I’m probably the only one who thinks this way, but: I still don’t understand the need to play covers when you have a repertoire like MP. When I go to their shows I would prefer to listen to any other of their songs rather than a cover. I consider it a waste of time. I know: it sounds like a very narrow-minded thought. And I say that without any polemical intent (but a pinch of irony). I’m just curious how others MP fans live and feel it

        I love it.

        Motorpsycho have always done this.

Think they played Tonight’s the Night on the first ever show they did.

I’m with Paolize here. For years I’ve stated that I want 100% Motorpsycho when I go to their shows. That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy “All is loneliness”, “Into the sun”, “The pilgrim” or whatever, but in all cases I’d prefer more Mp material instead.

Motorpsycho have stated that they regard rockmusic as an artform. Throughout the years within their own works you could trace what kind of music they were interested in, be it 70’s rock, freejazz, modern-classical composers like Bartok and Stravinsky, too many to name. For me as a fan, part of the adventure is them giving me hints of great moments in rock-history to seek out, and this often happens through them playing cover-songs. I like to think of them as a tribute, as well as revealing the many sources that make them what they have become, the supercreative and versatile rocktopuss of today (and always have been). And also, I admire them for always being humble enough to take a hats-off to the greats of the past

I completely see both sides of this argument, but want to say that I would love to see them mix up the covers a bit more. Some of them get a bit predictable. How long have they been doing Rock Bottom or Pilgrim now? Black to Comm used to be the same. Now when they do one-offs, even on the spur of the moment, that’s when it gets REALLY special. I still get goosebumps thinking about how they transitioned seamlessly into Santana’ Jin-go-lo-ba during a transcendent jam in Bergen 23/10/99. I don’t think they did it before or since. That was pure magic.

I discovered so many great songs and even bands just when i heared them play a cover live, or figured out some hint in the meaning of song titles. So no complaints from my side.

I absolutely see your point but man, Inside Looking Out was incredible last night! What a way to finish a concert!

I view the covers as less essential, yet good fun, and part of the shared culture and heritage. But yes, mix it up a bit more!

I don’t see the cover thing as essential to MP, but yet it seems to be great fun – for them and part of the audience as well. I enyoyed Inside Looking Out very much this week.
And then – Motorpsycho kind of take up elements of other bands, predecessors, in many of their own tunes and sounds. And on the other hand give the motorpsychedelic treatment to the songs they cover. Let them have fun!

I prefer a classic over a cover, simply because meanwhile many many gems don’t make it into the setlist anymore. After 30 albums the band would have to play 4hour-sets to appropriately represent their discography and with each new release chances to hear old tunes get lower. That’s the downside of hypercreativity, i guess :-) Buthey…after all, it is their party….they can do whatever they want! Looking forward to Dresden.

A little off topic this, yet not quite: back in the 90s Bent used to throw in some words from Funkadelic’s Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow during live jams from time to time, and I think they played the riff a few times, too. Now, did anyone else notice how they snuck that riff in again in the background on their, yep, cover of The Future of Our Nation (on Motorpnakotic Fragments)? I bet little things like that are right up your alley, Jero. 😉

I don’t mind a cover or two in the setlist. Especially if they do something interesting with it than just “planking” it. The Pilgrim is a good example of a cover developing into sprawling jams.

But they are usually very good at diversifying that stuff.
Example: This year’s Rockefeller gig had 4 covers. While last year’s Oslo gig at Sentrum Scene had 0 . So it fluctuates :-)
