I went to my first MP gig yesterday, in Tivoli, in Utrecht. Wow! best gig i've ever been to! some things that were really great: - superb intro to un chien d'espace - great "riders on the storm"-like piano in the middle of whip that ghost - superb "Summertime Blues" and i can go on and on (and on and on) bye Ilja > and i can go on and on (and on and on) Yeah, I will ;-) Have no setlist present, but it was great! They began with 5 minute feedback on guitar and keyboards, very spacy and weird, and a bit inaccessible. It was the intro for an outstanding version of Un Chien, which lasted 20-25 minutes, and they didn't even play the last verses. Incredible, it was impossible to not being sucked into the groove/ space/ flow/ zone/ whateveryouwannacallit. And after this they went very smootly in a beautiful Upstairs/Downstairs, as if they were one and the same song. More highlights were Big Surprise (he introduced himself with "en ik ben Bent"), Whip that ghost, and never let you out. The harmonies were incredible, they surely listened a lot to the Beach Boys and Mamas & Papas (Go to California!). My friend went to the Rotterdam gig the night before, and said that was a whole different concert with lots a jazzy jams. This gig was much more rock and spacerock, and it was a very divers gig with a good mixture of new stuff and old classic (Blueberry daydream!! an amazing version of All is Loniless!!!!). No Black to comm or WWJ or Vortex Surfer, but Feel was a beautiful and very worthy last song. Great evening, great gig, great fun. Can't wait for the Effenaar gig! Bas > Have no setlist present, but it was great! I don't have a setlist either and I can't really tell in what order the songs were played, but here are some titles anyway. The first 35 mins of the show were for "un chien d'espace" followed by something instrumental I did not recognize. Then upstairs/downstairs. Other songs from "let them eat cake": - whip that ghost (very long version) - the other fool (very good version, rocked more than on the album) - never let you out - big surprise Some old songs: - blueberry daydream - all is loneliness - s.t.g. - flick of the wrist And there were: - go to california - and probably a second instrumental I did not recognize I think the encores were: - hey, jane - shakin' all over - summertime blues - the one that went away Then they reappeared for "feel". All in all 2,5 hours and never a dull moment :-) Some very good guitar-solo's especially. > (...) My friend went to the Rotterdam gig the night before, and > said that was a whole different concert with lots a jazzy jams. Wow, this one (Tivoli) was "jazzy" enough for me. The long organ solo in "whip that ghost" was about as much as I could take... Also I think that during some of the rocksongs the organ took something of the roughness away. But I must add that most of the time the keyboard really added something to their livesound; it was nice to see them as a 4-piece liveband again. And, like you said: > (...) it was a very divers gig with a good mixture of new stuff and > old classic I really enjoyed the musical diversity in the songs. Anyway, off to Eindhoven, tomorrow.
