Could be some sort of an Oscillator thingy. Or a Pitch Shifter pedal, there's a blue one by BOSS that can do just that. Also there are Sitar simulator pedals. Since they play along the Beatles' "within you without you" at this very moment, a song that originally featured sitar, they might have wanted to add this sonic touch.
