And I found the first flaw
On the CD edition (Rune)(it's the modern kind where you can see the song titles in the display) they have managed to mix up the titles of song 2 and 3 on the first CD. And to make sure they have even misspelled "Though the weill".
The collectors value of this first edition just quadrupled I guess it doesn't hurt that it is also signed.
February 10, 2012 at 17:39 #21270Mutiny is favorite song so far, definitively. That bass, love it.
February 10, 2012 at 17:47 #21271Just listened to the first half. Favorite track so far? 'Into the Gyre'. The first three minutes or so are just gorgeous, the middle section reminds me a bit of classic era Rush, then there's the frantic Snah guitar workout. Great stuff.
February 10, 2012 at 18:10 #21272Part way through part two. Not so sure about 'La Lethe'. Bit over long and serves no real purpose as an audio exercise – perhaps would work as the soundtrack to something visual. The tenor solo is nice.
February 10, 2012 at 18:18 #21273A strange fact: I haven't found any memorable melody yet. 2nd listen now and I still can't remember one single hook or chorus but that's absolutely ok. The music just ebbs and flows in waves.
The production is somewhat strange, no? A hollow sound of sorts, nothing is really in yr face. Everything swirls somewhere around each other instrument. Sometimes I wish drums and bass were more present. Then again, nothing fights or obscures nothing else, it's one big booomy wall of sound.
Oh cool, the last song just ended while typing and in my CD-changer The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway started. And it fits just fine.
February 10, 2012 at 18:23 #21274yeah. It is like an overall soundtrack, as opposed to a bunch of catchy rock songs.
Definitely to be listened to as a whole, rather than dipping in and out of.
(Just finished 'Sharks' – great track!)
February 10, 2012 at 18:36 #21275None of the songs have a standard verse/chorus/middle 8/verse/chorus structure. They are various musical sections which follow on from, and often contrast from each other. That's probably why nothing is too catchy or memorable on first listen.
A really strong finish with 'Mutiny' and 'Into the Mystic'. I feel like I've been swimming across a river. Some calm bits, some eddies and rapids, but overall I've been rather swept away. Think I'll have to jump in and swim it again.
February 10, 2012 at 18:46 #21276That's a nice and fitting metaphor. Some parts of it were hard to get through. But I agree with supernaut on the not so memorable melodies (although that has already been my experience with the three previous records…)
February 10, 2012 at 18:52 #21277I'm not missing any memorable parts as a complaint. I just wanted to state that don't find any. And I don't think it would need a verse/chorus structure to provide these hooks. On LLM I found lots of instant hooks and singalong stuff there right away. This oeuvre here just works differently. I'm very sure it's also only a matter of multiple listens until I can sing that part of that song on the bus.
And it's over very quickly. It feels like a normal 40min album to me. 8O
February 10, 2012 at 20:54 #21278Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, from what I know about the Turkish postman, I'll have to wait for another couple of weeks! Crap. Reading you reactions make the tension unbearable! I'm about to listen to it online although that just won't be the same… Also, I really envy you guys for being able to attend this spring's tour! I'm actually thinking about taking a day off and flying to Germany for just one night…
February 10, 2012 at 21:11 #21279Hey Great King Rat. You should visit the Desertfest in Berlin and stay for more then one night. In Berlin there's a lot to see aspecially in spring…
February 10, 2012 at 21:16 #21280The melody line to the hollow lands/into the mystic is stuck well in my head… I keep repeating the phrase; "told me a cabin boy i'd be, sold me the slops, shipped me to sea
made a sailor out of me"
Great album! Just so great!!!
February 10, 2012 at 21:37 #21281Bent really is a great bass player. So underated. Just listen to his playing in 'The Hollow Lands'.
February 10, 2012 at 22:10 #21282How about the way Into The Mystic ends?
Although I hate these memories so
I'll take them with me when I go
Staring death in the face
Deep into the mystic I gaze
Followed by a really beautiful finale, worthy of a prog-epic.
Gotta love the King Crimson lyrical reference in Into The Gyre, too! And the Starhammer intro re-visited!
February 11, 2012 at 01:22 #21283ok, after i cut my finger instead of the bread and after a visit at the hospital i was finally able to listen to the album…
and……i dont´know. i´m confused. the sound is great but i think would prefer more songs like "mutinty" or "into the mystic".
but i have to listen to the unicorn for the next weeks. i hope it will grow…!
