, I’ve never seen as much pain in anyones eye as when they are “forced” to come on a talkshow on norwegian TV (store studio f.eks) and play “their last hit single”, it’s ridicolous to watch. I can’t just listen to one song, and then be done with it, MP is a album band, each album is a story, and each song needs to be heard in order to get the big picture.

        @GBD

        Soothe were never that highly rated, or was it? don’t remember…

        O well, I still think BHWC is overrated, not because it is a particulary bad album, but the sensation of disapointment I got from it when I listened to it for the first time *shudder*

        sail on ‘nauts!

        I totally agree, their prime time TV appearances are mostly painful for band and fans. Luckily they are very few and far between! When I said “unknown in UK”, I meant just that as a fact. I don’t suggest that they ever wanted to be commercial, and I am certainly not suggesting that they should be. But I guess it is just me that think this band is so damned good that I find it strange that more people haven’t discovered it. That is of course totally irrelevant. I like it so I’m happy, they can apparently live off it so they are presumably happy. So, I really don’t care about all those others.

        And it’s definitively an album band, not a singles band. I almost never plays just one MP song, or make playlists. Just whole albums or concerts.

          hey welsh rarebit, have you ever been to Snowdonia? can you recommend it as a holiday spot?

            I must correct myself, just listened to Beyond the Flood for the first time in years, I actually liked it to the end. I remember enjoying it up to the solo parts, but then… and now… hm… maybe it’s the rainy day outside. The stringed/mellotroned(?) fade out is especially beautiful.

                This is a good topic, motivates me to grab some of the old records and play them. I just finished listening to It’s A Love Cult & the Serpentine EP, and i must say i loved it. Strange, when it came out i loved it a lot, then the records afterwards came and i didn’t play this one a lot, and now i sorta re-discovered it.

                And yeah, BH/BC rocks. Fantastic record, i think that one will be the play of tomorrow.

                Sorry everyone else, a bit off topic, but yeah, I’ve been to Snowdonia. If you’re into walking in mountains or even climbing it’s superb. Edmund Hillary trained there before he went off to climb Mount Everest. (If not you can always take the steam train to the summit of Mount Snowdon and get something to eat in the cafeteria). Apart from that it’s maybe not the hottest holiday spot in UK. But it is beautiful up there.

                  So I’ve heard. I had plans to go to Snowdonia this summer, but they changed. Maybe next year. A must see for a Led Zeppelin nut. :)

                    Disclaimer: I haven’t read the entire thread.

                    I must first say:

                    “Carousel” is the best hidden gem on Love Cult. “Neverland” & “Composite Head” sucks the most. At least that’s my opinion ;) And if I had to pick a worst album, it’d probably be IALC.

                    As for most overrated album… That’s really tough. I’m leaning towards LTEC or Phanerothyme. I know many many people who like them, and I like them myself and truly love many songs on those two, and I have great memories from the time when they came out and I listened to them non-stop, and I still enjoy popping LTEC or Phan in my player now and then, but I think they’re overrated.

                    If I had to choose a third one, it might be Little Lucid Moments (gasp!) – yes, it’s an amazing fantastic complex inspiring fascinating impressive piece of work, which resonates deep in me at times, yet I feel it’s a bit overrated. I don’t know how to

                    explain it better. Maybe I need to listen to it even more, to discover more of its deeper layers.

                    Anyhow, choosing anything “worst” related to motorpsycho is difficult for me, since they’re one of the few bands of which I like practically everything. They’re one of those few bands who’ve yet to fail to impress me. But of course, “Neverland” is a hate-song of mine, and usually my piss-break song during concerts…

                    Rolf

                    np: Uriah Heep – Demons & Wizards (MP must’ve heard this one! E.g. the song “Paradise” reminds me of MP, the guitar and the bass at least.)

                      Am i the only one who really likes Neverland? And Composite Head? Looks like it.

                      #12222

                      I really love Composite Head as well as Neverland, and in fact, the pop period in MP is the best, devoid of the screechiness and satanic idiocy. So, the worst album? For me, it is Lobotomizer, then 8 Soothing Songs is the 2nd worst, as well as for the most part, Demon’s Box and for some part, Black Hole.
