Kvarteret 1998-03-20

Well then, another good show I must say. The boys seemed to be in a good mood and Bent was wearing a nice snekkerbukse ("carpenter's pants", HA!). Geb was hardly wearing anything, but I guess that's just part of the charm. I also saw him walking around the place before the show began and no one seemed to notice him. He should do solo shows I think. They were selling lots of t-shirts and stuff, even beanies! No records or video though. Anyway.

CAME ON:

The Skies Are Full Of Wine?
Cool song, almost "allsang" during the first verse. Bent looked a bit surprised. Geb on Banjo of course. Snah had a tall microphone.

Blueberry Daydream
Some people behind me: "where the hell is this song from, I've never heard it". Others sang along.

Waiting For The One.
Allsang!!! People need to shut up and listen more. Øystein Power had gotten some free chili nuts.

PLUGGED IN:

Taifun
Never liked it much on the album, but it's amazing live. Nothing more to say really.

Walking On The Water
A fun song which I first heard on XL while cleaning the floors of a kindergarden. I didn't like it much then, but it's always nice live.

Superstooge
The only song I disliked when I first got Trust Us. It too was much better live. I think a bit longer too, with a nice noisy ending.

STG
My favorite song. Played better than ever before. Pure genius! Snah fickled on his moog a bit and it was loud.

Ozone
Like someone has said before, Pure Blues Fun. And you know which song will be perfect as the next number.....

Starmelt
...but they played this one instead. Snah's best song and pop bliss at its best.

Young Man Blues
Then it was time for some more blues. Unlikely as it sounds this might have been the highlight of the night. It was played a lot differently from what I've seen before. At one point Geb was standing and when he was about to hit the drums really hard for the last time he just sat down instead, then he banged the drums. Bent laughed and so did most people.

Un Chien
Also a bit different from what it's been before. Really nice and noisy with a great guitar improvisation (sp?) by Snah. Cool harp sounds too, but they're old.

Psychonaut
More fun! A great song that works really well live. Without that God-awful saxophone too!

WENT AWAY:

"MERE MERE MERE MERE MERE MERE"

CAME BACK:

Hey, Jane
Bent's best pop song in years. I think the lyrics mean something.

Heartattack Mac
A surprise entry towards the end. People seemed to enjoy it a lot. And why wouldn't they? Fantastic new bit in the middle, Geb on glockenspiel and everything.

Geb gets up and takes a bow. Then he puts 1 finger up as if to ask "one more?" Bent and Snah and Geb all look at each other, okay there's time for one more. Yeah, you know which one.

Vortex Surfer
Utterly brilliant song!! This is the first time I've seen it live and I like the guitar part where on the album there is piano. Semi-porn flick on the screen, naughty naughty.

After about 2 hours and 9 minutes the show was over and I went home. Jan Frode Haugseth had a good idea on Puddefjordsbroen, there should be g35 t-shirts.

Okay, bye now. One day I am going to grow wings.

Erlend Hammer.

Yeah! Snah had the longest microphonestativ i have seen. Not in height, but in length. It was approx. 1,5 meter, i'd say. Pretty long, huh?

> Blueberry Daydream > Some people behind me: "where the hell is this song from, I've never > heard it". Others sang along.

Snah played his violin. He don't play it the usual way. He used open strings most of the time, steering the sound with his feet. Sometimes he used is middle finger to variate tone. This is pure psychedelia.

> Waiting For The One. > Allsang!!! People need to shut up and listen more. Øystein Power had > gotten some free chili nuts.

He had! And at in the end he was tired of them, and I got them. But I didn't want so many. I delivered them back. I suppose he ate them himself. I wondered why he got them. It was a one-pint glass. It was not full, I thought he got them because they had been on the floor. But he said he knew a guy, who gave them to him. I suppose he speaks the truth.

Have you noticed how not all songs do? I will come back to this problemstilling later in the mail. I has always wondered what they would do when they came to the end of the song, and the french horns came in. But it continued for one more minute, with some variations over the main theme. It was nice.

It was exceptionally groovy, and the solo was about twice as long, including some parts I have not heard before, not even at Rockefeller 6 days before I think.

I also think that Snah could have varied his main riff more than he does, when he don't sing anyway.

> STG > My favorite song. Played better than ever before. Pure genius! Snah > fickled on his moog a bit and it was loud.

It was. This was the song I freaked out too, because the guy next to me went on the toilet, and I got his space + mine. I played air-guitar and almost fell down on my knees, waving around, eyes closed and getting sweat.

> Ozone > Like someone has said before, Pure Blues Fun. And you know which song > will be perfect as the next number.....

Yeah. Ozone was cool. And you know they sing the chorus only once, and they did, and bent were sort of just kidding, and stopped singing much to early and concentrated on playing guitar! it was cool! i will remember it for the rest of mye life!

> Starmelt > ...but they played this one instead. Snah's best song and pop bliss at > its best.

Yeah. And his singing wasn't to awful either. He sang very good all the time, all the show, actually.

I didn't see this. I am angry now. I did not laugh.

There was echo on Bents voice too. Real cool. And they had a "let's hit the note all together-contest", in the beginning. They did it will. Didn't loose.

> Un Chien > Also a bit different from what it's been before. Really nice and noisy > with a great guitar improvisation (sp?) by Snah. Cool harp sounds too, > but they're old. > But were did the harp sound come from? Me and Øystein didnt understand a thing. But I reckon the guy standing at the right was controlling this. The improv-part was starting slow, with that new chord they use, instead of the old one. Then it was gradually evolving to a monster, and at the end it was just noise and it sounded like Snah took his plug and put it into 220V. It was so støyish. But it was the best, and it suddenly got silent. The stupid public started to shout and clap their hands, and continued too clap when Bent played alone and singing with his fantastic voice. This ruined it in a way, and I think the audience is as smart as my average fish.

> Psychonaut > More fun! A great song that works really well live. Without that > God-awful saxophone too!

I didn't like it. And Bent blew his string early in the set. It was a thick string. Very thick. Placed where the g-string (thin) would be on a normal guitar. I suppose he has a weird tuning on this one. He had thick strings nederst på gitaren also (øverst for oss, høyrehendte). So this is unexplainable. He maybe has too fat E-strings to make the sound fatter in the beginning, that dang-dang-dang-dang-dang, and i feed you the lies that you wanna hear-part.

Yeah, I agree.

> Heartattack Mac > A surprise entry towards the end. People seemed to enjoy it a lot. And > why wouldn't they? Fantastic new bit in the middle, Geb on glockenspiel > and everything.

M-mm! There was this song, in 4/4 that was surprisingly easy and maybe it came out of nothing, but maybe not too. Bent sang something, but there was lov output from the mic, it was impossible too hear what it was. Maybe that was the point. It was not Back to source, but maybe it was the lyrics.

It happened a lot more than this. I think it is glockenspiel on the album. Anyway, I understood the video. It is seen trough the eyes of a man. You can tell, because it is round when the woman is in the screen. In the end it zooms out, and we can see the face which saw all this. At kvarteret this did not happen, but at rockefeller last week the face of the man who saw this freezed, and was big, and watched all of us, greyish, when we got out of there.

When it was finished Erlend agreed to get my jacket, so I could write the songs which was played, because i wrote them up on note-it lapps during the whole thing. And as I walked out, this guy was standing there, saying "øystein power, øystein power, øystein power". I didn't notice him at first, but as I passed him, I wonder why i said that. And he asked my if I was Øystein Power. I wasn't, and I asked him why he thought so. This he could not redegjøre for, so I asked him how he knew I was one from the list. He didnt. We shook hands, and he I understood that he said Øystein Power to everyone, because he remembered that name from the list. He had long red hair, and this was very funny I thought. I told him Øystein and me stood together and stuff. He did not seem very excited about meeting me though. :-)

Then me and Erlend got out, walked over the puddefjordbridge. And there, I came on it: What if we have had g-35 shirts?! So we could identify each other at the concerts! It would have been really cool! And ppl could have wondered who the ppl with the g-35 shirts were! And it could "g-35 psychonauts" on it! Or "g-35 morons" or even "g-35 weirdoznotmetalheadsbutverycoolgettingchillseveryminuteonaconcert-ppl" It would be great!

I hope Erlend don't become mad with me for modifying his report, but who cares, because this morning he went to Rome, and he won't see this for a week :-).

> Okay, bye now. > One day I am going to grow wings. > Erlend Hammer.

Jan Frode, the modifyer (watch out, or I'll modify _your_ mail next time)

PS: Though I should mention..we stood next to this guy with a beard..he had a minidisc and a stereomicrophone..he recorded the whole damn thing...I got his telephonenumber..you don't..muhuahuahuahua! No seriously, if the recording is ok, this would be something. Maybe we can get Øystein from Bergen who works on Danmarksplass to burn some CD's and mail them to key-persons, who will distribute them later and make this concert a experience for all of us too remember. I haven't said this will work, and I have not asked Øysten from Bergen who works at Danmarksplass, it's just an idea. A good, one, I'd say.

Hear without tear(s).
