My dear stalemate, this is only the internet. A discussion here is due to fail for misunderstanding by its very nature.
I don’t see the duality there because there is none. And I wrote this all very consciously. I am not defending the band. This is where you start out wrong. I spelled out 2 main points:
1) It’s not the artist’s concern how people want to play their music.
2) Why the heck I should NOT buy a record player to listen to their new and probably great album which is only released on a medium I can’t listen to otherwise? What’s mindlessley religious about this, as you put it? Am I more of a thinker when I whine and bitch about it on the internet? I’m talking about having FUN. A positive attitude. Get me that bloody vinyl player, buy me the album and ENJOY it. If that’s religion, oh Lord please count me in.
Quote:The brand new Motorpsycho vinyl only release is a bit delayed due to the SPECTACULAR DESIGN WORK, but we hope it will be ready for release on 26. June.they really must hate their fans.
Well put, GBD.
And Stalemate, there’s no religious mindless following here. But you’re the one making a fuss.
I didn’t even know about that “buy a record player” pressrelease statement till now. But I like it.
Thinking about this: yes, if I hadn’t a record player and if it was the only way I could ever listen to a new record by my beloved band, why the heck should I NOT get me a record player??? Should I rather bitch about it? Calling those who’d happily buy one a bunch of mindless sheep? Weird.

Quote:Well, then we don’t get each other’s point, and what happens is – chronologically:1. The bands longevity comes from having a supportive fan-base. Known fact.
2. Therefore the band and the fan has a relationship which means music, and good times <–> money and the occasional cheering at concerts. Subjective judgement.
3. The band has it’s birthday, and half of the concertcheerers, half of the moneybringers and other followers, doesn’t “get invited”. fact.
4. Some fans gets pissed off, and writes laconic and sarcastic posts at the bands forum. fact.
5. Some fans, which are “invited”, gets all defensive, and calls other fans dutch and other nasty things. subjective judgement.
6. Hell breaks loose, because some fans hasn’t got the wits to step away from a impossible discussion. fact.
And here we are. Still not agreeing – big surprise!
Yep. But to me agreeing or not is of no importance. People have various opinions, fact.
Basically, your main point is that the fan feeds the artist, so the artist owes the fan. Since I am a fan, a consumer and a musician myself, I can’t relate to such a scheme.
And I really don’t get why people rather waste their energy on discussion boards than on a few bucks for a record player. Especially if the delays hint to a very special musthave vinyl edition from MP.
Quote:@SupernautWell, pretty friggin UNcool since you ask – They don’t recognize that at least half, and probably even more of their fans who has been contributing by being fans, spending money, coming to shows etc, and therefore helped motorpsycho becoming the 20 year old motorpsycho they are today, will not be able to partake in the 20th anniversary. Have they done this on every record, that’d be just fine, but no. Just this one. Wouldn’t you be steamed if they released this one single album on a medium you hadn’t been able to play?
That’s my point.

Well you really don’t get my point. Any band doesn’t owe the fans nothing. You might just as well demand their next few records for free since you bought so much already. This is just stupid. It’s their work, it’s their life, it’s what they do. And you keep on ignoring very stubbornly the simple fact, that maybe they don’t care to think all this far anyway and just release a vinyl only thingy because they feel like it. That’s how they do things. Always have done. That’s why and how we got this beloved music in the first place.
I can’t be steamed if they released this one single album on a medium I wouldn’t be able to play because I own the means to play all the music I like because I didn’t buy one single gadget which I demand all the music has to be released for because I bought it. And this without even having a MP3 player.

Quote:I don’t know why MP put this one out only on vinyl, and i am not that good on speculating. My guess is that it has something to do with it being special, with special artwork, and Steve Albini recording. Albini records only analog, so it might has someting to do with that, true analog. I don’t know. Or they just don’t want people to listen in their car to the new record. I love the experience of putting a new vinyl record on my turntable, hedphones on, eyes closed and just sail on. If that is what MP intended with this one, than i am up for it.yes.. my guess too.

Quote:My band’s latest release was on a floppy disc, and that was just last year. Had that been Motorpsycho, I figure absolutely EVERYBODY would’ve been pissed off to some extent. []
ha! I have a floppy drive, too! I’m safe for everything.

Quote:i’ll tell you why, and it’s simple really. If the artist wants to continue being an artist (e.g having money to spend on things like food and booze, he’s dependant on the art consumer to some extent, unless he wants to live of governmental grants, which again will have dramatic consequences on the amount of especially booze for the artist, and so he’ll have to adapt to, or at least to some extent adapt to how the consumer wants his work delivered.Simple as that.
Yes, simple it is. And pointless and of no concern here. We are talking of ONE SINGLE RELEASE here. Maybe not releasing everything on vinyl only is how MP adapt to the market situation. Ever thought of that? So cut them some slack with this one new album.
I think you still haven’t understood what I was trying to point at. You, I and we don’t have any given “right” to the artist’s art, so there’s nothing to bitch about. If you don’t want to own a record player, that’s your decision. So be it, live with it. I don’t see where your problem is, how you cannot understand the artists choices and decisions. This isn’t about being the perfect fan, for me it’s simply basic common sense. They don’t want you to buy a record player. They probably do it – gasp! – for fun! Because they themselves are album kids, as Bent stated. Cherishing it with one release. Only one. Now. What’s so hard to grasp about this?
Geez, usually people get mad when their cult band go major or something. WAAAH! SELL OUT!!!! Our boys simply hang on to the trip they’re on. Bad luck for our ipods. How cool is that?
Quote:It is fully possible to survive as a musician, don’t let the anti piracy agency tell you otherwise, it’s a matter of how you adapt to the new channels for music distribution, rather than just being such a friggin ludite as our long-haired snÃ¥sakaill and his friends is increasingly resembling. Why? This debate is on for a while now. Why does the artist have to adapt to anything? Why the fuck why? So it’s down to the consumer to dictate the form and distribution of art? What really annoys me is how some folks state this as a given. This sucks so unbelievably big time. As soon as the artist has to adapt to the consumer’s latest gadget, society is royally screwed. And we’re on the fast lane there, because so many folks are too dumb to think for an inch and aren’t even ashamed about it.
In this special case it’s up to MP to release their stuff on vinyl or CD or one download song per month or not at all. And here people probably make too much of it anyway. I guess the band just wants to celebrate vinyl with this one special release.
Geez I hate this self righteous consumers’ rights crap. [insert john cleese fistshaking]
a record player for 500 euros???? where do you live?
and generally, please stop this debate. the band wants a vinly only release, so what? there might be a year when they don’t release anything at all. will we complain about that too?
you’re not making any sense.
Ah a webshop, silly me. But I think this really isn’t up to date. Not even LLM or BHBC to buy. This bag is the old black one I already have. There’s another one on Stickman.
ah TV Eye. MP incorporated it once quite some years ago… Probably in Hogwash.
Ron Asheton forever.
your gallery link seems to be broken…?
