@supernaut: I get your point, and think you’re right about it. I’m thinking quite similar actually; but my approach is a bit different, however in no way opposed to it (at least this is my perception): I used to browse the shops a lot, I bought a lot of CDs, I got inspired a lot, started my own band and wrote tons of songs. Some of them were pretty good I think (but I’m not to judge I guess).

However, at some point in time, the shops here started deteriorating, minimizing CD sections (LPs are present only *very* occassionaly) and therefore it became a lot harder to get hold of stuff I liked (btw, I got no problems buying stuff with only a couple of ‘good’ tracks on it, I have the half of Bjorks discography and I don’t particularly like her). Usually I’d listen to the records beforehand and buy them based on quite a low “liking”-threshold; for instance, I bought a record by the Icelandic band “Leaves” based on the first track only.

This has now changed, as I usually download stuff as a means of pre-listening and then order the CDs online. And THEN I digitalize it and organize my music this way. My opinion is that it is the right of the costumer to deal with this the way he or she wants – this must not be the artists concern.

I do not like iTunes or similar networks btw; I like music on a physical medium. If I own the CD, then I have the feeling I have the original.

More later, gotta get back to work. But I guess we can see eye on eye on this ;)

        We do, jtr.

Yes I’m lucky to have a couple of brilliant vinyl shops in my hometown, so it’s probably easy for me to rant. But I also order some stuff online, CD’s and vinyl. Which is bad actually, I should support those shops more…

The most modern gadget I have is a Nintendo DSi, which plays music from SD cards. So I had to get itunes because of the DSi’s format requirement. All this to have music to listen to on a plane but it was way too loud in there. Bah. Went to Hamburg, awesome place btw.

something is really weird with this forum.. I’ll try again:

We used to have a really well sorted record shop in town, but the person who ran the CD section died 3 years ago and his followers were not quite a replacement, even if they were very nice people. However there is still a considerably large Motorpsycho section there, thanks to my constantig ranting “order more MP, order much more MP, you need more MP” (sadly the quantity of their CDs in that shop hasn’t changed since a couple of years – so no MP listeners in this town I guess).

Hamburg is a pretty great place, yes. I’d consider moving there if the cityscape altogether would attract me more — and if they’d have some hills here, I don’t like flat, I live in the alps ;)

I do have an ipod, btw (a couple years old now, and starts erroring around a bit), but I don’t use itunes; since Rhythmbox (Linux music player) handles mobile music devices just fine.

And my band is Ruhestörung: http://www.ruhestoerung.eu (streaming songs on the myspace-site, free downloads of some albums via lastfm, link is there on the site somewhere). Sadly my brother has expressed he wished no longer to be part of the band, which effectively ended it. When I get my kicks in music again (I hope so), I’ll see if I can either start another band or just record solo.

Since this is off-topic, I would like to alert you all to the newly announced concerts for My Bloody Valentine (not to be confused with My Dying Bride or Bullet For My Valentine ;-)). They will be playing some festivals and one single clubdate: in De Effenaar in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Presale started last saturday.

              See: http://www.mybloodyvalentine.co.uk/

              Greets,

he also recorded parts of the new Manic Street Preachers record and that one is great too. (but the parts of the album recorded by their long-term-collaborateur dave eringa are just as good, so whatever ;) )

                  OT:

For anyone in or around Utrecht (NL) tomorrow evening (tuesday 2 june), run don’t walk to Ekko for Marissa Nadler. Just got back from seeing her at the Paradiso. Incredible. Criminally low attendance due to it being an early show, a holiday here and balmy weather but the 40 or so of us there were treated to an incredible two-part reverie, first acoustic, then electric. Go!
