I decided it would be interesting to have this series about "This day in MOTORPSYCHO history" on my MotorpsychoNews Facebook page. Beginning today MotorpsychoNews will continuously look back at important cornerstones and events in the band's history. For this I'll focus on the 10, 15 and 20-year anniversaries of the respective events, meaning that in 2011 the years 1991, 1996 and 2001 will be first focused on. I figured it might be fun and appropriate to post the entries on this board as well. It is my hope that the snapshots from the past will inspire many of you to look back and share some motorpsychodelic memories. This could also serve as a valuable vehicle to gather important information about the band's history. If enough material is being assembled it might even ultimately justify creating a Motorpsycho chronology / timeline of some sort. You will have to bear with me as I am quite obviously not Mr. Know-It-All. I have to research this using the invaluable archive of the UnOff, the g35 archive, Dampsaba as well as searching the internet. Naturally I do depend on your knowledge and corrections and I would love if this series spawned a lively and rich discussion!
Here is the first entry:

Ten years ago on this day in 2001 "Barracuda" was released! The mini LP which was housed in a cover designed by Bent collected the rocking left-overs from the "Let them eat cake" sessions in 1999. Originally the album was intended to be released on the then legendary Man's Ruin-label fom America. After the album leaked to Napster and Man's Ruin didn't really work on the release the band did release it on Stickman. Eventually the album went to #8 of the Norwegian charts! Many fans regard "Barracuda" as one of the band's weaker efforts. It featured however the legendary tune "Dr. Hoffman's bicycle". "Vanishing point", "High time" and "Glow" are the only songs which are still being performed live. "Rattlesnake" on the other hand was never played in concert. The German mag Visions ran a lenghty and insighful feature to commemorate the release of the album.

Fifteen years ago on this day "Blissard" was released! The album would eventually rise to #3 of the Norwegian charts. This was the first chart notation for Motorpsycho!
February 17, 2011 at 19:50 #1919515 years ago… you must be kidding. Sure, it does not exactly seem like yesterday anymore, but 15… a lot happened since then. You just caused a trip down memory lane Alex

Fifteen years ago on this day Motorpsycho played the first proper concert of 1996 at Studenten in Steinkjer (NOR). In this show they would debut "Heartattack Mac" and "Starmelt/lovelight". They also played one of only two versions of "Sister confusion" performed in 1996 (and the fourth last to date). Altogether the band played 61 shows in 1996, making it the fourth busiest year of their career. Compare the year 1996 in Dampsaba!

Fifteen years ago, on this day in 1996, Motorpsycho performed at Rockefeller in Oslo for the third time in their career. The show was recorded and aired on Norwegian radio NRK P3 and eventually became — together with the concert at Rockefeller the following spring — one of the two most widely spread unofficial Motorpsycho live recording!

Five years ago on this day "Black Hole / Blank Canvas" was released!
March 17, 2011 at 19:19 #19199Wow, five years since the rebirth? That long already? I must be getting old! Hang on: getting old?
March 17, 2011 at 22:35 #19200Only five years? …feels like an eternity. I often remember these days Bonny Lee->Blueberry Daydream from Roncade 2006 or LTEC->Tristano wich seems so far away now… AND: it was pre-Kenneth era (How great would have been it with him???). Hope, that recordings from Italy 2006 will surface sometime. But now I'm looking forward to RW4 :MPD:

Fifteen years ago on this day "The Nerve Tattoo" EP (Psychobabble 04) was released! Arguably their greatest "pop" number this EP also contained off-center cuts like the first released Geb-oddity „Of beacons and beams“ or the Deathprod solo track „Pale day“, but also an acoustic rendition of "The wheel" and the cult track "Mad sun". The first CD edition housed in a digi-pack eventually became a sought-after rarity.

Fifteen years ago on this day Motorpsycho played the Schlachthof in Bremen (GER) for the first time! This club is considered by many travelling psychonauts to be (one of) the best concert venues to see the band at! After debuting at Wehrschloss in 1995, the band played all following shows in the city (97, 98, 00, 01, 02, 08, 10) at the great Schlachthof! The club's inside looks like a post-industrial ampthitheatre: The floor itself in front of the stage holds room for merely five rows of people. From there steps and galleries are rising up to the roof of the giant former boiler-house semi-circling the stage and thus allowing each audience member to focus their undivided attention on the band! Due to this set up the band is practically surrounded by the crowd facing a wall of people which creates an unmatched directness and communication between the audience and the performer. One of the best spots in the room is to be found in front of the soundboard on the second step from the floor. When standing there one faces the band eye-to-eye with the musicians being just a few metres away. Combined with a dedicated fan-base this setting has produced many sublime Motorpsycho concerts at Schlachthof, where the crowd would listen attentively instead of chatting – total indulgence in Motorpsycho's magic guaranteed!

April 4, 2011 at 18:53 #19204Memories! The Bremen gig 2008 was indeed one of the tour highlights and worth travelling from Sweden. I remember sombody filming the whole concert from the PA stand with a semi-proessional camera. Does anybody has a copy??? Thanks Alex for the work you put into this forum.
April 4, 2011 at 21:59 #19205Oh yeah, Schlachthof (translates as "slaughter house")! Absolutely agreed, fillmore, it's one of the best venues I've seen them at. My first Schlachthof-MP-experience was the gig in 2000, their fourth one there. It was fantastic! They were touring with LTEC but also, RW I had been released only a year before, so everybody was not only curious about the new stuff but eager to get some of the superb A K9 Suite. And indeed, they played UN CHIEN, even if different than on RW I, plus WALKING ON THE WATER/BLACK TO COMM and a few other gems like TIME TO SKATE! The whole setlist was really great! They closed with VS after Un Chien… Man, what a night! Oh, right… and what a venue!
