I'm just copy-editing a book on music history and a chapter on new directions in jazz in the 50, 60s and 70s makes reference to a jazz pianist called Lennie Tristano. This is the first time I've heard of him and the only time (outside of Motorpsycho) that I've heard the Tristano name. Given the other tracks on In The Fishtank 10 I assume this is an intentional reference. Can anybody confirm this? Does anybody know anything else about the inspiration for this track and its title?
Tristano was the name of a riff/song, that MP played a lot around 2000-2002, sometimes in combinations with other songs, like in Super-Tristano. The Fishtank version is the only officially recorded one, as far as I know. There was a live version played at the Rockpalast gig (Bizarre Festival 2002) featuring Jaga Jazzist Horns.
If that spiralling melody/riff was actually inspired by Lenny Tristano you'll have to ask Snah. But possible it is, given to Lenny Tristano numbers such as this:

@ Johnny – I agree – I listened to that Turkish Mambo and the track valdra linked to and MP's Tristano certainly seems like it could have been inspired by them and maybe other Lennie Tristano pieces.
I have a couple of those Tristano recordings (Bergen 1999-10-23 and Oslo 2001-10-19), the latter featuring JJ Horns too. When I first heard In the Fishtank 10 I had assumed Tristano was primarily a JJ Horns invention, which I would have been convinced of had I known of Lennie Tristano. Eventually I discovered it was a Snah creation and that MP had played it prior to hooking up with JJ Horns. Having today discovered Lennie Tristano I'm once again smiling at the inventivenes with which MP draw on their influences. :MPD:
@ Johnny_Heartfield: Thanks, you made me realize that I'm (most probably) wrong. First off the legendary knight is Tristan, not Tristano, which is just the italian translation. Furthermore, Turkish Mambo's theme and meter are remarkably similar. I should never take for granted Bent and Snah's taste in music!
