Vedius: yeah, of course the false opening to Feel was intentional, but by fumbling I meant that it really took quite a few songs before this concert went from good, to amazing, fantastic mesmerizing etc. As expected the pop songs (first 6) didn’t work as well as the more experimental and drony songs. So I really was almost gutted from what I heard and what I was feeling. I was really nervous before this concert and 4-5 songs in it seemed like all my fears came true. Then around Now It’s Time to Skate and definitely Watersound everything changed, at least for me, but it seemed like something similiar happened on stage. Geb was on stage playing acoustic guitar and I was transported back to my boy’s room being 15 years old. I’ve seen something like 31-32-33 MP-shows now and Watersound last night is the high point of all those shows.
And the sound, which ruined the Pavment show on thursday was very very good. Loud (but not really loud untill Watersound), yet detailed and crystal clear. Good stereo imaging (this is not common with PAs like this), there was very easy to hear what every individual on stage was playing at all times and (thankfully) no resonances in the bass which has been a problem at the Enga stage.
First 30 minutes: nostalgic and fun
Last hour and a half: MP at their absolute peak with everyone on stage. It doesn’t get any better.
Yeah and this really should get a live release. Everyone should get to hear how much Lars’ piano and especially that extra acoustic guitar (geb) adds to some of these songs.
Motorpsycho hasn’t made me feel this way in ten years. Watersound was orgasmic!
Setlist:
• Feel
• On My Pillow
• Leave It Like That
• A Shrug & A Fistful
• Wearing Yr Smell
• Beautiful Sister
• Now It’s Time To Skate
• Watersound
• Trapdoor
• Kill Some Day
• Giftland
• The Wheel
• Sungravy
• Grindstone
• The Golden Core
A couple of poitns while I remember them:
– Some fumbling in the beginning. They started with Feel with both Bent and Snah on acoustic guitar. Kenneth on mellotron. Watersound through Golden Core was bliss.
– Cd2 was played in the correct order at the end. The order of the songs on cd1 was mixed up.
– For the first couple of songs their playing seemed kind of forced. Probably ’cause they had to stick to the planned sequencing of the songs. But 3-4-5 songs in, it seemed like the band as totally into it.
– The opera(?) sent up fireworks during the end of Grindstone and beginning of Golden Core. Worked well while they were playing Grindstone, kinda disturbing during the first minutes of Golden Core.
– Some exteded jamming during a couple of the cd1 songs.
– The Wheel was 24 – 25 minutes long.
– Hanne Hukkelberg sang on Golden Core.
– Geb played a lot of guitar (banjo on Trapdoor) and seemed to enjoy himself immensely. He played drums (together with Kenneth) on at least Giftland, The Wheel, Grindstone and Golden Core.
– Bent forgot the lyrics on Sungravy.
Really like the boxset, but I expected more unheard material. It’s 4 cds, yet it’s only 8-10 tracks that I don’t already have on vinyl or cd.
Great packaging, nice liner notes and reasonable priced. No reason not to buy this one.
Mastering:
I agree with Bent about modern remasters and (imo) 90% of the time a remaster will end up sounding worse than the original cd-release. Too much compression, limiting and poor eq-choices. I always try to look for original 80’s cd releases rather than 90’s or 00 remasters.
But after listening to CD4 on this boxset, I’m thinking that the original mastering could be improved on. The mastering on CD4 sounds really good! Clearer (like many other modern masters), but not bright and with very little limiting and compression.
A new remaster from the original mastertapes, converted with modern state of the art DA-converters and mastered by someone who cares about mainting the dynamic on the mastertapecould be a real improvement. But as long as the original master has that breath of life and is as dynamic as it is, a remaster of Timothy’s Monster isn’t really necessary. But the point is: judging from the sound on the “new” tracks on this boxset, a Timothy-remaster would sound really good.
Rakvaag in today’s Dagsavisen on the Timothy-box: http://www.dagsavisen.no/kultur/musikk/article498758.ece
According to him, this is the first in a series of “deluxe-editions” of MPs catalogue.
Regarding the Stooges gig: I don’t care about the Raw Power songs. It’s seeing James Williamson and Iggy performing Kill City tunes that makes this reunion/tour so special. Can’t wait!
Speaking of waiting… I’m anxiously checking my mailbox everyday now as well. Anyone got the boxset yet? Rune Grammofon guaranteed that preordering with them would get you the Timothy-box the fastest, so it really should arrive tomorrow.
otherdemon: That’s not the pre-version.
This new box-set should (and definitely will) include different mixes, takes and/or songs.
Has Giftland been played since 95?
