Laird of Heimly sounds like something off Led Zeppelin III with strings arranged for George Harrison by George Martin.

@Ratmaus: Haha, Bent jokingly (?) warned me that the new album might be too much Zeppelin for my taste. Haven’t noticed it after four playthroughs, but from now on it’s perhaps ruined :D
So far I think the album shifts from good to REALLY good (and more interesting) after “The comeback”, with “Neotzar (the second coming)” as highlight. But I’m a bit slow when it comes to liking new stuff, so I guess I’ll soon enough find favorites among the first four tracks as well.@suntripper: I was very close to namechecking that album as well! I just can’t imagine Bent admitting to have taken any inspiration from that one. 😉

Really like that tasty riff on The Comeback. It wouldn’t be out of place on Child of the Future.
A slightly more personal observation: Listening to This is Your Captain immediately after Balthazaar is like talking to someone really bright with a lot of cool ideas and then meeting their brother who’s probably equally bright but who also happens to smoke a LOT of weed. It works pretty well, actually!
Well, what’s there to say? Another MP classic in an already stacked discography.
There are some nitpicks tho: Some of the songs are less spectacular. I suspect I will feel the same about The Comeback as On A Plate: Boring on record, but a blast live. Kip Satie never stood a chance, being a 2 minute interlude before Balthazaar. And 3Monkeys is way too similar and less interesting than the other krauty tracks on here.
Highlights: Lucifer (that mid-section is danceable and has a lot of drive), Friends of Heimly, Balthazaar (those last 4 minutes, god damn!), Neotzar (best 20+ minute epic since Gullible?) and Dead Of Winter (beautiful ‘normal’ song to end the album)
Bleak lyrics, but they fit the music pretty well.
Great guest appearances that add a lot to the songs. Ingvald especially shows diversity in his drumming, doing simple drum patterns in the shorter songs while also showing off with more complex shit in the longer ones

The bass riff (and sound) on Lucifer is so un-Bentish! Actually, it immediately made me think of Block Rockin’ Beats by the Chemical Brothers – which is a really odd reference in a MP context. There are so many funny, little details all over this album, I don’t even know where to start! Anyway, I haven’t bought the physical album yet. Who’s responsible for the artwork this time? I really like those masks that also show up in those loops on Spotify.
