As Supernaut mentioned earlier,. Josh Homme (QOTSA), John Paul Jones (Zeppelin) and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) have been collaborationg on material this year. fter alot of secrecy and some festival gigs, their self titled album is finally avaliable. And damn! What an album! Been listening to it these past few days (while waiting for the fruit and all), and i must say that it sounds amazing! Granted, you better be a QOTSA fan to really enjoy this, as Hommes riffs and vocal melodies run the show here like in that band. But mind you..it’s not QOTSA…it’s so much better, much because of Grohls dynamite drumming, But let’s not forget Jones. His bass playing is also superb. All in all a super album from the next supergroup.
So check it out folks! I urge you to!
November 25, 2009 at 19:06 #15558boring!!!
November 25, 2009 at 19:27 #15559great band, great album!
November 26, 2009 at 07:06 #15560I’d say theres ALOT of Jones in that album! You can hear he had alot of input in Zeppelins music. And he knows how to pick the drummers to play with .
Best song for me is Scumbag Blues.
November 26, 2009 at 08:40 #15561Only had one run but that was pretty disappointing: No surprises at all – but it may grow… hope so, because I bought my ticket to see them live in Cologne long ago
November 26, 2009 at 08:50 #15562don’t give up mosquito (pj-fan?), i thought it was pretty weak the first time i heard it too, but it does grow. i wouldnt put it up next to qotsa myself but i do like it!
November 26, 2009 at 09:02 #15563I´ve only had a couple of listens, sounds cosy, but it didn´t really do anything for me except it made we want to listen to Rated R again.
It more or less like a new qotsa record.
Speaking of supergroups, the Shrinebuilder album is alot better imo, but it was a bit disapointing aswell
November 26, 2009 at 14:55 #15564I only listened to the album on the net and of what I’ve heard I think it’s very great!
Have to get it on vinyl and listen to it more often to get to know the songs better (before seeing them in Munich on Dec 6th!! .
Really I just think I wished the last couple or the new MP record would sound like this. So perfectly balanced between rawness and clarity. Would fit to MPs new style very good.
I’m sorry but oversubtly said COTF sounds like a demo record against this to me. When I saw them in Treviso I stood in the front row and wondered why they don’t get this sound and feeling on tape?!? They did in the past (Trust Us, Blissard, LTEC, Phanerothyme) but the last albums just could’ve sounded way better.
November 26, 2009 at 15:27 #15565For me it grows and grows for every listen. I love Hommes neat riffs combined with Grohls fantastic drumming!
@ once daniel: I know what you mean! I’ve also had some complaints regarding the sound of say LLM and COTF. But i used the last Sonic Youth album (The Eternal) as my comparison. The Vultures album is very well produced. Once can hear every little detail crystal clear. As for LLM, the sound is much raw and muddy, and i sometimes find myself struggling to even catch what they’re singing. COTF was better, but still not great. Far from it!
..but then again….it’s been said that HMF will be the best produced album in awhile, so perhaps they’ve managed to move towards a cleaner sound on this one. Here’s to hope anyway…
November 26, 2009 at 21:41 #15566My impression after two listens: Just another QOTSA record and a fairly mediocre one at that. And it’s 30 minutes too long. They certainly didn’t fulfill the promise of this great line up! Although I kinda dig Josh’s voice I think they need a better singer.
Berlin is sold out by now. There was no way I was gonna pay 50 bucks for this anyway (even without knowing the album) but the chance for cheap black market tickets is pretty high now. I think I’m gonna try to score one for 20€ because after all I would love to see them live…

November 26, 2009 at 21:56 #15568Heh…seems we’re abit divided in terms of what we think of it. I can easily relate to the qotsa comparison, but then again i love them, so that’s all ok! Plus if this was a qotsa album, it’d be a damn good one if you ask me! So many catchy riffs in it. It just makes me smile!
November 26, 2009 at 22:00 #15569I have hopes because the second run (in a rather “angry” mood [] was already better today! It will be more impressive live I am sure… though the fastest drummer from Norway sets the level high in small venues ;p
@Alex: I keep my fingers Xed for you, but a “sold out” doesn’t really support your plans I’m afraid
November 26, 2009 at 22:38 #15570Sold out in Berlin usually means there are a lot of black market sellers all over the place and once the show starts their prices radically drop to levels below face value. I have previously been lucky a few times this way, getting into high profile shows for 50% of face value. If the demand is too high though this obviously won’t work…

November 27, 2009 at 01:26 #15571@ GBD: The only song that fits the sound pretty good is The Alchemyst in my opinion. One of their best ever!
I mentioned that sometime earlier but yes I also don’t like how they captured the singing on the last albums either. Too much fx and it sounds like 10 vocal-tracks at the same time which totally lacks in clarity. Singing it in tune in the first place would probably help…
It seems Snah really makes an effort to sing these days but Bent only when “he’s in the mood”. He may just not care about it but sometimes it’s sad since he does have a good voice and could bring it more in the front.
However I’m really looking forward to heavy metal fruit! Everything may be different with this album as far as recording goes!
November 27, 2009 at 13:01 #15572So let this be the TCV topic. I haven’t heard the new album yet, but got my ticket for the Köln gig. It’s John Paul Jones dammit! Must see him once in my life. But does he only play bass? No string arrangements, mandolins, mellotrons, distorted slide basses? Why get Jonesy if you don’t get the full of him?
I’m sure it’s a grower, as every great album is.
