Beeing a fan for 5 years, I really want to see Motorpsycho this summer, and I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on which festival I should attend for my first MP concert?
Jun 30. 2018 Stokkøya Festival – Norway
Jul 21. 2018 Moldejazz Molde – Norway
Jul 26. 2018 Zakk Düsseldorf – Germany
Jul 27. 2018 Burg Herzberg Festival – Germany
Sep 02. 2018 Bruis Maastricht – Netherlands
June 16, 2018 at 14:41 #33037You should attend Stokkøya for your first gig. Then you should attend the rest.
June 16, 2018 at 15:52 #33038I donr know which ones are festivals but you should definetley go to a full length show and not a festival – sorry traktor bass- if you never seen the guys before . They play much longer usually. Düsseldorf would fit that. :STG:
June 16, 2018 at 16:01 #33039I agree with mybestfriend83. I wanted to do one show this summer, so I'm flying over from the UK for the Düsseldorf gig.
June 16, 2018 at 16:07 #33040I can warmly recommend Burg Herzberg Festival – great relaxed atmosphere, nice people, one of the few MP gigs with an audience exceeding 1000 people and yet space for everyone and room to move. And Motorpsycho have always been excellent at Herzberg (3 gigs so far).
If you can afford it go to Düsseldorf for a full warm-up show and then to Herzberg for the following days. Never a letdown.
I'm not sure if I would travel long distance for a Düsseldorf gig alone – the venue is rather small and does not have the best sound at full volume. Being from Cologne I have to say that – but I hope you all enjoy that gig anyway
June 16, 2018 at 19:47 #33041@johnny heartfield. I dont know if it was you but i had that same kind of discussion a few months ago.lol I think you can not compare the zakk with the paradiso in Amsterdam or bigger venues BUT where i stand [in the middle 5or6 row] the sound was allways good. And i went a few times there to see different artists. Off course you have only about 400 -500 people there but i prefer smaller venues. :STG:
June 18, 2018 at 16:42 #33042I compared Zakk to Stollwerck in Cologne which I do prefer. Living a 10 minutes walk away from Stollwerck this is quite natural
The Zakk in Düsseldorf is a legendary Club and quite nice if you get 200 people maximum, but with a crowd of 400-500 at least one third will not get a satisfactory sight and sound – that's the impression I got from my several visits there. I did enjoy a very nice Yo La Tengo gig there 12 years ago, but the MP shows were always too loud and too muddy for the venue and my taste. Same thing with the Gloria Theatre in Cologne. At Stollwerck I had this effect only at the Unicorn gig in 2012 – last two gigs were very clear sounding despite the volume.
I'm somebody who needs room to move at gigs, so I was always very happy at MP's Herzberg festival shows despite much bigger crowds. In the end its up to everyone himself. This year I decided against Zakk but will probably go to the Maastricht festival. Time will show. Enjoy your Zakk gig though!
June 18, 2018 at 20:10 #33043Okay . I went 3 or 4 times to stollwerk. If you live there it is good for you lol Sound was good there too. For the Zakk Well i can not speak for the people whereever they stand. I allways thought it was sounding good. But i am no Professional Sound guy.lol Anyway. Wish you a good concert whereever you enjoy it this summer johnny heartfield. :MPD: :STG:
June 19, 2018 at 17:06 #33044Qwck, if you are made of money, go see them in Molde. It is a good festival, I guess it will be indoors, and that they get a good, not too short slot there. I was there in 2002, great experience.
I myself prefer club concerts, so I will see them in Düsseldorf. I would not worry too much about the sound there. I have been there a couple of times, and I just move around a bit until I find a good spot. You should do the same. There is always good sound somewhere in a room (sound center) which you find by looking at the PA and noticing where it is pointing. Where the sound from the two speaker towers meet will usually be the best place to be. Also look for the sound booth. It is most often in sound center, as long as it is not placed at one of the sides or too far back.
I would also have liked to see the Burg Herzberg concert, but with a 130 Euro ticket combined with camping and a time slot of 00:45 in the night I opt out this time.
June 19, 2018 at 18:47 #33045The Molde concert will be at Teatret VÃ¥rt – capasity 350. I guess that would count as a club concert?
It's the final concert of the festival, starting Saturday night at 2400 – so they can play as long as they like. The concert will be featuring Kristoffer Lo and Ola Kvernberg(!) It wouldn't surprise me if we would hear a few bars of his Steamdome somewhere in there.
June 19, 2018 at 19:56 #33046Thank you so much for all the answers and discussions!
I didn't expect to get this much detailed knowledge and experience sharing.
I had almost decided on the Herzberg Festival, but now I am considering going to Molde instead.
Coming from south norway, the distance is almost the same. But i haven't been that far north in about 10 years, so it's about time.
On the other side, I'm not interested in much else than Motorpsycho in Molde.
The Herzberg festival sounds like a lot of fun, and can be combined with a trip to the Netherlands or somewhere else in Europe, but they only play for 45 minutes..
Molde is probably a better, longer concert, and a lot cheaper too, considering travel expenses and such.
June 19, 2018 at 22:51 #33047Qwck: A clarification, in case I was unclear: At Burg Herzberg they start playing at 00:45. The previous sets there have been around 90-100 minutes.
ThorEgil: That would count as a club concert, indeed! I would definitely go see it if I could.
June 20, 2018 at 15:25 #33048Ah, okay Anders, I misunderstood you, thanks for the clarification!
