    What really happened with all the versions and reissues over the last years? I have collected Motorpsycho since the late 90s, and is fairly complete up until 2010 or so. But the last few years, with the all-kinds-of-colored vinyls and repressings, a lot of the fun is gone. It feels most of all as a way to sell more records (of course it is).

    Any views on this? Do you just collect 1st pressings, or are you trying to be as complete as possible?

      Well, you have to remember that artists/bands anno 2013 don't really sell records. So the fact that MP are churning out more limited exclusive stuff to make the collectors salivate, probably is to compensate for the loss in other areas. So they can have funds for new recordings.

      But I do agree that since they signed with Rune Grammofon, they went slightly overkill with all those countless limited editions of their releases. And I sure understand that it takes away the fun, knowing that your collection will never be complete. But if people feel like they are paying for more than just a regular old record, then it's easier for the buyers "on the brink" to purchase a record if they get lavish cover art, freaky vinyl colors, limited edition posters etc. It's basically a feinschmecker option.

      And there were times in the 90s when collecting MP was hard (4 different editions of AADAP, anyone?), so it's not exactly a new thing.

        Aren't limited editions the thrilling holy grail for collectors?

        MP aren't in their twenties anymore. They must make a sustainable living now for themselves and their families. I think that's more important than the collector's funtime.

        Good points there, but:

        – The limited edition versions do not seem so exclusive when all releases are limited.

        – I believe that a lot of the limited editions are sold to collectors. If the collectors get tired of all the editions there is a good chance they will stop buying them. In that case, the band have ruined their own market.

          Huh…rambling about TOO MANY limited editions…that's hilarious!

          Stop whining about holes in your collection, and continue to support your favourite band instead….that's my 5 cents.!

          I´m not whining about holes in my collection, and that´s the problem. A few years ago I would have done all I could to get a copy of every release, but it´ less and less important to me = I´ll buy fewer records than I did.

          But hey, if I´m the only one who feels this way, the band is probably doing everything right :)

          I kind of feel the same way, my own Motorpsycho collection was also fairly complete up to the last few years after signing to Rune, too many editions that are basically the same except different colours on the vinyl, and I also share the feeling that I don't care as much as before if my collection is complete or not, which is kind of sad..

          Would feel better about spending the extra cash if there was a new song or two in there.

          I get the points about them having to find ways to earn enough to keep doing what they do though, my economy these days simply can't keep up with all the releases.

            Being an avid collector of live music in all formats (vinyl, CD, CD-R, digital) I could see myself spending a considerable amount of money for FLAC/mp3 downloads of MP concerts. I think I could not resist to purchase at least one show a week or similiar which would equate maybe 30-50€ a month.

            Good point! At least that brings something new to the table. Pearl Jam did that for a long period (maybe they still do?). The band made the money instead of the bootleggers, and at the same time ensured that the sound quality was good enough. Win win.

              Livedownloads.com could provide that service. This idea is not too far-fetched. The band just needs to decide for it.

                I feel as if the boys have been noticing quite well what ways usually work out for other bands and always decided to go other paths just for the hell of it. They seem to have a very jazz attitude. For example a concert is a concert and it happened at some point in space and time and then it's over and gone. Always onward to and around the next corner.

                Also, isn't Serpentine still the last videoclip they've done?

                  The "Limited edition" thing seems rather easy nowadays. The production cost is more or less the same whichever colour you choose and you order a given number of copies anyway. Presto: a limited edition. Spend a couple of hours hand numbering the copies and you are really exclusive.

                  Adding special tracks would be much more expensive (and I would be pissed off for being forced to buy a special edition just to get one additional track).

                  That said, I do miss the occasional single or ep.

                  As for a concert download shop (see dgmlive.com for a complete collection of King Crimson concerts, and quite a few rehearsals) Bent has said earlier that they sit on several hundred and fifty hours of concert recordings waiting to be released, so I don't think they are doing just play and forget.

                  But running a download shop for concert recordings would require some effort put into it, which I suspect they rather spend on forward looking projects. We do get this stream of deluxe editions of the old albums though.
