Still a bit fresh, but heres a few thoughts. I´m neither that blown away or turned off as some are. Again, as with most MP albums, leaving out a few songs out wouldn´t hurt.
LP1 is borderline fantastic. Rockin´and jazzy, very nice.
The hollow lands and Through the veil are really stand-out tracks.
BUT, there´s also lots of mediocre filler. Yes, I´m talking to you side 4:
Sharks is ok- (could be a love cult outtake)
Mutiny are downright crap imo.
Into the mystic is ok+, and wouldn´t be out of place on phynerothyme.
Its like "let them eat barracuda lovecultthyme" filtered trough prog hell.
So a bit of a return to the dark ages there…
Side C defenitly needs more time to fully digest.
It´s a bit over the top for my taste maybe.
Oh, protues I think I might like better if it was instrumental.
As someone else mentioned, it sometimes feels like a musical (this is bad) and some of these progmelodies are not my cup of tea.
Time will tell if it will grow or blow.
February 13, 2012 at 13:42 #21300According to Norwegian record shop Tiger, the Unicorn is sold out from Rune Grammofon (!)
February 13, 2012 at 14:12 #21301Well, i can't find it anywhere on their site. That would be quick!
February 13, 2012 at 15:45 #21302February 13, 2012 at 15:46 #21303"Zusätzlich zum aktuellen Band-Schlagzeuger Kjell Runar “Killer†Jenssen"….
February 13, 2012 at 16:30 #21304I ordered this from Stickman a while ago… Still haven't received it, so I drove down to the recordshop and bought it from them today. If/when I get it from S-man I guess I'll just give it to someone… Smart business move!
I must confess I was a bit afraid I wasn't going to like it too much. Since Kenneth arrived the machine, I think Motorpsycho have been impressive, but haven't moved my feelings like they used to. After reading about the Unicorn, and have listened to the samples on Amazon, I really though this were going to suck.
After a few rounds, I am really impressed! Yes I really like this album a lot! I know I will play this a lot the next weeks, but will I love it as much in ten-fiften years like I still do with the Gebhardt era? Only time (and my potential change of music taste) will tell, but I think not. I played LLM & HMF a lot when they were fresh, but not so much nowadays. On the other hand, I played IaLC & Phanero a lot the first weeks, then not for years – love them now.
Still, the unicorn is a really great album, and I'm looking forward to Sentrum Scene (but I really hope they'll play other stuff too) and I'm absolutely thrilled about the opera show.
February 13, 2012 at 16:58 #21305my copy hasn't arrived yet, too…as the last three times when i pre-ordered mp albums from stickman on the first possible day…maybe next time i order it from amazon or something…
February 13, 2012 at 18:22 #21306New review in NRK Lydverket (norwegian)

February 13, 2012 at 18:31 #21307Haha, I really love the headline of that review: "Seasick unicorn with a reefer behind its ear."
Actually, one of the better reviews I've read of the Unicorn. Not necessarily because of the grade, but because of what the writer actually wrote.
February 13, 2012 at 18:32 #21308Listened quite a few times now and I keep getting drawn back to Hollow Lands, Through The Veil, Into the Gyre and Into the Mystic. They seem to be establishing themselves as my faves at the moment. I must confess, I skip past one or two as well.
February 13, 2012 at 22:01 #21309I got my Unicorn today — and I like it. Interestingly it made me want to listen to Heavy Metal Fruit… weird. Anyway, I think it's not as far-out or jazzy as some make it out to be. Its a logical continuation to their oeuvre, I think. And same as the other Kapstad-era-albums, it will need a few more spins – and thats good.
February 13, 2012 at 22:12 #21310It's beginning to sound like bliss Really loving it!

Sculls In Limbo and Flotsam are essential and works really great in their context.
February 14, 2012 at 01:51 #21312what a fantastic album! every time you think you have a handle on MP they change their skin. While the album is most certainly an MP album, there are new colours and new textures, same, same but different…and with album art by Thore Hansen (Norway's answer to Roger Dean) how can you go wrong!?
I am so glad that these guys do what they do!
Cheers
