Finally I’ve heard the album as well!
Don’t agree too much on the Barracuda tendencies. Only the main riff of W.B.A.T could’ve been on Barracuda as that one is a bit cock-rockish.
First impressions:
Starhammer: IMO they unfortunately start off the album on a weak note. The main theme is great of course, but the jam doesn’t really go anywhere for quite a while. Then suddenly it builds up to a cool explosion and then back to the main theme. So far for me, it’s the weakest song on here, but there are vast possibilities of jamming in a live context. Potential live-monster.
X-3 (Knuckleheads In Space)/The Getaway Special: Two songs in one really. First one is a Deep Purple-inspired speedy rocker with the catchiest chorus on the album. Then halfway it becomes a jazzy instrumental with great trumpet from Mathias Eick. Messy, but entertaining as fuck.
The Bomb-Proof Roll & Beyond: They’ve learned a trick or two from Mars Volta lately. There is a section of white noise midway here similar to the one on Conjugal Burns on the Bedlam In Goliath album. And lotsa tricky vocal-harmonies too, esspecially near the end. Cool stuff.
Close Your Eyes: Piano ballad with usual Bent vox. Some background guitar picking and noises (e-bow possibly?). A good breather inbetween all the bombast.
W.B.A.T: More Mars Volta in the beginning, Kenneth’s best percussion performance of the record. Then turns into a Barracuda-influenced riff and later grows and builds, grows and builds. Great fucking song!
Gullible’s Travails I-IV: Agree with every word Marty said in his review. There is also a hidden outro at the end which sounds like it was tacked on randomly, having nothing to do with the rest of the piece. Classic song that should be performed a lot during upcoming gigs. Only a couple sections of Phoots Flower made it on here. Ending is very Fragile/Close To The Edge/Relayer-ish.
So a very good first impression actually. Starhammer being the worst doesn’t say much because it’s got some great parts, but the jam was non-descript and a bit low on energy. But be warned: This requires a lot of listening! But all the more rewarding in the end, I guess.
January 10, 2010 at 13:18 #14839I actually like the kinda understated way they jam in Starhammer.
January 10, 2010 at 13:22 #14840Well, that’s a matter of taste Marty. I wasn’t too thrilled about the jam in the studio-version of Sunship, but I grew to accept it. I might with Starhammer’s jam too, but it just felt like it coulda been better. Really really like the build-up at the end of it though.
January 10, 2010 at 13:27 #14841I can relate to that. I don’t think Timothy’s Monster or Trust Us can be “topped”. But this is a silly thing to say about a band that grows over decades into various directions like a tentacle monster. And besides tons of inevitable nostalgia, what criteria would one consider? I just hope every new album comes like a hoof to the head.

January 11, 2010 at 16:10 #14843January 11, 2010 at 18:23 #14844ok first post on the forum.. let me jump straight in. this album is pretty amazing. i haven’t felt this way about a record in a long time. as a fan of everything psychedelic, from the 60’s till now, i think their jamming is amazing. it has alot of colors and they are great musicians. starhammer is a great opener. i understand what otherdemon is saying, but the song is just too overwhelming for me to pass up.
after a first listen it feels i’ve been listening to multiple albums at once, lot’s of different things to enjoy and discover. the last ‘song’ is incredible by the way, halfway it turns into a thumping jam with a proggy ending.. anyway, i’ll be running to my record store as soon as my vinyl copy arrives.
January 11, 2010 at 19:16 #14845i’m listening to hmf for the first time now. WOW!!! very inspired and energetic. i am positively surprised by bent’s vocals especially, as they sounded like it was more of a duty than real fun recently. fellow’s back on track! concerning kenneth, i have to agree that there is a noticable shift towards the geb-style.
i am so buying both vinyl and cd! :MPD:
January 11, 2010 at 19:26 #14846why is anyone listening to the new recording right now!? is there a leak or what?! 8O
January 11, 2010 at 19:40 #14847Promo CDs have been all over the place.
January 11, 2010 at 19:56 #14848also, there IS a leak, but i strongly advise against it.. the quality is horrible
wait for the real thing
January 12, 2010 at 18:44 #14849Anyone know if the vinyl will come with mp3 coupon??
January 12, 2010 at 22:40 #14850I found the leak, but was unable to download more then most of Starhammer. And YES…the quality really sucks! But on the other hand….the song is spectacular! That quiet jam part is simply stunning! Hope to get the rest of the album down sometime tonight. Note; I’ve ordered the album, so this is just to tame my massive curiousity until it’s in my hands!
January 13, 2010 at 03:34 #14851wish you all a nice time with the album. i have to wait 2 more month, as i am in south east asia at the moment. see you on the tour in may!!! à ¸¡à ¹ˆà ¸§à ¸™
