The 20th Anniversary tour is finished. Time to make some maths!
Starting from my eternal XLS page with (almost) all the setlists of MP history, I’m going to give you some useless statistics about their 20 years live career, telling you how many times did the guys play their songs since 1990!
My database counts 688 concerts!
It’s actually not complete, because some setlist is missing (there’s a big hole back in the times when Bent kept track of setlists, and then some little holes when no fanatic-g35ers where there to write down or steal Snah’s setlists). But I can safely say that no more than 40 setlists are missing. I’ll act as if they’ve been never played…
The INTERNATIONAL TUSSLER SOCIETY concerts are NOT included!
Not all the setlists are accurate, but the great majority is.
Some “medley-covers†are missing (i.e. Not Fade Away, Turn on your Lovelight, and others which were often played in the middle of other songs) because they were not indicated in setlists.
I also had to guess some “new song†in the setlists, by their descriptions or by some logic (which makes no sense as long as MP setlists are completely unpredictable), so maybe there’s one too much “Sunship†instead of an “Alchemystâ€Â, but still, even with these approximations, I think I have a 95% correct statistics.
So, let’s start it easy:
CONCERTS BY YEAR
1990: xxxx 9

#### SOME EDITS DONE. Got some difficulties for the “Child of the Future” affair, also because, apparently, I missed the setlists of the 2006 summer festivals! If anyone have got a link to them, I’ll be happy
#### Svartlamon gig added, fall 2006 CotF added instead of LLM.
#### 2006 summer festivals added!
(are there any other concerts scheduled in 2009?)
November 18, 2009 at 20:41 #15478What an incredible nerdy, useless, fantastic and brilliant list of excellence!
Great work Marco. You rule!
I’m not worthy

November 18, 2009 at 22:04 #15479Amazing work Marco. Thank you!
If I can add something to your impressive work, Into the sun was published in:
Motorpsycho/Hedge Hog – Split 7″/CD-single (1993)
1.Into The Sun (Motorpsycho) Cover tune.
2.Surprise (Hedge Hog)
Strange Days, instead, should be an early version of Demon Box (if I remember well there is a video in Haircuts in which they play this song).

November 18, 2009 at 22:06 #15480Indeed! That’s a remarkable piece of statistic! Did you actually count all the single instances of every song? Or did you use some kind of helpful software?
There are some things worth mentioning, I think. To me it seems quite surprising that they played certain songs very rarely, f.ex.:
Babylon – 10 times
Trapdoor – 15 times
In the family – 17 times
But most surprising to me:
Sonnyboy Gaybar – just once??
I remember that back in the late ’90s/early 2000s they played it once on request as the guy who posted the setlist pointed out… Was that really the only time? Wow!
November 18, 2009 at 22:17 #15481Btw, 684 concerts (at least) in 20 years (or rather 19, as fillmore pointed out elsewhere), that’s an average of more than 34 concerts per year! Not too bad over such a long time…
November 18, 2009 at 22:21 #15482Way cool!
Addition/comment:
Someone pointed out not so long ago, that the ‘unknown new song’ that was played as opener at the Haldern pop festival in 2006 (and some other summer/fall dates in 06) was actually a forerunner of ‘child of the future’. Can someone verify?
November 18, 2009 at 22:23 #15483Classic, Marco!
It’s not that nerdy, diehard sports fans do it during every season, keeping track of stats; birdwatchers do the same thing after every trip, noting species, whether it’s the first time seen, where, when; and…oh crap, maybe it *is* nerdy, or simply obsessive
I remember that Sonnyboy Gaybar request–Berlin…the year escapes me though; they were having some technical difficulties and launched into it after some yelling from the audience, hilarious.
Did you get the Sinful, Windborne single with Workin’ for the MCA on the flipside? Wonder how that stacks up in the cover stats.
It was great fun to look over your list; in true nerd fashion since 1994 I have experienced an estimated 17.5% of the shows :MPD:
November 18, 2009 at 22:27 #15484the song that was on the 2006 summer/autumn setlists as […] was a forerunner of CotF.
November 18, 2009 at 23:17 #15485Unbelievable! But I miss Junior.
I am glad, I saw some rare songs like stalemate, she used to be a twin and stained glass. Oh, and I think neverland has been played 90 times to often
If there had been a quiz, I would never have put stg at number 1. To me it feels as if U lied was played a 1000 times.
November 19, 2009 at 00:31 #15486fantastic Marco, i’m an absolute fan of these stats! really interesting!
sonnyboy gaybar was played in Berlino “casino” in fall 2001, I was attending the show and filming! it was a wonderfull concert!
speaking about rarities, I’ve got B.S. (only 2 times played) seen in Rimini Velvet 2001
Heartattack Mac at position n°11?? shit, wow! I’ve seen it only back in 1997! it’ probably beacuse they played a lot of concerts in that year…
November 19, 2009 at 08:13 #15487Thank you all!
I didn’t actually think that anyone would have read this, but you did! So I have some corrections to do: CotF, which was apparently played! Junior, which was just skipped (it’s freudian: apparently MP forgot that song too, they don’t play it since ’96!).
Sonnyboy Gaybar was actually played only in Berlin just before another rarity, Trapdoor… But it was played of course many times in TITS concerts!
I’ll make some edits later… thank you!
Marco
November 19, 2009 at 09:12 #15488Some answers:
“Motorpsycho/Hedge Hog – Split 7″/CD-single (1993)”
Thanks! I knew it was somewhere but didn’t know where! I’ll put Into the Sun from the covers list to the “Another Ugly” period…
“Strange Days, instead, should be an early version of Demon Box (if I remember well there is a video in Haircuts in which they play this song).”
That’s some news! I have the Haircuts, but didn’t remember this info.
It makes sense, since they stopped playing “Strange Days” and then begun playing Demon Box. I’ll edit this…
“Babylon – 10 times”
“Trapdoor – 15 times”
“In the family – 17 times”
They’re quite accurate. The most surprising to me is In the Family, played only three times in ’97, and then rescued only in 2003! Babylon was abandoned quite early, probably they preferred the Tussler version. Trapdoor was played only 5 times in the Timothy’s tours, and then rescued in 2001. I think it’s simply not one of their favourite, even if it was the only chance to see Bent do a guitar solo
“Someone pointed out not so long ago, that the ‘unknown new song’ that was played as opener at the Haldern pop festival in 2006 (and some other summer/fall dates in 06) was actually a forerunner of ‘child of the future'”
Heh, as I said, “logic” doesn’t work with MP!
“Did you get the Sinful, Windborne single with Workin’ for the MCA on the flipside? Wonder how that stacks up in the cover stats.”
It’s 7 times: you can find Working for MCA among the 1994/1996 singles, as “ProMotor”!
“Unbelievable! But I miss Junior.”
Yeah, I’ll edit later. It’s a 54, anyway
“Heartattack Mac at position n°11?? shit, wow! I’ve seen it only back in 1997! it’ probably beacuse they played a lot of concerts in that year…”
Infact it’s the only “top20” that I missed! Stupid Moog!
In addition, I just discovered another show yesterday in Svartlamon! I thought they were off…
November 19, 2009 at 09:55 #15489Quote:CotF, which was apparently played!Yeah, it was played some times in 2006. Approx 9 times in total, (2 of 3 summer festivals and 7 of the 9 Norwegian dates on the autumn tour) A faster version than on the album.
November 19, 2009 at 10:13 #15490“(2 of 3 summer festivals and 7 of the 9 Norwegian dates on the autumn tour)”
Great: as for the Norway tour, I thought it was “Little Lucid Moments”!
I don’t have any summer festival setlist for that year! Can you send me a link to them?
Thank you very much
November 19, 2009 at 10:44 #15491Ok, here they are (in the old forum):
