Packing my bags as I type! I'll be that guy with the glasses, the beard, no hair and a big smile on my face if anyone wants to say hi! Will try to have the setlist up not long after the show, I know I would have wanted that if I were at home wondering..

Just hope it doesn't look like this:

          – London Calling

          On 07.00pm, off 11.15pm

          hah!

Well, saw the Vienna philharmonic performing Beethoven's fourth and fifth symphonies in Théatre des Champs-Elysées yesterday, which was really cool. Got free a free ticket from a guy at work, so I saved about 160 euros :P However, I would much rather be surrounded by "guys (and gals) with glasses, beard (the gals as well), no hair and a big smile" than old women with purple hair and fur coats… Have LOTS of fun and post reports as soon as possible! All my motorpsychodelic love,

Wish you all a good show – must be great to see them in London! Looking forward to read (hear?!) what was going on with the motorpsychophant ;-)

Seems Snah has shaved off the beard. :-/

But what about the gig? Guys?

              #17799

It was good, but I'm not sure what the point of it was.

If you haven't played a UK gig in years, I can think of 3 reasons you might decide to:

              1) Get a bunch of new fans – playing a bunch of 15 minute suites that all use the 'Loud–quiet–Snah solo–loud' template and then finishing your gig precisely at the 90-minute mark without an encore isn't likely to win any fans

              2) Reward the fans who haven't had the chance to see you live in that time – yeah, no encore is a pretty poor reward. And seriously, with the back catalogue MP have got, it would have killed them to play a couple of 4 minute rockers?

              3) Contractual obligation – someone said MP got funding for the gig. It certainly looked like they enjoyed themselves, but again, finishing bang on 90 minutes and walking off looks like a case of "OK, we said we'd play for an hour and a half, we have, let's go".

Like I said at the start, it was a good gig. But Motorpsycho are better than 'good' and if they're going to play more gigs in the UK in future, it'd be better if there's an obvious reason why.

The Borderline has appearantly a 10:30 curfew, and MP stopped playing at … 10:30. I think you can blame the Brits in this case. And as far as winning new fans, well, they got MP as they are. Take it or leave it. Those present at the gig certainly seemed to enjoy it thoroughly. (Including myself)

They are not doing this to please YOU! This should be pretty obvious for anyone who has been following MP for some time. Either you are up for the ride, or you aren't. It should also be obvious to even the most casual observer that the band does not care anymore about promotion strategies. I guess there was a strict curfew? Maybe that prevented them from playing an encore. Or the people didn't make enough noise. However, playing 15 min suites sounds just fine to me :-)

Can you provide us with a setlist as well as details to the show? Would love to learn more…

                Thanks! :-)

Halitosis, how you can possibly complain when the band plays such a groovy set? :-)

                  #17803

Like I said, it was a good show.

I didn't know about the curfew (and a 10:30 curfew is pretty stupid, actually), but I stand by my point that I couldn't really see the point of the show as they did it. (Which isn't to say I expect them to please me, I just thought their choice of songs was odd considering it's been so long since they did a UK show.)

I still cannot see your point. They did four songs from the three most recent albums (two from the latest) which is fair enough and quite natural because UK fans hadn't had the chance to hear that material yet. Then they did the staples "All is loneliness" and "Hogwash" that should please even the most casual fan PLUS two new songs which they debuted that night. Sounds pretty well balanced to me, giving a good picture what the band is up to RIGHT NOW.

I, too, am not quite sure what you mean by "the point of the show"… Why would you have considered a show with "a couple of 4 minute rockers" more suitable for the first UK gig in a long time? Certainly they don't play shows for a certain purpose (other than simply playing a great set), and if they choose to play some short rockers – fine! If they don't then they probably just didn't feel like it – fine, too! I don't think they sit together before a show and think about what songs might – for whatever reasons! I can't think of any logic ones, really – be suitable for what kind of audience. At least i hope so… :-)
