Harmonium
A french-canadian acoustic outfit. Incredible melodies, harmonies and just a general happy feeling smiling smiley

These two are from their 1975 album "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison", a concept album about the four seasons and an imaginary fifth. Cool stuff.

Genesis!

I mean...really! Yes that's Phil Collins there. But only on the drums, mind. I'm talking bout their early stuff with Peter Gabriel, this is so far out, I never realized that. And I guess that's where the Supersonic Scientist comes from. He gets a mention in their 26min epic "Supper's Ready", a brilliant lil' tune, from the album Foxtrot. So that one, Nursery Cryme and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway me really fancy. Not so much Selling England by the Pound, though, because that album marks the beginning of cheesy keyboard sounds. On the earlier albums Banks played hammonds and mellotron and piano, much better.
And I think Beck has heard "I Know What I Like" before...

And check Peter here. This is pure Maynard J Keenan 1973!

For me nowadays it's :

Ernest Ranglin (Below the Bassline)

The Meters

Madensuyu (D is Done) 2 piece (drummer- guitar) Belgian band, energy of their shows feels like 16 horsepower & joy division, desperate to see more shows of them, gotta see them live, heard CD first and thought it was kinda weird, but after 1 show I became addicted to their latest record...
Check them out here : [www.youtube.com]

AmenRa (Mass IIII) Belgian Neurosis!

MP (Roadworks I) I know the thread says besides MP, but it just slipped in

Orb (Live 93) still great

Alice Donut (Mule) probably their best album

Nova Mob (Last days of Pompei) Grant Hart is so great! Luv this album

Can (Ege Bamyasi)

Arvo Pärt (Fratres) if you like Johann Johansonn (Fordlandia), this is the original

saw a show of Emilliana Torrini (I work in a venue as a sound engineer) last week and liked that a lot too!
haven't got any CD's of her, if you guys have any suggestions? Dunno if it's cool to say if I like Torrini,
but if I see people writing Queensryche I assume it's OK

Last but not least :
SunnO))) with Boris (Altar) Still amazed by this beautiful album...
Think MP should do something with SunnO))) instead of Biafra
hey I'm a Kennedys fan (first 2 records especially)! what an honour to record with him, now SunnO))) !!!
or Bohren, but I think it's too slow

bye

What an amazing drummer!!! Did hear of the name Zach Hill, but never could think this guy was such a beast!
Akoochahoola! Or whatever something like that...

bout Mob en Mule : throwing a lot of CD's I bought in the past into my i pod and got stuck for a while with these 2 albums (again winking smiley)
so when I saw this thread, I didn't want to leave them out!
'Mrs Hayes, takes a fork...' what a great, crazy album that was

Oops, forgot one : Snuffsaidbut...... by Snuff
seem to love this one also for another time in my life, dunno why, it's so catchy!

@gert: It does not matter if it's "cool" to say if you like one artist or another. Emiliana Torrini is quite nice, and I recommend her album "Fisherman's Woman". By incident that is also the only one I got by her.
Interesting that you say Bohren is too slow. That's their thing. But they did speed up a *bit* on some of their earlier stuff, like "Gore Motel". After having listened to "Geisterfaust" which is painfully slow (and I mean painfully) I was at points surprised how fast "Gore Motel" is. In context, mind you, compared to other bands it's still freakishly slow.
Oh and while I comment on your stuff, I also like Can a lot. If you haven't yet, try out "Future Days" and "Soundtracks".

~

So these last days I re-discovered some of the 90s stuff, namely Life of Agony and Bush (both could be considered hard rock or grunge in some sense). Apart from that I listened a lot to Celtic Frost (black metal from Switzerland, their last album "Monotheist" is great and depressing, too), Dark Tranquillity (melodic death metal from Sweden with some great, well, yeah, melodies), dEUS (that belgian band you know) and some NOFX (their 19-minute punk rock epic "The Decline" in repeat, mostly).

Thanx for the Torrini tip. What a band she has! Definately gonna check out 'Fisherman's Woman'

Only have the latest album of Bohren, saw a gig of them once and didn't know which album to choose from....
Like Dolores a lot, sometimes leave it on during the whole day, gets you in sort of a contemplating mind you know

If you mention Can, I almost have their whole collection incl. 'Future Days' and 'Soundtracks'
Have you already seen the concert in the sportshall which appears on the CanDVDBox?
Almost as great as MP @ Paradiso :-)

Listened to NOFX a lot when I was younger, didn't know they had a punkrock epic of 19 min?

@gert
Zach also plays in the band The Ladies. Worth checking out.
Nova Mob I've seen quite a few times. Few months ago Grant Hart came solo, was kinda light and shade. The songs and the passion were there, but there was something sad or rather tragic even about it. Can't really explain. He might have just as well enjoyed it. I dunno...
Yes, Alice Donut's Mule, wonderful. Mother of Christ! Mrs Hayes! Bottom of the Chain! J Train Downtown! I haven't paid attention to their recent work though...

@jtr
yay, Frost, local heroes! winking smiley

Saw Nova Mob a couple of times live, seems ages ago actually.
With both Hart on guitar or drums. I loved the bassplayer...
First time I saw them (on a festival) Hart threw his guitaramp into the frontstage area which totally ended the show.
Amp broken into pieces. Dunno exactly why he did it, but I seem to recall some troubles with a photographer...?

Last time I saw them, Grant was on drums, he looked completely wasted, not sure if he knew he was there...
I thought this was already tragic, until I later heard he threw everybody out of the band to continue solo.
Never saw him solo actually, had a listen to a live solo disc, but I felt a bit sick afterwards. The songs are there, but there's indeed something tragic 'bout it...
Hard to listen too! A bit sad indeed...

While I'm writing this, I want to mention a nice book I'm reading nowadays. A colleague at work mistakenly ordered it twice on the net smiling smiley
'Our band could be your life' by Michael Azzerad, scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991.
Great stories on great bands like Fugazi, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Mission of Burma, Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr....
Struggling to survive and traveling through the US with them. If you're into these bands, it's definately a page turner!

concerning bohren: get "sunset mission"...their definite masterpiece! (probably the easiest one to approach)

right now i'm really into blumfeld again (i think they should also work if you don't understand german..at least the early records)

others on rotation currently:

mice parade
loose fur
lars horntveth
meshuggah

Hey Marc,

I thought Dolores was a masterpiece too! Thanks for the tip guys...

Waaw Meshuggah, were math meets music! Incredible band from the North

Now listening to something completely different actually, not bad at all :
Djivan Gasparajan with Michael Brook - Black Rock
released on RealWorld (Gabriel's label) beautiful world music soundscapes,
Gasparajan is an Armenian flute player. He plays duduk, sort of an ancient oboe
the fact that I had dinner tonight in a Tibetan restaurant is probably the cause for this choice
Strangely enough it reminds me of King Crimson (Discipline - Three of a perfect pair)

@gert: yap I've seen that concert by Can (the DVD box was unfortunately veeery expensive) and I gotta admit, I found it rather weird.

And yes, NOFX released a 19-mins-punkrock epic called "The Decline" in 1999. And they even play it live sometimes.
Well actually it's "only" 18:21 minutes long, but it is definately a strong tip, even if you're not into punk (and I'm not - the only punk band I like is NOFX -- and sadly I've only seen them live once - Trondheim 2007), just to see how the genre boundaries can be bent.

More on that: [en.wikipedia.org]
You can also find various fan-made videos and even some live recordings on youtube. smiling smiley

sounds interesting!

The Nova Mob bassist, Tom Merkl, was at a time when it was totally uncool to be impressed by a musician's skills one of the very few player that I couldn't help being impressed of. He played lotsa notes but very melodic and seemed to be in total trance, just letting 'em flow.
Re: What are your favorite actual bands these days beside MP?

@ Supernaut :

Indeed Thomas Merkl was his name, total trance. Added a liquid feeling to the band...

About the Azzerad book :
It's nicely divided into chapters, so you can read the band's story in a whole
Read 4 bands up till now : 9 to go!

Here's the back-cover if you're interested

Beware : It's hard to put aside once you start reading, extremely addictive!

enjoy
