yup, “getting old” is a great one – and i personally think gebs solo album to be quite nice.

btw, if you consider it a “geb song”, you could count in “the nerve tattoo” as he co-wrote that tune, too.

he also recorded parts of the new Manic Street Preachers record and that one is great too. (but the parts of the album recorded by their long-term-collaborateur dave eringa are just as good, so whatever ;) )

I bought my fucking vinyl machine ~5 oder 6 years ago when the old one I got from my parents died down, just for around 200-300 euros or so. (Interestingly, my brother still uses that old player, he somehow ressurrected it I guess ;) )

something is really weird with this forum.. I’ll try again:

We used to have a really well sorted record shop in town, but the person who ran the CD section died 3 years ago and his followers were not quite a replacement, even if they were very nice people. However there is still a considerably large Motorpsycho section there, thanks to my constantig ranting “order more MP, order much more MP, you need more MP” (sadly the quantity of their CDs in that shop hasn’t changed since a couple of years – so no MP listeners in this town I guess).

Hamburg is a pretty great place, yes. I’d consider moving there if the cityscape altogether would attract me more — and if they’d have some hills here, I don’t like flat, I live in the alps ;)

I do have an ipod, btw (a couple years old now, and starts erroring around a bit), but I don’t use itunes; since Rhythmbox (Linux music player) handles mobile music devices just fine.

And my band is Ruhestörung: http://www.ruhestoerung.eu (streaming songs on the myspace-site, free downloads of some albums via lastfm, link is there on the site somewhere). Sadly my brother has expressed he wished no longer to be part of the band, which effectively ended it. When I get my kicks in music again (I hope so), I’ll see if I can either start another band or just record solo.

@supernaut: I get your point, and think you’re right about it. I’m thinking quite similar actually; but my approach is a bit different, however in no way opposed to it (at least this is my perception): I used to browse the shops a lot, I bought a lot of CDs, I got inspired a lot, started my own band and wrote tons of songs. Some of them were pretty good I think (but I’m not to judge I guess).

However, at some point in time, the shops here started deteriorating, minimizing CD sections (LPs are present only *very* occassionaly) and therefore it became a lot harder to get hold of stuff I liked (btw, I got no problems buying stuff with only a couple of ‘good’ tracks on it, I have the half of Bjorks discography and I don’t particularly like her). Usually I’d listen to the records beforehand and buy them based on quite a low “liking”-threshold; for instance, I bought a record by the Icelandic band “Leaves” based on the first track only.

This has now changed, as I usually download stuff as a means of pre-listening and then order the CDs online. And THEN I digitalize it and organize my music this way. My opinion is that it is the right of the costumer to deal with this the way he or she wants – this must not be the artists concern.

I do not like iTunes or similar networks btw; I like music on a physical medium. If I own the CD, then I have the feeling I have the original.

More later, gotta get back to work. But I guess we can see eye on eye on this ;)

Yeah, sure: You go to http://www.gravatar.com , sign up with the e-mail adress used here too, activate your account, log in, upload a picture and it should automatically show up.

I know, it’s not the simplest method of setting an avatar, but it works :)

well, about the bashing.. i got the impression there is quite a number of psychonauts feeling …how do I put this… not really offended, but not really happy either with people preferring cd or digital files.

You yourself implied it would be better or superior to listen to records as intended by bands. I myself was an “album person” for a long time but switched to being more of a “songs person” in the last couple of years. that is also a matter of taste & choice, i believe.

concerning your preachy-teachy-stuff: i know that.. also I’ve repeatedly said I’ve got nothing against releasing stuff on vinyl or people listening to vinyl in general, it just is beyond me what is the harm in releasing a cd simultaneously. also, sure, i accept their decisions, it’s their stuff and they can do with it what they want, but that doesn’t mean i have to like it – being open-minded does not forbid uttering your opinion.

@supernaut: Well, I will try to make myself clearer: I always perceived Motorpsychos fanbase as open (as in open-minded). As Traktorbass said: “psychonauts of all ages and creeds from anywhere on the globe”. And as such, I thought it would be natural that, as (listening) habits vary from person to person, my opinion wouldn’t be bashed so hard; even if it stood against the beliefs of other psychonauts and Motorpsycho themselves.

@GBD: I know one should not read to much into internet discussion. Truth is, I naturally take people seriously, be it in real life or internet; and when I stumble about things bothering me, I react the same way in both worlds; I cannot just cast ’em aside and forget about them.

And regarding Mark: to me, he is blathering about things endlessly; I’ve read some his writings and none really gained my interest. And his articles are really clogging up some parts of the forum so I chose to simply ignore them.

And concerning your sidenote: E.S.T. is quite nice, yes.

My way of digitalizing stuff is a tad easier: Just hooking up the line-out of my stereo with the line-in of my PC and start recording with Audacity or whatever.

…hm thinking about it, using an USB player actually is easier. But whatever ;)

Oh good idea, I thought about that too. I’m not too bothered about that other thread though, because I don’t even see it anymore since hitting that nice ignore button. :)

I gotta admit, a few days I was a bit worried about the reactions I got for my opinions concerning the new release. Hell, I thought, I’ve always seen psychonauts as open people. And that thread was a bummer. But I guess I tend to be a contrathinker in all areas. I sought communication with fans from a couple of my favourite bands – and they are diverse (current top 3: Pet Shop Boys, Calexico, NOFX) – and often was looked upon queerly for not behaving like expected.

Some stuff: I was at a Tocotronic (German indie-rock) concert in Vienna and got quite pissed by moshers. I fell in love with the bands later, mellower material and found that I dispised those who wanted to hear their older, more punky stuff.

I also was at at New Order concert in Torino and got also pissed off by moshers. What the hell, arent NO a pop band? Appearently they aren’t to their fans. I mentioned my displeasure with the fans behaviour in a single sentence whilst reviewing the show in the Neworderonline-forum and immediately got bashed for that. It seems its natural to pogo to that kind of music. Weird.

And then there was this Sisters of Mercy concert. I was there wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt, and all around me where people dressed in black. I never perceived the Sisters as goth, not even they themselves do that, quite the opposite, actually, but there were hordes of dodgey darklings around and I overheard one saying “I wouldn’t even go to a Sisters gig wearing white”. Strange.

I’m pretty sure there was another story but I forgot.

But I gotta say, at Motorpsychos gigs, I felt myself at home. Also at The Wedding Present concert last fall.

ey, did nobody read my postings thoroughly? i OWN a record player (it’s right there sitting above my cd player)! i got no problem with getting the vinyl; i already own several vinyl editions of motorpsycho records, along with the cds. all i’m saying is that it’s not that difficult to put out a cd too.

@akane: I’m quite fine right now as long as the weather is fine too ;) (work is not that great thou ;) ), how about you?

@supernaut: i’m certainly not. but interesting assumption ;)

anyway, fact is that i’m looking forward to hearing the album. let’s dodge the vinyl discussion, that’s a path leading nowhere.
