Motorpsycho with a drum machine. That’s a first for me. Lots of droning, Snah mostly (only?) used his guitar for ambience.
I liked it, but didn’t understand much of it, and I look forward to see them play some of their shorter material on the upcoming tour. Hopefully.
Bergens Tidende was there, so I’m excited to see what they’ll say.
Shows: 9 since 2006 (pretty sure I'm missing one or two here)
Locations: Oslo (Øyafestivalen) 2006, Roskilde 2008, Bergen 2009, Nordfjordeid (Malakoff) 2009, Oslo (Øyafesitvalen) 2010, Oslo 2011, Bergen 2012, Bergen 2014, Fjaler 2021
Number of songs: 84
Most played: KDH and Alchemist
Most anticipated song: Drug Thing, Flick of the Wrist and Wearing Yr Smell
Special:
– Øya 2006. My first show, and they played Hey Jane, which was huge for 17 year old me.
– Roskilde 2008. Best MP show I've seen, despite not my kind of setlist. I grabbed Bent's lyric sheet for Inside Looking Out, and it was written on the back of his plane ticket.
– Øya 2010. Timothy's Monster live, fireworks and all. I remember I met a handful of you guys there, but most names escape me.
– Bergen 2014. Monumental Hogwash and a very welcome Hyena.
– Fjaler 2021. Special show in the middle of a forest. The material was a bit too new for my taste, but the whole thing was quite an experience.
I remember the opening lyrics from the first song were "So beautiful..", with Bent on vocals. From where I sat, I couldn't really hear Snah's vocals.
I was there last night. Sadly, I can't help you much regarding the setlist, since I am one of those Timmy/Blissard/Angels fanboys and haven't really listened to anything past Behind the Sun. I think they played most of the NOX suite, but you should take that with a pinch of salt. Some local press was there, so I'll post that later, when they publish their article(hopefully written by someone who understands these conceptual things better than I do). A lot of people with proper cameras took photos too.
The setting was great. In the middle of the forest, a bit cold and very dark. When we got there, they were just droning for a long time, until everyone got settled in. Then they went full Motorpsycho, with jamming, effects, noise etc. and Snah was shredding like a god. A handful of children were dressed up as.. I don't know what they were dressed up as exactly, but it was very Norwegian folklory, and they danced. Very conceptual, sometimes intense and a bit eerie. I didn't know what to expect, but what we got was great and quite the musical experience. Certainly the most special MP show I've been to.
If I remember correctly, it's mentioned in the Blizzard book that it's Snah.
Edit: That said, I too think it's Lars.
Just recieved mine, but I don't have a record player available:(
Just double checking all shows I've been to, I see one mistake on the Roskilde 4.7.2008 setlist. They did not play Halleluwah during Hogwash, but Inside Looking Out. I know this because I fetched what I thought was the setlist after the show, which turned out to be the lyrics for Inside Looking Out written on the back of Bent's plane ticket.
Been a busy summer, so I've kind of forgotten about this haha. I hope people are still up for it. Myself, I'll try to get my recording equipment back(lent it to a friend in Oslo when I live on the West Coast. Great.) set up over the next weeks.
I've started playing around with Trixeene, 29th, ASFE and Year 0. Also looking into Ozzylot.
A great way to get the ball rolling is if people tell which songs they want to do.
EDIT: I know a few people who work with music management and publishing, and will look into how to eventually get this printed and published. Would be really cool if this could be more than just an online release.
I am very open to that idea, though my favorite records are from the 90s. There's always something from Phanerothyme or BH/BC I can cover.
Also, I am very open to ideas about how to make this happen:)
Supernaut: I get that. I don't think anyone here is doing it for the hype, but with MP being a huge influence to many established acts in Norway, I don't think having one of them in on it would kill the fun. That is, if they are doing it out of sheer love for MP, of course.
Anyway, it seems like there is interest from at least eight different people/bands here, so with a couple more we could really do this. And that's a good thing.
I am leaving a band these days and starting a new one over the summer, but none of them are huge psychonauts, so I might just do a bedroom recording by myself. It would be cool if people collaborated on TGC or something, though!
Ecarnar: My original thought is the latter. I think that is the easiest way.
Getting a bigger band in on it is a great idea!
The middle segment(with the flute) of In Every Dream Home is absolutely stunning!
Absolutely massive concert last night. The acoustic songs really set the mood for the rest of the evening. And starting of the electric show with Cloudwalker… Wow.. What a song that is. Definitely the highlight of the evening. Hope they keep that one on setlists for many years. Hogwash is always a favourite when they play it. It was better at Roskilde in 2008, but then again, that's the best Motorpsycho show I've ever been to. Lots and lots of songs from their early years combined with BtS, which is nice. The addition of Hey Jane, Hyena, PPPP etc. made for a really good show.
My impression has always been that the BH/BC-songs aren't really that interesting live. Before last night, I would have said that I've heard No Evil one or two times too many, but last night it sounded better than ever. Hyena, which I hadn't heard live since 2006, was outstanding. The audience really seemed to appreciate that one. 385 NOK well spent.
The song inside Hogwash was in the same vein as Sunshine of Your Love. I don't think it was Halleluwah or Inside Looking Out this time. Then again, I could be wrong.
I love the fact that they added Afterglow to the setlist, but did they have to skip Wearing Yr Smell? I was really looking forward to that one in Bergen.
Several acoustic guitars, an electric on Bent's guitar rack.. Looking forward to seeing the setlist later
