Just back from Molde Jazz festival. It was a fantastic festival with a lot of very good concerts and a unique atmosphere. Rune Grammofon was lable in residance and besides Motorpsycho there were also concerts from Puma and Bushmans Revenge which are on the same lable.
The Motorpsycho gig took place at the outdoor venue Romsdalsmuseum. Sula Art Esemble played first in front of nearly 3000 people. Trondheim Jazzorkester, Trondheimsolistene and Motorpsycho enetered stage around 20.00. Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent) who wrote and arranged the music was located in the middle of the stage conducting and playing keybords and organ. The Jazz Orkesters (8 people) horn section was massive and the Trondheimsolistene added 6 violins, celli etc. Snah and Bent were located in the back to the right and somehow it`s true what the local newspaper wrote about the concert. The looked like Waldorf & Statler from the Muppet Show being not realy part of the band but having an extreme good time together. Kenneth did an amazing job and kept the different parts together. Ola Kvernberg (violin solist) was actualy the most surprising performer of the concert. Whenever he and Snah (both of them seemed to enjoy playing together to the maxx!)got rockin the sound was fabolous and reminded me of Sugar Cane Harris (Zappa-Hot Rats) or Mahavishnu Orchestra. These were clearly the highlights of the concerts and I hope they will do collaborate together in the future!!! For the rest Bent seemed a bit halv-envolved. His rock-bass concept of playing did not always fit with the music and I was more longing for an upright bass. It was a shame that Snahs guitar sound was not high eneough and he did not had so many solo-parts either, instead there were long trombone or sax soli. The rythmical structure was very JagaJazzist like and builded up the energy for Motorpsycho to step in. Snahs guitar sound disapeared under the massive sound of the horn section. During the last track of the show he finally had the chance to let it loose and I huess that was the closest to a regular Motorpsycho tune.
So overall a fantastic experience which points another time into another direction in the development of Motorpsycho and shows clearly how much potential this band has.
Norway has such a overlfow of excellent musicians and if you never had the chance to hear Bushmans Revenge, I highly reccomend it. The concert (Motorpsycho were present in the audiance) was just fucking amazing and for me one of the best rock concerts ever! So now we hope for a norwegian fall tour and Ola Kvernberg as a member of the Motorpsycho Quartet! Love Kumar
July 26, 2010 at 15:00 #17966Thanks so much for the extensive notes about the show! Greatly appreciated! I would have loved to be there! The Norwegians might not get the best MP shows but they sure get all the exclusive side project appearances and one-off collaborations! I would certainly strive to attend them all if I lived in Trondheim or Oslo!
Thanks again!
