One could almost say nobody talks anymore, the public discourse is gone, it's ugly like never before, and binary thinking has won.

@ Hans Boller – I should think there has been an awful lot of debate among scientists but that it gets watered down to whatever the politicians decide and media interpret and what they both think the general public can understand or process as well as what the politicians think is the most effective but also easiest way of keeping the public under control.

In the UK the government's handling has been disastrous (vaccine programme aside) but the incumbent government still manages to maintain a healthy lead in the polls because they've managed to undermine anyone who questions them by saying we should all be pulling in one direction and supporting the government at a time of emergency. Consequently both the media and the opposition have virtually stopped challenging the government or trying to hold them to account for their dreadful handling and corrupt handing out of contracts to friends, donors and relatives.

When I saw the title The United Debased I remembered the band had played that and another new track at gigs last year. The other was titled The Hornet. I wonder what happened to that – maybe the title changed.

In any case, 12 new tracks should provide an interesting assortment to get stuck into. Can't wait. :MPD:

A little more info from Rune Grammofon about the new album

            Quote:
One would think that after the “GullvÃ¥g Trilogy” – two double and a single album in a mere three years – this ultra productive trio might be in need of a break of sorts… but on the other hand, riding a golden wave like never before in their 30+ year existence, why stop now? Especially when constantly upping their own quality standards.

The bulk of the album was recorded in France back before the pandemic, but was added to, expanded, tweaked and eventually finished last year. The initial idea was to collect big riffs on one album and do a pure hard rock record, but the objective changed along the way as they rediscovered their folkish bent and how this lighter touch gave it all a nice contrast. That said, the main musical thrust is pretty full-on, even by Motorpsycho standards.

Kingdom of Oblivion was mixed by Andrew Scheps and produced by Bent Sæther.

Reine Fiske guests on several tracks.

Cover art is by Sverre Malling and cover design is by HÃ¥vard Gjelseth.

I love that the band gets involved in these kinds of projects. Whether new music is involved or not, the experience widens their horizons and feeds back into the band in ways that may or may not be obvious – both financially (I hope) and creatively.

Good luck for the lifting of lockdown.

Check out up and coming British rock band Torus. I think they could appeal to a few people here.

Last week, a new album was announced from the institution Motorpsycho. Not terribly many details about the music on albums publicly, than so far. The release date is currently 16 April. And a little more complementary info about the cover. Because where the last three studio albums have been adorned with paintings by Håkon Gullvåg, this time the immediately unmistakable pencil line by Sverre Malling is in front. We got a quick comment from Malling:

                  – I received a request from Motorpsycho to draw a record cover for the album. The title cut, "Kingdom of Oblivion", is about the opiate epidemic. After getting acquainted with the pictorial associations, I suggested a recent drawing that I thought could fit . And when vocalist Bent and HÃ¥vard Gjelseth (graphic designer, also known for extensive work with Crispin GloverRecords, journ.anm.) Saw this drawing, they found both a relation to, and an extension of the title. By drawing both the logo and the record title by hand, the result was also a composition more directly related to the record.

I just read an interview with Bent from November in which he said that the new music he'd recently listened to included Idles, Black Midi, Astrosaur, Smerz, Ultraflex and Valkyrien Allstars. Maybe some of that will have had an influence.

@ marc – thanks for that info on Malling and Swinburne.

I'm interested to see how much symmetry there is between the music/lyrics and the artwork and its subject. I'm also curious to find out how much the style/look of the artwork has any resonance in the style/sound of the music. I've mentioned before that I'd love to hear the band put together a semi-acoustic album along the lines of Led Zeppelin III, Neil Young's After the Goldrush, and David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name… Perhaps something like supernaut describes in his post above. In any case, even though I didn't like the new cover at first glance, I've been drawn deeper into it and am really intrigued by its contrasts with the Gullvag covers, but also by its weirdly dark, psychedelic yet warmly pastoral themes.

A change of sonic palette would be welcome (not that I've anything against the three albums that have gone before), but I wonder how much of the material originates in the recordings for The All Is One, because earlier reports from the band suggested there was a lot more material in the can than was released. Deathprod's and Schepps' involvement might indicate that at least some of it comes from those recording sessions, but then again wasn't there also more recent news of time spent in studio? I know all this speculation is mostly pointless (other than the fun and satisfaction I get from speculating in and of itself), and I'm guessing it won't be long before Monsiuer Le Bad lays much of the details on us, but for now, I live in excited anticipation of the music to come.

I've already read on one forum a couple of people decrying the rate at which the band release new music – "less is more", "quality over quantity" etc. To my mind, the quality is so high and the journey so full of unexpected turns that in this particular band's case less simply cannot be more. Thank you Motorpsycho for always keeping it interesting and for not taking your foot off the gas. :-)

I could say I'm happy about this news but that would be an understatement.

Thanks. Just been listening to Pangea. Really lovely. Can't say it's easy to find out anything about them – searches throw up too many other results. The lack of a Bandcamp page is really sad.
