I do believe Dark Side of the Moon was voted “best album to make love to” at some point, so the music/sex connection is nothing new. :P

      Interesting topic!

I toyed with the idea of making a “highlights reel” cd or two of MP-stuff myself a couple of years ago, and managed to whittle it down to two rock-solid discs: The first as a pure best of-pop/rock oriented hitfest, and disc two with wild trippy, out-there stuff. :P I compiled both of them before LLM, so nothing from the last three:

The ‘pop’ disc: Nothing to Say, Kill Some Day, Babylon (Tussler), Nerve Tattoo, Walking on the Water, Starmelt/Lovelight, In the Family, Hey Jane, Ozone, High Time, For Free, Neverland, Serpentine, Composite Head, No Evil, Hyena, Sail On.

The ‘space’ disc: The Wheel, Plan #1, STG, Heartattack Mac, Un Chien D’Espace, Timothy’s Monster, The Golden Core. Surprisingly, there’s actually room for more on this one – a number like Bomb-Proof would fit snugly in between Chien and Timothy, but there you go. :P

Needless to say, a lot of strong material didn’t make the cut for one reason or another – and choosing between songs was like pulling teeth. :P

@ Crackpot: Don’t forget to keep us posted when she receives it, ok? :D

      (EDIT: Damn, smiley overload there!)

@ Little Lucid Me: Nah, I know that, of course, but you were very quiet for a while and I remember you saying you didn’t really get into the last MP-concert in Apeldoorn (or was it just that you thought VS sounded dated?), so I thought you might be deserting the camp. Glad to see that is not the case and it is just another case of my “What if?”-scenario-infested brain!

You’re right about mixing it up. I didn’t mean “third country/third pop/third long songs” or something, but I do feel there has to be some kind of overall development in the selection of the songs. Even my “everything at the same time” compilations have some kind of thread to them, even though it is mostly just seen by me!

Strange thing: when I play them back, I do notice that I regularly put two songs, that are in the same key, together unconsciously.

Anyway: good to hear from you again and I hope to see you in May (Paradiso and Effenaar for me). I will be with some people, including Crackpot Idea.

      Greetings,

      Thomas

      Hey all,

After a long trek through all my MP-cd’s (edit: a bunch of cd’s, a couple of first generation cdr’s and one (official) download, I really should say), I’ve whittled the choices down to 57 “definitely’s” and 45 “maybe’s”, totalling to (gulp) 102 songs! No selection/running order of songs or calculation for times made yet.

It’s impossible to choose songs of your favourite band!

      Greets,

      Thomas

      Holy crap!

      Good work my friend!

It is nearly impossible to choose some songs over others, but I would like to give you some of my suggestions. Let me know what you think of them.

      Definitely:

Gullible’s Travails (pt. I – IV) Heavy Metal Fruit. My favourite from HMF

      True middle Blissard

      Superstooge Trust Us

      Maybe:

Stained Glass LTEC. I recently watched the DVD again which contains a superb live version of the song, I must confess that this live version is better then the studio version.

Whip That Ghost (Song For a Bro’) LTEC

I just found a song called He’s a Grunge Whore (Turbo Negro cover) which I had never heard before.

Very bluesy with walking bass lines and brushes but I’m doubtful if this belongs on a Best Of compilation.

In moments of doubt I would favour MP penned songs over covers.

It’s a pity that a epic song like The Wheel would push aside some other great songs because of the duration.

(maybe for the 4 disc version :-) )

      #16785

@ Crackpot Idea: Your suggestions have been noted, will send you a proper selection suggestion shortly. “He’s a Grungewhore” is from “Alpha Motherf*ckers: A tribute to Turbonegro”, still available new here: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1883218

      Hey all,

Well, after a lot of tweaking, searching for songs, rearranging my Nero and ultimately the best tracklist ever, put together for the biggest part by Christiaan (a.k.a. Crackpot Idea), finally the four cd compilation for Laura is finished. I’ve just burned the last cd and it sounds amazing. Full details underneath.

Now let’s hope she likes it!

      Phew & greetings,

      Thomas

good effort, but if you’re going to give her 4 times 80 minutes of music (=320 minutes!), why not just give her one or two albums and let her get into it slowly? not only you’re ripping apart some amazing albums, but also you’ll crush with just the amount of music. why not just give her for example trust us, angels and daemons at play and, say, little lucid moments for their live sound. FOR EXAMPLE. and then let her get into it herself…

i’m not against putting together playlists or small best ofs, but a four cd compilation is just kinda ridiculous :-/ those are roughly 50 songs… personally, it would take away a lot of suspense while listening to the albums afterwards since i already know half of the songs. she’ll probably be listening to the albums later on anyways, and if she still wants a best of, she can put it together herself… i don’t know. my opinion, don’t take it personally ;)

it’s an impossible task anyway. too many great songs to leave out. what would one put on a single “best of” album?

btw about bremen 2002? obviously some extraordinary recording?

        #16789

        Great effort Thomas!

        You obviously can’t please everybody.

First of all, it is nearly impossible to make a “Best Of” but there are a lot of bands who released a less complete compilation then this one is turned out to be.

Personaly I like(d) to make some MP compilation tapes for on holiday etc. and that didn’t took away the pleasure of listening to the albums a bit!

Except for Øyafestivalen where they play Timothy from beginning to end we are used to a different setlist every night.

The whole discussion about “ripping apart some amazing albums” is a bit over the top.

One of the first Jimi Hendrix albums I ever bought was ‘The Singles album’ and that didn’t spoiled the pleasure of listening later to ‘Electric Ladyland’ or ‘Axis’ for the first time (and the many times that followed).

        @ supernau:

Bremen 2002 was a good gig and a nice recording.

I understand that this 4cd compilation is for private use so I don’t have a problem for TvdR & Crackpot using songs from a other source.

Everybody is trading and downloading live recordings from Dime anyway.

I think that by listening to this compilation you will awake her interest in our favourite band and she will buy the albums anyway.

Greetings, I will see you at the tour my friends.

        :MPD:

        #16790

well, with the ripping apart albums thing i might have overdone it, you’re right… but still, coming from an obvious vinyl fan, i think this is pretty strange :-/

please don’t get me wrong, that wasn’t even my main point. i like putting together playlists too, i listen to best ofs too… and if you want to make someone discover a band, it sure is a good idea. but here, it’s just the sheer amount of material he’s putting on there that scares me. i mean, it should be more or less representative and contain the most important songs, not literally taking almost all of the best songs… if you’ve listened to one “regular” best of (the hendrix collection contains about 20 songs), you still have a lot of material to discover. but with one containing 50 songs, while listening to the albums, for every second or third album it will be “oh yeah, i already know that song…”. and then again, on the singles collection they didn’t put songs like voodoo chile ;) (comparison to gullible’s travails, little lucid moments, etc…)

just for the heck of it, i’m putting together one too, as an example, i won’t give it too much thought, in no specific order (okay, chronologically)… in the thought that i want to give someone an idea about how motorpsycho sounds.

        nothing to say

        kill some day

        watersound

        sinful, wind-borne

        heartattack mac.

        ozone

        vortex surfer

        the ocean in her eye

        the other fool

        b.s.

        triggerman

        little lucid moments

12 songs, that was done in not even 3 minutes, just as a sketch. yes, i’ve even left out it’s a love cult or heavy metal fruit, even though i love these albums.

oh well, luckily this is a free world where everyone can do as he wants, even if it’s shouting out loud that someone else’s actions displease me :D

              #16795

@ supernaut: I think you misread. “Starmelt/Lovelight” and “Stained Glass” were the only ones included from Bremen. I don’t know whether they played “…Stomp” there, but it’s not on this compilation. Christiaan found the source for the recording, but from what I’ve heard that was an exceptional Baard-era concert, and well recorded.

@ Castaway prince: Thanks! See you at the concerts?

@ leucocyte: Oh yeah, now I’m angry. Somebody diagrees with me, grrr! No seriously, I get your point completely. In the beginning I wanted to do a 2cd, but it kind of expanded. Christiaan was very much in favour of the 4cd format and, after having heard the result, I have to agree. I have done many MP-compilations over the years, starting at 45 minutes up to this staggering 300 minutes (72 minutes per cd was our limit here), and this one really flows and says a lot, but definitely not everything. Personally, I miss “Glow”, “In The Family” and “Landslide” (edit: not to mention the covers, which we decided to not use – but I still miss “Young Man Blues” – and some ep-gems like “Pat & Put”) for example. But in the end it was Christiaans baby, I just influenced a bit and did the actual burning. I should mention: the only songs on this compilation I do not own officially (on vinyl or cd or both) are the live songs, and, as discussed in another thread, I do not think Motorpsycho would mind me using those. It is all for private use, as mentioned… or intended use, at least!

              Greets,

              Thomas

very late edit: Our compilation is long? King Crimson’s “Frame by frame – The essential King Crimson” is four discs (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_by_frame). And how about “Dick’s Picks”, a retrospective of The Grateful Dead? Up to volume 36 & then continued under another name. (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead_discography#Dick.27s_Picks). Also: AC/DC’s “Bonfire” 5 disc retrospective (see: http://www.crabsodyinblue.com/acdcbonfire.htm)& Led Zeppelin’s 4cd “Boxed Set” retrospective (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin_Boxed_Set) Surely Motorpsycho is as great and as deserving of a long retrospective as these bands?
