Just read Oliver Pollak's Motorpsycho report in this month's German Rolling Stone. A little too much fan-writing for me – like that here, but I'd wish regular music journalists of big quality magazines would care more for MP instead of sending out the odd well-known fan (if there's one).
Nevertheless several 70s influences on MP are quoted in that article – the usual ones, and then MYGOD himself: Roy Harper. I never spotted any direct Harper reference in any MP song or tune, but his naming (by the band, obvioulsy) is to be expected, It is probably not a question of special songs or tunes, but the overall attitude: sheer sincerity and into your face criticism, not to mention a certain melancholic, slightly folky romantic mood in many of his songs. And of course his love of spacey effects…
I recently discovered quite a lot of Harper influence in early Jethro Tull acoustic tunes. How about MP – any ideas?
I've only ever came across Roy through his connections with Pink Floyd, but "influence in early Jethro Tull acoustic tunes"? I looove those (and Anderson's voice) so I must check him out more… I hardly know his work.
If you know Roy's early Work ca. 1967-70 you will find that style and mood in many of the earlier Tull acoustic numbers.
Shame he's known to most people only through "Have a cigar". Check out the albums "Folkjokeopus" or "Stormcock" as well!
Obviously Bent is in Folk/songwriter mode at the moment – wonder if that will have any influence on the material they are about to record these days.
I can vividly imagine them doing Same old Rock at the start of a show or as a first encore, sitting on barstools with Bent singing and Snah doing that Jimmy Page thing on that great final riff, with Tomas playing tambourine, hand cymbals or some other kind of percussive weirdness
Motorhead`s Whorehouse Blues comes to my mind – just as a visual blueprint for the thing, musically I consider it a rather dull blues number…
