The Death Defying Unicorn
Die grandiose, bombastische, alles niederwalzende Wiedergeburt des Progressive Rock. Die Stil-Schranken-zerschmetternde Rückkehr des kolossalen Konzeptalbums. Mehr als 80 bis an den Rand gefüllte Minuten einer Rock-Genialität, die jeglichen Atem raubt. Kurz: Das Magnum Opus von Motorpsycho. Entschuldigt die Häufung von Superlativen, aber selbst der Motorpsycho-Kenner und -Verehrer gerät ins Schlingern, angesichts dieses voluminösen Wahnsinns, der in allen Belangen nur von Größe und Schönheit kündet. Im ansprechend dicken Mehrfach-Klapp-Digipak (wahlweise auf wertem Doppel-Vinyl) kommt ein Ausnahmewerk daher, das selbst im reichen Katalog der norwegischen Rock-Grenzgänger einzigartig ist. Mehr als zwei Jahre der Entwicklung steckt in dem Projekt, dass das Trio gemeinsam mit dem Keyboarder & Komponisten Stale Storlokken erarbeitete, fast dreißig Musiker, darunter das Trondheim Jazz Orchestra und das Ensemble Trondheimsolistene, erschufen das aus 13 kunstvollst konzipierten Epen bestehende Opus, das mir den Glauben an die unstillbare Lebendigkeit und kreative Kraft des Progressive Rock wiedergibt. Obwohl zahlreiche, orchestrale klassische Motive verwandt und mannigfache, gern auch lustvoll disharmonische Jazz-Querverweise verarbeitet werden, ist das Konzeptwerk kein mehrfach durchgekautes, nach Zahlen gemaltes Rock meets Klassik meets Jazzalbum, sondern ein lebendiges, vielfältig schillerndes, aus allen Schubladen berstendes, dennoch natürliches Amalgam geworden, das mit Metall-harten oder bös-verzerrten Blues-Gitarren, machtvollem Schlagwerk, mitreißendem Gesang, Klarinetten-Kaskaden, Saxophon-Salven und breitester Blech-Blas- und Streich-Orchester-Allmacht dem final ergötzten Hörer die Sinne raubt. Kaum in einem einzigen Hörgang zu erfassen, gewinnt der vor Ideen platzende Progressive-Rausch mit jedem neuen Zusammentreffen, wobei nur der komplette Genuß auch der volle Genuß ist. Herrlich, dass mich nach den Jahrzehnten des aktiven Musikhörens ein neues Album noch derart überfahren, mitreissen und beglücken kann. Ein Mammut-Meisterwerk. (cpa)

Okay, I should definitely not have said "MP-haters"! There weren't any! However there were people who cannot find anything in MP (yet?) who raised their voices against MP being one of the three headliners of DF because to them that seemed like a "waste" of precious festival-time. Apparently there were quite a few of those mails.

Update: My contact at DF just wrote me a Facebook message confirming that day tickets will be made available "next month"!
It's not a hostile scene or attitude (maybe "MP-haters" was the wrong term to choose). It's the Stoner scene you know. They love simple formulas for their music and one thing MP isn't about is a simple formula. So there are many individuals from this scene who are not interested in seeing MP. Many of the city's stoner people have actually seen MP in 2010 at the same venue when local Stoner gods RotoR supported MP. I talked to some people afterwards and while some were genuinely impressed a great deal of them still claimed that RotoR put on the better show, a statement I simply cannot comprehend. The festival bookers however said they realise MP isn't a band for everyone but they deliberately chose them in order to bring some diversity to the program.
Btw, it cannot hurt to write to Desertfest and enquire about the on-sale date of the one-day tickets and let them know that we appreciate that they booked MP. I was told they receive many mails, many of whom comment on the choice of bands. It seems the DF-crowd is evenly divided into MP-lovers and MP-haters. Many complained about MP being the headliner, asking if another band would play on the second stage while MP will be playing. Also we should really raise the pressure on DF for them to finally release the one-day passes so we can make travel arrangements. I am abit anxious they might ultimately not make one day passes available if the other tix will sell well.
