Hi,
now hanging on to the trip I´m on since more than 30 years. Time for me to celebrate Timothy´s monster by doing a cover.
In fact, I think Timothy´s monster was one of the main reasons that led me to pick up a guitar. I couldn´t understand any of the magic at that time and now only 30 years later, i begin to understand, what they did.
Hopefully you don´t think it is blasphemie, but anyway, hope you enjoy:

October 22, 2025 at 20:14 #44880Very respectable! I think I prefer it to quite a few covers on those compilations!
Can you please tell me what synth you have there?
October 23, 2025 at 11:42 #44884I tried a lot of Mellotron synth but finally choose the vintage instrument from Kontakt.
October 23, 2025 at 13:05 #44885Good job! And you really nailed the false start ; )
October 23, 2025 at 13:43 #44886Yeah, couldn’t think of a cover without that start. 😂
October 23, 2025 at 20:18 #44888I’m just at the beginning of my investigations into the world of synths, so forgive what is probably a dim question, but would the keyboard (synth) in the video be something other than the vintage Kontakt Mellotron of which you speak?
I’m looking at various ways of getting song ideas down quickly, building parts and layers, without any computer involvement – going DAWless, basically. I definitely want a synth element but I am considering making it the central item – maybe in the form of a suitable, portable, standalone, polyphonic workstation that has song mode, good drums, proper keys and a million other ‘would likes’ such as being able to get nice Mellotron sounds. The Akai MPC 37 Keys appealed until I realised how much internet connectivity was involved, how many bugs and glitches there are and how the firmware updates keep messing things up (e.g., since the last update, you are now restricted to 4/4 time only). I don’t need that stress! Any suggestions for alternatives would be gratefully received!
October 23, 2025 at 20:25 #44889I really like the Feel cover, well done!
October 23, 2025 at 21:03 #44890Not sure if I understand your question right. You mean the physical keyboard that I play in the video? That is a novation launch key mini mk3 which is just a midi keyboard without any build in sound generator. It sends midi to a computer / daw with Native Instruments Kontakt as a virtual instrument (VST). Any other virtual instrument will do. There a lot of other virtual mellotron VST instruments, some good ones even for free (redtron).
I’ve seen that there is a new hardware mellotron sound expander which can be played without computer with any keyboard that has midi out.

You could combine this with any keyboard workstation and get decent mellotron sounds.
My setup is a computer setup with Studio One as a daw. I don’t know much about workstations and doing arrangements and song sketches with them.
October 23, 2025 at 21:08 #44891Thank you. Wanted to do this cover for a very long time. I am quite happy about the result and other Motorpsycho fans liking it means a lot to me.
October 23, 2025 at 22:12 #44892Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to explain. That makes it clearer for me now. That hardware Mellotron sound expander could be a good lead to follow.
Frankly, my head is spinning right now with all the choices and variables out there. At the moment, I am edging towards something like a Roland FA-06 or a Korg Krome EX, but ask me tomorrow and I might be looking at something else entirely!
Anyway, I’ll leave you in peace to work on your next cover. How about Watersound?
October 23, 2025 at 23:02 #44893Good idea. I play Watersound on acoustic guitar from time to time. I like the tuning. If I do Watersound it will become probably a medley with Sungravy. Both songs share the same tuning. I always play them together.
In the meantime have a listen to an older cover of mad sun.
