That would be BERLIN 10.11. because it had the best jams of my sample (Hamburg, Papenburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Hannover).
Motorpsycho wrap up the "Tower Tour" on a Saturday night at Hannover's Faust. This well played concert rather focuses on showcasing a wealth of material instead of indulging in lengthy improvisations. It might be unfair to call this tour finale anticlimatic but the band didn't exactly honour the occasion with a special setlist, a very long show or other tricks. Still, there are many genuine highlights scattered liberally across sthe show: A juicy take on "Mountain" works very well as second song while a beautiful version of "PPPP" features an elegantly flowing jazzy psychedelic middle jam and brief but spot-on space passages spice up both "Ship Of Fools" and "Spin Spin Spin". In fact, the band's playing is so good, tight and fluent that we get truely "Roadworks"-ready versions of "Intrepid Explorer" and "DreamHome". "Kill Some Day" on the other hand is being smothered by volume and the vocals do not sit right. The versatility of the material and various styles covered during the course of this set is breathttaking, but ultimately it prevents this concert from delevoping a natural flow. The magic of the sequence evaporates a bit after a strong and cohesive run through the first five numbers up to "DreamHome", at which point they seem to only string together good individual songs. Bent does a long thank you speech during which Tomas and Kristoffer receive well deserved thundering applause before "Vortex Surfer" appropriately closes the tour and sends the fans home, out in the cold November night, but already longing for more…
Looks innocent enough on paper but they were very far out, at one point I was wondering what they must have taken. Very different and very psychedelic jams in "Cornucopia", "Un Chien" (37 min), "Go To California" and "Superstooge". The fourth and best concert of my "Tower" tour so far. Great venue too!
The day after Köln where our heroes have just performed the longest concert of the tour yet Motorpsycho deliver another long, playful, entertaining and very engaged show in Leipzig. They take the stage 10 minutes past show time (21:10) with "ASFE", "Internet Explorer" and "Dreamhome" before we get the flawless and majestic tour debut of "Greener". A 25 minute (!) version of "Lacuna" provides the jamming highlight of the night. They abandon the regular build up and dive directly into a noisy improvisation charakterized by harsh opposing riffs by Snah and Kristoffer. "Lacuna" indeed is the most exciting jamming vehicle of the tour apart from "K9" because we see the biggest variation within this piece, both regarding length and form. From here on out epicness and the long format rules the show. "Pacific Sonata" provides a breather only to oddly segue into a long and powerful "Mountain" which directly segues into "Superstooge" whose solo has a piercing and chrystalline guitar tone and it goes on forever. Ultimately, the following "Ship of Fools" whips the crowd into a frenzy. At this point of the show the audience seems to wake up as a small moshpit forms and the vibe is switched to party to the liking of the band. "Taifun" is magnificent and intense, especially the ending. Unfortunately Kristoffer's contributions on tuba are inaudible for most of the song. The encore shows just how "The Tower" songs have grown during the course of this tour. The title track of the new album itself has gained a new authority and openness and is greeted with cheers and more moshing in front of the stage. A sweet "Feel" as second encore engages the crowd in singing, the band is all smiles at this point. Bent says this was a magical night, waves and exits. Thank you Conne Island!
Wow!
Radio Eins is not Berlin's biggest radio (95.000 listeners per hour, the biggest station in the region has at least double that amount of listeners) but Radio Eins is certainly the best
Thanks for the link! And it's only real and authentic German if pronounced with a proper "P" in the band name
Repeated spins of the various recordings confirm that this was a legendary night and that the accolades of attendees are well justified. This is the type of Motorpsycho show I keep hunting. I'd be really surprised if they will be in the special mood a second time to perform another epic night like this, not even Belgium managed to rival Bremen. Leipzig will have to bring out the best in them
Really really like the sequence of this setlist. Epic start (Ship>UpDown), on to real deep and heavy space with supposedly many segues(HMac>Mountain>K9>Pacific — Holy shit!) and aftwards a power punch of short rockers to finish the set, followed by an epic encore. That's really a perfect dramaturgic arc. Second best setlist of the (European) tour after Bremen so far
This review in NOZ (local newspaper) states 600 as attendance. I was surprised to read this and assumed the promoter (the city's cultural department) reported a higher attendance because they could not have this appear to be a flop. Standing in front of the venue when doors opened it seemed a bit odd that we would be seeing Motorpsycho playing to such a small crowd on a Saturday night in their strongest market. 30 minutes after doors there was almost nobody there and it looked like this is going to be a night with 150 fellow psychonauts tops. I did fill up considerably more come show time but like I said, I would be very surprised to learn these were 600 people. Whatever, anyway, it was a great show in an unusual venue, probably as much post-insdustrial as it can get. Papenburg saw a fair share of out-of-the-area visitors so I guess it was worth the investment either way.
That "Manmower" version was already a highlight early on. So strong, so appropriately playing with the echoy ambience of this extraordinary venue, so far out jazzy, I could have gone home satisfied afterwards. But this was only the beginning
Can't wait to hear the recording, just discovered it on Dime as well.
Btw, there is no way there were 600 people. This was a fairly intimate evening. The gallery was empty. Packed in front of the stage (though you could walk up all the way to the fourth row), the crowd loosened 10-12 rows back. I'd say somewhere between 300-400 people maximum. But maybe I am off. Even after all these years in the concert biz it's hard to estimate…
59 since April 1996 (+ 10x Tussler)
Fire alarm? Wtf? I heard no fire alarm. When was this?
Quote:I DO have the numbers and I can confirm thatWould you mind sharing them, maybe in a seperate thread?
