Dortmund was so very very very good!
Originally scheduled as an open air show the concert was moved into the smaller indoor club space. The band entered the stage when the clock stroke 8pm. They faced us with a new stage set up that saw Bent and Snah unusally sat side by side on the right side of the stage.
The set worked like a charm through a constant ebb and flow of delicate jamming, typically quirky Snah vocals and rocking parts. Fortunately stripped of the many pop numbers that have dotted the setlists the last two years, I should say this set and the music contained within was very psychedelic.
Reine didn’t switch from Mellotron or keys to guitar until “LLM”. “This Otherness” is a great deep cut to unearth and it did fit the set perfectly. After two hours, beginning with “Gaia II” (which Bent cannot sing for the life of him), the concert was routed towards a typically rocking and slightly perfunctory climax of “You Lied” and “Mountain” with a predictable encore of “Gullible”.
Crucially, I want to say that Stian is responsible for the unexpected quality of the first two hours. He fits like a glove, his presence is so natural, not overbearing but also not underplaying it. He is the guy they need to hold on to in order to maintain and raise the quality again.
Let me add though, it might have helped that my knowledge of their repertoire of the last two decades gets really spotty as the years drag on so a set like this exclusively and bravely composed of songs that were released after 2000, or overwhelmingly in the last 10 years respectively, gives me a genuine taste of freshness and obscurity.
My expectations were low, but Dortmund has indeed shown me that two hours of Motorpsychedelia are still some of the finest soul healing available to us.
