If you still feel that there is something left that hasn’t been said or written about COTF being vinyl only -please go ahead…

    I Love Vinyl

    #13449

Honestly, at first I was thinking ‘Oh, no vinyl only! Damn, what can I do?’ That is if you don’t own a record player of course, just like me.

    Until now…

    Guess what happened?

Was talking to a record company guy a few months ago…. He told me that within the next 2 or 3 years CD’s would dissapear!

New music will only be released on vinyl or on the net. If you want music digitally, you’ll have to download it, (or some put MP 3 download coupons with their vinyl reissues) and to make yourself comfortable, buy an MP3 player, beit an I-pod or something like that… Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got an 80GB Ipod and I adore just the fact to have 800 CD’s on it and still having space left! Makes wandering around in the city much more fun!

So record companies are only doing digital releases on the internet and if you really want to buy the album with the cover art etc., you’d have to buy the vinyl. Vinyls will also get cheaper by then. Nowadays you pay around 20 euro’s for the vinyl version, where a CD costs around 12?

But anyway, since I got the news that MP did a vinyl only release, I decided to buy a record player again. I did still have some vinyls left somewhere in the house, so maybe it would be nice to give these a listen again? And I couldn’t stand the fact not having the new MP album since I love this band. Maybe I should’ve taped it from a friend like back in the days?

Of course this brought back a lot of memories! And since I enjoyed it this much, I decided to buy the albums I liked the most in my collection (the ones I already have on CD) and new releases on vinyl, if I could find them….

Aha, a new hobby? Living in the centre of Brussels made it easy, a lot of 2nd hand stores stuffed with vinyl…

So I did a bit of shopping and already noticed that a lot of great stuff from the past is being reissued on vinyl. Has it always been like that? Or is it me that is noticing all this since I started looking for vinyls?

At first i thought it was a really really oldskool kind of thing to only listen to records instead of CD’s… and now I can’t stop doing it myself?!

The sound of vinyl is remarkably better than a CD. And I’m pretty sure everybody can hear the difference!

Especially in the low end… and it sounds more ‘open’ too!

But I really don’t wanna start a discussion around this topic.

If you’re happy listening to CD’s and MP 3’s, I’m happy for you!

I wish I could listen to that too without noticing that the sound isn’t really that good and a bit dull

I forgot this myself, (they started releasing CDs when I was a 10 year old?) if I couldn’t compare directly

But for now it’s vinyl only at home! For the rest of my days on earth!!!

I’ve spent way too much money on buying vinyls this last month, but had so much fun looking around in record stores.

Is this a midlife crisis? No, I’m only 34, a bit early for that no?

Actually I’d like to thank Motorpsycho a lot for doing the vinyl only release!

Really got me into listening to music again!

And it still keeps sounding better!

So my advise on this :

If you really like music and you dont own a record player, get one!!!!! I’m sure it would make you happier…

And if you have one already, I envy you ;-)

@jubalong : I second that with great pleasure

and if people are starting discussions on the digi release of COTF, I only have one answer

It’s the artist’s choice! And I also want to stress out that I adore the idea that they’re doing themselves and their

fans a big pleasure on their 20th anniversarry by recording @ Electrical Audio with Albini. It’s one big picture I think :

    Albini, vinyl, 20th anniversary…

If you don’t get the big picture, maybe you’re not into music enough? If you are, you’d buy yourself or steal a record player and not start whining about a digital release…

    It’s only my opinion

    feel free to shout!

PS : last week I’ve noticed that there’s a reissue from ‘In the court of the Crimson King’,

I did’nt buy it because I already own the original ;-)

but I tought it was funny because I know it’s one of MP’s favorite albums

and it’s released on vinyl again the same week COTF was released

    a coincidence?

i have ordered the vinyl and looking forward to hear this album. I don’t think the reason for this vinyl release is made out of pure sound issues. I’ve seen in some post that buy a record player. Don’t get my wrong, i love to listen to my vinyl when i am in my living room. but if some people have a decent cd player and buy a cheap record player and think vinyl is better… sorry, but i can’t see that happening.

So see this record as a celebration of all the great years with Motorpsycho and nothing else.

about the digital world; i’ve started to buy vinyl lately again because a lot of the bands I like give you a link or a coupon when you buy the vinyl. i have bought cd’s since it has been moore important for me to be able to bring the music in my car, garden, boat, office etc… I know Wilco are a much bigger band than MP, but see how they are using the new age of music industry. when i’ve got their latest album I also got the cd so i can covert it to mp3, flac, apple looseless or whatever i want so i can listen to the music when i walk, run, drive my car or travel with a boat or whatever. Wilco also released som dvd when you put in the dvd you can download the songs in mp3 format so you can listen to the music whenever you want. so i really hope for the next normal release for Motorpsycho they will think of this stuff. Make a limited package with vinyl and digital format and put in a t-shirt or some other stuff, so many of their fans are big fans so they will have no problem getting in some extra money. if you pre-order this package you get some video/sound from a demo of one of the songs or maybe a song that didn’t make it to the final record.

hope this is possible in the future. I know i will pre-order.

Great Story gerd, and: Welcome to the “club” of vinyl lovers :P

Having a vinyl in your hand and on your player is such a different thing indeed, the record being complemented with a dl code is to me the perfect deal for the future (and present ;).

I don’t think CDs will disappear that fast, but for sure within the next 5 or so years.

It’s already now that many bands/artists/companies focus on special editions and boxes.

Blue-Ray might be the big thing since it has the great sound plus open digital aspect- but long lives the vinyl!!

And prices going down by more albums being pressed/released is music in my ears :D

One thing: Never steal records or a player from private people, there is so much love in that…!

      #13452

I’m searching for a Mp3 version of “Child of the future”…

I’ve my record player since 400 km, and I can’t take it till September…

I’ve my original copy, and I want to listen to it.

For me, It’s a good idea the only vinyl version, but It’s a bad idea don’t put It also in Mp3 version for the COTF buyer.

      sorry MP.

      See you in Velvet.

      #13453

I quote my post from the COTF-thread because it fits here:

Production and Vinyl of “child of the future”?

“Good. But not there where Sonic Youth already is with the last release “The Eternal” on 180 gr. – vinyl. My LP has some noises that shouldn’t be there, and is not quiet where it should be, played as I got it and even after proper cleaning. Just bad luck? My Equipment is definitly not the problem. I am owning a Mission Cyrus Amp and a Thorens recordplayer …

If you make a Vinyl only release, than it should be a good one concerning the quality of sound and soundcarrier (vinyl). I give you 6/10 for the audio quality of my copy, sorry (Sonic Youth “The Eternal” being the perfect 10).

Apart of that I like the production and the mix, Bents thick bass really carrying the whole thing. Great groove, bass and drums work very well together, good solos and vocals from Ryan.

Congratulation, nice work guys. Sonic Youth and you, you’re my all time favourites and you’re creating a great gap to the rest of it actually …

      CU live.”

I would add: Ok, they recorded COTF in only 4 days apparently, they have small budget and label and I think they like to record it “one take” / nearly live – so we have to consider that also. But the soundcarrier the vinyl could be better I still think.

For all you vinyl lovers out there :

Jesus Lizard will release a remastered version of their first 4 albums, which are great!

Remastering is done by Steve Albini (they still are his favorite band I guess, and they are touring again!)

Released with a download coupon at the end of september 09…

Read all about it here :

I think this is fitting. When they started up and Lobotomizer was released, it was only on vinyl. So why not just on vinyl… hell I would have a settled for a tape only release  Go MP!!

            #13458

Getting back to vinyl also got me into reading about recording techniques and the history of recording…

I’m about to finish ‘Perfecting Sound Forever : the story of recorded music” written by Greg Milner

Maybe for audiophiles, vinyl lovers, musicians and sound engineers… or a combination, like me ;-)

There are qoutes from Abbey Road, Electrical Audio (Albini), Power Station, The Townhouse,… invention of stereo, vinyl, CD, magnetic tape…. Loudness Wars… excellent reading if you’re into this stuff! Or if you wanna know more about it. What is perfect sound? What are we all looking for?

Found out about a guy named John Diamond who protested heavily and gave readings back in 79 and 80 when the Compact Disc was pushed into the market. He didn’t win the war against Sony/Philips, but found this article on the net :

            http://www.geocities.com/udauda@sbcglobal.net/Digital_Stress.html

So that’s why we prefer vinyl ladies and gentlemen ;-)

Listening to Oren Ambarchi ‘In the Pendulum’s Embrace’ out on Southern Lord Records.

Soundscape like album, pure analog low end with some guitars, bells,…

He’s also responsable for a few soundscapy stuff on some Sunn O))) releases

also very very slow and relaxing, almost healing (like Sunn O))) of course)

If you’re into ambient or something like Bohren & der Club of Gore, I’m sure you’ll love to hear this (on vinyl)

A friend of mine is a sound therapist and she fell in love with this immediately and wanted me to give her the record!!!

            Aaaargh, women and music ;-)

            #13459

Well, been looking around the net, but I can

            f

            ve heard earlier (somewhere)that it

            b

s an Limited edition, and I

            s in norwegian though….

I`m still wondering how many copies there are printed exactily? Is it limited? Really would like to know.

            #13460

My latest post here seems to to have been messed up. Anyway,.. The question is: Does anyone know how many copies were printed of this album?

I remember the time (late 80s and following years) when i couldn’t listen to some albums because they were only availible on CD. No vinyl available. Vinyl was nearly dead. I refused to buy a CD-player. But i was forced to buy one, because i wanted to listen to music i like. Ha, COTF, Motorpsycho’s sweet little revenge;o)
