A slightly more personal observation: Listening to This is Your Captain immediately after Balthazaar is like talking to someone really bright with a lot of cool ideas and then meeting their brother who’s probably equally bright but who also happens to smoke a LOT of weed. It works pretty well, actually!
@suntripper: I was very close to namechecking that album as well! I just can’t imagine Bent admitting to have taken any inspiration from that one. 😉
Laird of Heimly sounds like something off Led Zeppelin III with strings arranged for George Harrison by George Martin.
Awesome stuff! They had me at hello with this one.
Whoopsies, someone beat me to it as I had to put my ohone away for a while. Nothing to see here.

In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, Bent got that tattoo on his right forearm. My guess is that’s where it started – except, of course, I have no idea why he got it or who designed it in the first place.
Elysium, Soon: Ok, this one has really grown on me and I’m not skipping it after all. Love the zep-ishness of it. I’m still pretty sure it was intended for The All Is One – it just has that feeling all over it, sonically and melodically. Maybe lyrically, too, I wouldn’t know as I haven’t paid any attention to the lyrics yet. I think it would have probably made the non-N.O.X. portion of that album sound too samey – on the other hand, I’d happily switch it with, say, the title track.
Anyway: I see what you mean, @shakti. Sadly, that 5 songs EP formula went overboard with Geb more than twenty years ago(!). Personally, I’d take a full album of non-album oddballs like Space Cadet Boogie, KR-3, Nature’s Way, Star Dancer vs. Car Cancer and Sterling Says in between the more conventional and/or concepty ones any day! Agree with you on Revenants, totally disagree on Crownee Says. 🙃
Btw, does anyone else hear a vague resemblance with Pink Floyd’s Paintbox on Return to Sanity? Nothing more than the opening chord, really, but that was my first thought.
My first impression was the exact same as @otherdemon’s. After a couple of more spins, I must say I do like most of the songs, some of them even a lot. However, I will probably be skipping Elysium, Soon simply because it sounds too much like a song off The All Is One (which I loved and played to death). I really, really don’t need more of that in a new context! Oh, and This Is Your Captain? Hahaha! Would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall when one certain decision was made.

With their history with drummers in mind, that might very well just be another nod to Spinal Tap. It also follows immediately after the «killing» of Bob LeBad, right? On the other hand, it does come across a bit ambiguous as it’s a way less obvious joke. 🤔 On the, er, third hand: let’s not overthink it. 🙃
Huh. I find All My Life (I Love You) quite underwhelming (after just one listen, admittedly). It could have almost been a B-side from The Other Fool (and if it were, I’d only rank Funk ‘99 lower). But hey, in MP’s case a ‘meh’ single usually means there’s a great album waiting to be released!
Well, I sure hope they can get Into the Sun and 3 Songs for Rut out there as well.
My copy arrived yesterday, am I the only one?
I would love to see Have Fun as well on that setlist, even though 3 Songs for Rut (obviously) has no title track. (Actually, my dream scenario is they do a festival set containing nothing but B-sides: «Oh, sorry, did you say ‘released as singles’? We thought that was ‘released ON singles’ …»)

@trylleball: Same here! That also goes for vol. 2 of the tribute series btw, it’s nice receiving these «surprise gifts» from a less financially challenged past.
Anyway, a nice read indeed! I don’t want to spoil anything, but especially the interviews and the story of the whaleship Essex made me appreciate TDDU even more (it’s a masterpiece I heard).
A little off topic this, yet not quite: back in the 90s Bent used to throw in some words from Funkadelic’s Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow during live jams from time to time, and I think they played the riff a few times, too. Now, did anyone else notice how they snuck that riff in again in the background on their, yep, cover of The Future of Our Nation (on Motorpnakotic Fragments)? I bet little things like that are right up your alley, Jero. 😉
Edit: fat thumb typos
