Those are very good points. Both this particular song and the album as a whole is quite varied, and both in a organic way that feels natural and your observations about how a lot of people write and talk about the albums as 'proggy', 'straight rocking' and so on are also spot on. Why does those initial labels stick?

The press release at Rune Grammofon may indicate an answer: 'The initial idea was to collect big riffs on one album and do a pure hard rock record' it says, and 'the main musical thrust is pretty full-on, even by Motorpsycho standards'. I guess it is easy to get coloured by that, you have an entry point to a new album, and I suppose a lot of reviewers also go to the album with that in the back of their mind, not because the are lazy or bad but just because that's how the mind works. And then the those characteriations get repeated and take on a life on their own. (Heck, I know people who still are under the impression that MP is that alternative, heavy, noisy outfit it was 1991-1993!)

As per usual with an MP album it turns out to not to be quite that easy (as in fairness Rune's press release also says), they are usually more multifaceted than that, and yet having that unmistakable and everpresent Motorpsychoness that shines through in their songwriting, arrangements and playing, and those (like most of us in this forum) who listen will discover that, and rediscover and reappreciate albums again.

Watching this guy discovering MP was quite nice though. That grin on his face!

Agree. And speaking of entry points: alongside the press releases came The Waning as "album teaser", which at first glance is a rocker. So minds were set. But this one also goes strange places throughout, more so than Bartok or The Cuckoo or ASFE anyway. Yes, the mind works the way you describe. Once an idea is planted in the head, it's hard to get away from it despite any obvious contradictions. The Cure come to mind. Only 3 of their 15ish albums are truly dark, but they've been and will be considered a depressing goth outfit forever.

          Motorpsycho The Waning (Pt.1) – First Listen/Reaction:

I'm a big fan of this album, but not of this track – especially part 1. I wonder why the band seem to value it so highly, even making it like the shop window for the album? If this is all the Motorpsycho someone ever gets exposed to they'll have no hint of the treasures that lie beyond. Simone Giacomini and Hans J. Pande, if you happen to look in here, I totally endorse your comments.

@ suntripper – I was very disappointed by the choice of song for a First Reaction video. I guess someone had suggested he listen to Motorpsycho and he just picked the first song he found. He needs other, specific suggestions!

@Punj Lizard – Ha! I was just about to respond to you, saying that you could do a lot worse than those recommended by Hans J. Pande in the comments section and then I saw that you yourself had visited and gone to quite some trouble to fill people in. Bravo! I notice that you didn't recommend anything from this album. Much of it is really good as far as I'm concerned and (maybe I'm in the minority here) I really like the sound of it too. I do think people need to know, however, that this particular track is very, very ordinary by Motorpsycho standards.

@ suntripper – I hope I didn't over do it. As usual I got a bit carried away. I didn't recommend anything from KOO on purpose because he'd already listened to one track from it and made negative comments about the production. So I figured why bother. Besides which, there's so much more to choose from! There's no reason why you shouldn't add a comment though – the more the merrier

All first reactors should start with NOX.

But what a strange concept to judge a song by first listen. How much music was left undiscovered, just imagine…

@ boomer former helm: I agree (I would have missed out on A LOT of my favorite music if I went by first impression), but even more strange to actually look at someone judging a track during first listen.

Though: I don't blame anyone! I'm wasting sooo much time just looking at clips of dogs doing nothing at all :|

I support what Punj Lizard does and writes – as usual.

Just another reaction video – The United Debased accompanied by some of the most understated air guitar you'll ever see.

7:08 "What does this remind me of suddenly?"

Erm, I think it might be 'Crazy Horses'?

You're right in every sense – I'm beginning to discover Motorpsycho's latest studio album just now ;-)

Most of these "first listen" clips are just a waste of time – an opportunity to show off, make goofy faces and fake concentrated listening. I wonder if much of the music involved is ever listened to for a second or third time.

The more "exotic" the musical product, the higher the chances of faking expertise – or just creating attention. After all – there must be more Motorpsycho discoveries these days in the US than actual sales, streamings or whatever. Just wondering…

So Reine is now doing Motorpsycho reaction videos?

The reaction video forest is a dark and depressing place full of attention/view seeking fakers, but there are also some genuine music lovers out there.

There are a couple more though. Thinking of 'The Daily Doug', 'Key of Geebz' and 'Lost in Vegas'. They all seem very genuine to me and I enjoy (most of) their videos a lot. Geebz and especially Doug are very adept and capable (great musical knowledge). No MP in there so far, as far as I know, but a good dose of rock, metal & prog generally. But this is getting a bit off-topic :-)

On a more positive note: at least the reactioneers (no political pun intended) get to listen to some new, non-mainstream music, which might even advance Motorpsychedelic appreciation in the less enlightened corners of the world ;-)

@TraktorBass: Yes! I thought Reine too! Mind you, Reine is positively hyperactive compared to this guy!

I agree these reaction videos can be a bit underwhelming and there's no doubt the best music takes time to be fully appreciated. However, I still think it's worth linking to them – partly just to document them, but as much for the comments below as anything. Also, as Johnny says, they might be doing a job.

Many thanks, though, for linking to the brother listening to 'Close the Edge' – that was a great watch! Over 400k views! He is very entertaining and I loved watching him being blown away! It's difficult to get your head around the fact that he is listening to music made half a century ago – and it still hasn't been surpassed! Well, except maybe by…

(Ever seen a drummer more keen to get to the end of a song?)
